It depends on the University and programme. 2.5 isn't the cut off for everyone programme. Many accept less. Don't be discouraged.

Tax classes are slightly more complicated than Mark mentioned. The tax class only determines how much you pay every month. At the end of the year the IRS/Finanzamt will take a look at your complete income (including partner and your younger kids) and will determine the final amounts. This can result in a refund or having to pay some more. The tax classes are set so that usually you get some refunds. It is worth putting some effort into identifying which expenses will be accepted by the Finanzamt to reduce your taxes

Can one look for internship opportunities in other countries in Europe, say Switzerland etc?

I studied and currently work in Germany (biotech). I would advise people to get lots of internships during school holidays. That way you will build networks and when you finish school you can apply to the companies you interned at. I worked as a student assistant and switched to full-time employee after graduating.
