It's amazing. I've been watching this show pretty much my whole life, over 40 years. Never once realized all these small bloopers. The way you explain it with the "fourth wall" view is so great. I'm a huge fan of your channel, love the way you narrate everything. I've been watching these episodes again with fresh eyes and new perspectives thanks to you!!
Removing the counter is the only way the long loaf scene could have worked. I think they made the right call in doing so. It’s kind of like seeing through the fourth wall. Thanks for showing this, Rick.
The space between the counter and the oven was maybe 3 feet at most. To obtain the camera angle needed it was the only possible choice. Unlike today's cameras which you can put in your wallet, the video camera of 1952 was the size of a small car. And even if they could have the whole scene would have been distorted with an extreme fish-eye lens.
This is one of my favorite episodes. My favorite line is from Lucy when she is kneading that big mound of dough. She turns to Ethel and says in a joyful tone, “ It’s a happy little loaf, isn’t it??!!” 😂 My birthday is 10/15 which is of historic meaning to the show. I am 71, so I watched the very first episode. I did not notice the absence of the counter. I was too engrossed in the scene and the characters. I really enjoy your video research. Thank you. 😁👍🏼
I’ve been watching I Love Lucy since I’ve been a child of the 70’s (I’m now in my mid 50’s and old!! LOL) and I’ve seen this episode millions of times and honestly NEVER even noticed the counter being gone!!! I love your videos, please keep posting!! ❤️
I always noticed that sometimes the counter was there, and sometimes it wasn't. I guess we love the show and the characters so much we give them all the creative licence they need!
"Fourth Wall" and "suspension of dis/belief" are great concepts to consider when thinking about any TV show, but especially one as well-beloved as "I Love Lucy". Thanks for presenting these ideas.
The "darkness" on the floor that you mention at 3:40 is not caused by the missing counter. That is the shadow of the loaf of bread. Notice the shadow is a straight line until you get to the oven door. The oven door is casting a wider shadow. This shadow is caused by a "key light" or "kicker light" that is above and behind the actors facing the camera. It's what makes the top of the loaf of bread stand out and shine so much.
@@martythemartian99 kjclark1963 is right. If you compare the shot at 2:46 with the one at 3:26 you'll see the shadow is longer when more of the bread has come out. You can also search for the clip itself and watch it grow as the bread emerges.
Good eye Rick! I m in my late 6o's and a lover of the old I Love Lucy tv show. So I have seen this episode dozens and dozens of times and have never noticed the missing counter in the oven scene.
I think they filmed it as they should have. I like you have seen that episode so many times, and to be honest, I’ve never noticed the counter missing. You have a great eye for the details!
💕 I never really thought of the counter..but I knew there would've been furniture, a wall or something that would've blocked our view of the huge loaf of bread. So I saw it as if the camera were between whatever should've been there & the oven ! And I was always fine with it. Because it was funny as heck !! One of my all-time favorite episodes !! 👍🏼😍
I enjoyed, and still do enjoy I Love Lucy sooo much! I wouldn’t have minded how they made the show. I never did notice there was no counter, or the hole behind the oven. I just love the show, and imagine it the way it was meant to be. Thank you for sharing! I love your videos about my favorite shows! 👏👏👏
IMP this was done perfectly for Lucy. As others have said we vision the counter behind us. I like how the oven shelf/rack comes out about as long as the 🥖. But that loaf needed support also. Funny episode and thanks for talking about it. I love the little bloopers that really had to happen back then. I would rather have to deal with them than the junk on tv these days!
I noticed the intermittent counter many times. Sometimes it is there when they need to eat or do something....and then disappears when it would block the audience. Never noticed the wall cut out though during the bread scene. I love that episode too. Great job Rick!
Hi Rick....You know yrs ago when I was little. My Grandmother laughed so hard when she seen Lucy bread coming out of the oven. But since you mentioned about the oven you take better notice!
Yes it was done correctly. Because it was accepted until now. I watch these show because there fun not because there perfect cinematically. Love your channel, great job. Thanks
Thanks for pointing a few things out I had not noticed, here is one in return. There is a still used in this video with a dog ( which is from The diet) see that painting in the background? It is also located on the wall in The Lucy Show episode Lucy and George Burns. It is in George Burns apartment and it's quick if you don't look it's gone. Back to this episode I saw a interview where Lucy said she was scared of the saw and I guess id be too.
Excellent video. Very interesting topic. I have seen this episode numerous times and I never thought about this but you are right as far as these bloopers go. Thanks for a great video
Honestly, I would be more concerned with where they got a "timber saw" in their urban environment. I am one that would not consider their a blooper. Above all, the story and sight gags would be more important than the set pieces. Remember, there was no rewind or counter bar in the 1950s...their style of filming would be to create a focus on the actors and situation presented. Continuity is very much a modern thing. Lucy and Desi were truly pioneers the believe that a tv show, and individual episode, might someday be more than a "just in the moment" thing. I suspect lots of early TV people, who came from Film and Vaudeville background were of the mind that the term "show" was just that...an evenings performance. That is speculation, but it would explain why they were keen to let Lucy and Desi keep the rights. By the late-1960s and the 70s, reruns were common... you could see it all again next summer. By the 80s and 90s you could have them on tape. The Franchise as we know it...with fandoms, Trekkies and the like could now maintain their modern beliefs.
Usually in a car scene and you see the actor driving, the rear view mirror is usually NOT there. This is so you can see the actor better in the scene. Yep! To pull off that gag, they HAD to remove the counter. But, it would be more hilarious to think the "bread did it" LOL
I loved the comedic aspects of the show itself, I didn't care about technicalities of the set at all. I watched it because I loved the entertaining part of it and the awesome characters 🥰
I loved the illusion. I never noticed the mistakes. Looks like they did what they had to do to make the scene work. Just like a magician. Sometimes we don't want to know how the trick was done.
That Episode Was 6 Years Before I Was Born. 4 Years Before My Parents Even KNEW Each 0ther. 😂😂😂😂😂 But I've Seen That Episode. Lucy Was HILARI0US EVERY Episode!!!
I have no problem with this at all. I’d rather see the bread come out rather than have the view obstructed but the wall. I never noticed it to be honest and applaud you Rick for spotting this. Very interesting video! Thanks for sharing!
Never noticed the difference until you pointed it out, Rick. Does it bother me? Heck no! It made for a great Lucy scene, and that's all that matters. Keep up the cool work!
Wow, Rick! Another great catch! I actually just watched this episode (yet again) just last week and didn’t notice it! If it were I filming this, I probably would’ve left the counter in place and done a high angle shot, basically over the top of the counter. But maybe the camera equipment being used didn’t allow for this. In any event, great catch! Please keep ‘em coming!
Hi Rick, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this episode and laughed every single time. You really have a keen eye on catching bloopers. As many times as I’ve seen this episode the missing counter never came to my mind. However, I was always interested with what was going on with the “oven rack”. Suddenly it’s three times longer than the interior of the oven never mind the bread! 😳🙄🤦🏻♀️😂🤣😂
"Pioneer Women" is one of my favorite episodes, and I never noticed that the counter was missing when the bread came out of the oven! Thanks for pointing this out! Good eye, Rick!
There is an episode where Lucy and Ethel are looking out of the window which is on the fourth wall of the first apartment, watching new neighbors move in.
I’ve NEVER noticed the absence of the counter and I’ve been watching since late 50’s. I think it’s a sort of comedic “license”. I like that we’re just expected to accept the clearly presented “wrongs” in the name of comedy!!! It’s all about the funny ideas, and not so much about the reality or lack there of. 😂
So interesting! Things you wouldn’t pick out while watching, to me it doesn’t matter how they did it the episode was a success! I love Lucy can’t do wrong 💕 Great video, thanks!
I guess I didn’t really notice that a counter was there when it was need in the one apartment and when it wasn’t when they needed to show the all of the kitchen. Very interesting Rick. This is something that’s really cool that most of us never noticed. Keep up the great work!
Great observation, that is what makes these shows classics. Today, everyone is separating real from imaginary. Even the new Lion King is not made to meet the joy of cartoon version because they are making it look as real as possible and that spoils it.
In 50 years of watching these episodes, it never dawned on me that the counter disappears. The cutout in the back of the oven was always obvious, even without seeing it.
The counter is still there. The Fourth Wall position just changed. We (the viewer) are now seeing the events in the kitchen with the counter behind us. We're on the other side of it. Yeah, they're fudging the spacial relationship between the counter and the oven, to make more space for us to "fit", but it's the only way the gag would have worked with the established set. Honestly, in all my years of watching that episode, I never gave it a second thought. Thanks to your observations, I'm seeing things that never registered before. Keep 'em coming!
I have Never noticed this before! However even as a kid I DID notice and understand that the bread was both PERFECTLY SHAPED and HUGE and would not fit in the oven.
I remember seeing this episode on television and laughing my ass off when that loaf of bread came out of the oven. Yes I realized at the time that long loaf of bread would not have fit in the oven, and I also realized it had no bread pan around it as it came out of the oven obviously either being pushed out by a person or it was spring loaded..... but like you say........ I gave them that "artistic" freedom and enjoyed the show. As a side note here. That episode was indeed filmed before a live studio audience and the bread was really bread, not a prop. It was less expensive to have a real loaf of bread made than it would have been to have a prop made. The Desilu studio commissioned a local bakery to make that real loaf of bread and after the show it was cut up and given to any audience member that wanted a piece of it to either eat there or take home. As for the "forth wall", even as a child I always thought it odd that when the people would go through a doorway to get into the adjoining room. Why didn't they just walk around the wall I wondered? But that's just me.
The only thing I ever thought about this bread scene was that of all the zany things Lucy ever did, this was the only thing that was completely impossible. Every one of her other antics were improbable, but quite possible. Oh, I also thought it was quite hilarious.
Good observation Rick! Now I’ve got one you might like! In the episodes ‘Lucy!s Club Dance’ and ‘Ricky’s Old Girlfriend’, each shows a newspaper; both papers have the same headline - ‘Bond Issue Defeated’! Thought you’d like that one! Always fun to watch your channel!
That's an interesting one because many shows and movies use a similar headline to this to denote a standard/random headline with no real controversy to it. It names no one and is as generalized as possible. Great spotting!
Watching this show is so much fun. As far as the "willing suspension of disbelief" goes, I've always felt there's "reality" and "Lucy reality." So, counter or no counter, who cares. Viewers still get to enjoy the ride! PS: Hallmark Channel, as of August 6, has eliminated "I Love Lucy" from its daily lineup. Very disappointed about this move. Would be interested in knowing how others who support this channel are coping. Could we change Hallmark's mind?
Removing I LOVE LUCY is a huge mistake. Happy to have all episodes on dvd. The original pilot with Papito the clown is absolutely wonderful, much better than the episode with Buffo the clown!!
The counter's presence destroys the illusion of a 4th wall because it highlights the disparity between "no wall" and a "half wall". If you accept the existence of a counter, you could say that (just for the oven scene) our viewpoint is from the other side of the counter. But the marks on the floor where the counter obviously used to be, destroy that impression. too. They were just trying to make a funny show and never imagined that people would be analyzing their work over 60 years later! But it's fun to think about it.
I remember this episode and while watching it the only thing I focused on was the huge amount of bread coming out of the oven. I realized the oven would have had a hole in the back where it was being pushed through. That’s another trick - draw the attention away from the obvious missing counter by creating chaos with the bread. It’s also hard to judge depth in 2-D. It could be the camera is now on the other side of the counter but yeah the markings on the floor indicate it was moved.
I will never be able to unsee that now! It’s not really a blooper, as it was planned. Never noticed it before, I was too busy laughing. Of course, that’s what they counted on, that we would be laughing so hard we wouldn’t notice! LOL Potentially I guess they could have shot over the counter, but remember that the show was filmed in front of a live studio audience, so for the purposes of that, they had no choice but to remove the counter. Thank you, your videos are so much fun and give me so much insight into one of my top favorite shows for my entire life!
It is funny because I had noticed that counter was gone on different shows but never noticed it disappeared in the middle of this episode. For that reason I think they made the correct choice because the counter missing did not distract from the gag. I always wondered how the counter fit with the rest of the 4th wall. There is a design which implies it is free standing but they never went on the near side of the counter. Was is supposed to be connected to a wall that would have hidden the design? The counter top is also not flush with the visible side. I know ... I am over analyzing but I wondered this even when I was young. Just curious what their vision was. Thank you for another fun video.
I totally missed this blooper. yes, they absolutely did it right by removing the counter, you can tell because it is a smooth transition that our brain accepted.
Wow great observation Rick. I'm sure they had to remove the counter in order to focus on the gigantic loaf of bread coming out of the oven. Either way, it's a great plot and very funny and entertaining.
HA! I noticed this one ages ago but I never considered it a blooper. As you stated they really had no choice but to remove that counter if we were to see the bread emerging from the side. Considering when this was filmed they probably couldn't maneuver the huge camera at another angle and show the bread AND the counter. I considered it a necessary liberty that they had to take.
Hey Mr Rick and we are still loving Lucy thankyou for helping out with that now I want to know 2 things from you ,1 how do you have such a good eye for finding these things?? I'm sure I have seen them all multiple times also but missed most of them.next question what are you doing up so late or is it early??😁thanx hon faith love hope to all bye miss dena
I think they did it right and like you, I never gave a thought to the counter missing. In fact 99 of your bloopers I never spotted and didn’t know they existed until you pointed them out. Now I look out for them 🙂
What I think it’s hilarious how the tray on where the bread is on expanded along with the bread 🍞. Lol.
Ha thought the same thing 🤣
Ohhh yeah, you’re right!
My brother used to say the same thing.
Good catch XD. I only noticed that in these stills. I guess it went too fast (and i was distracted laughing) when i watched the episode.
This is the one show that bothered me

Hi,
I always thought it was just the other side of the counter. That the counter was behind me.
Same
That is exactly what it was. Some people don't understand stage set design and manipulation.
I love it the way it is. The fantasy of Lucy was great and nothing could ever take away.
Removing the counter is the only way the long loaf scene could have worked. I think they made the right call in doing so. It’s kind of like seeing through the fourth wall. Thanks for showing this, Rick.

Hi I watch I love Lucy :D Soo yeah 😂
Wow ! I never noticed the counter not being there.......but I always wondered how the bread tray grew as "long " as the loaf of bread did !!!!!!!!
And the bread would not be perfect and grow longer, It would be a swelled up big glob of dough all over the S IDE S Of the OVEN,
@@tomcarpenter700 Yes! Thank you! That always bothered me.

Minor mistake, but true. I noticed it, but who really cares. This dude really knows his stuff about sadly under appreciated art.
The "darkness" on the floor that you mention at 3:40 is not caused by the missing counter. That is the shadow of the loaf of bread. Nah, it doesn't fit the other shadows in the scene but it does follow the line of the counter, so I'm with Rick

It's the magic of television and we just roll with it. I find it humorous and think we're probably expected to just roll with it.
You were spot on with this discovery. I wouldn’t call it a blooper because removing the counter was done on purpose and not accidentally.

Karen82155 thanks for sharing!
Actually, I remember seeing a video around here somewhere that said that that particular newspaper was used in many episodes of many TV shows!
The only way to have filmed it .. love your LUCY insights :)
I just assumed we stepped in front of the counter during that scene to get a clear view. I didn't consider that a blooper.
Never realized this- thanks for sharing
The counter's presence destroys the illusion of a 4th wall because it highlights the disparity between "no wall" and a "half wall". If you accept the existence of a counter, you could say that (just for the oven scene) our viewpoint is from the other side of the counter. But the marks on the floor where the counter obviously used to be, destroy that impression. too.
They were just trying to make a funny show and never imagined that people would be analyzing their work over 60 years later!
But it's fun to think about it.
I remember as a kid thinking how the oven wasn't deep enough for the loaf of bread...LOL
Perfect as is
It is funny because I had noticed that counter was gone on different shows but never noticed it disappeared in the middle of this episode.
There WAS one episode where someone went on the other side of the counter!! Can you remember which one?
Never noticed this before and it's one of my favorites! Thank you for sharing!
You’re most welcome! 😃
I totally missed this blooper. yes, they absolutely did it right by removing the counter, you can tell because it is a smooth transition that our brain accepted.
Lucy is hilarious, period. They (production co.) Ahead of their time. Pioneers in "sitcom"
Wow great observation Rick. I'm sure they had to remove the counter in order to focus on the gigantic loaf of bread coming out of the oven. Either way, it's a great plot and very funny and entertaining.
My mom had an island counter on wheels that could be moved anywhere in the kitchen.
I thought I was the only one who seen it. Thank you
Hey Mr Rick and we are still loving Lucy thankyou for helping out with that now I want to know 2 things from you ,1 how do you have such a good eye for finding these things?? I'm sure I have seen them all multiple times also but missed most of them.next question what are you doing up so late or is it early??😁thanx hon faith love hope to all bye miss dena
thx Rick.....really interesting!
I think they did it right and like you, I never gave a thought to the counter missing. In fact 99 of your bloopers I never spotted and didn’t know they existed until you pointed them out. Now I look out for them 🙂
