Gino Reda’s Candid Conversation with Shanahan on State of the Leafs

- Gino Reda is joined by Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan to discuss the teams consistency this season and their lack of regulation wins. He also touches on personnel and their depleted blue line and how William Nylander's season will affect contract negotiations.
Ask him how his precious Shanaplan is doing!
The Shanaplan has failed due to league parity. OK then Brendan. 10 years later That gosh darn parity...Vegas did it But hey Brendan and the gang are having a good time up in the box playing Hockey Executive.
“Parity”
The Board of MLSE, the ownership group of the Leafs and Raptors, should have last off-season fired Shanahan AND Kyle Dubas, not just Dubas. Dubas was indeed part of what had given the Leafs limited playoff success during his GM ship of the team, but Shanny, between the two execs, still bears responsibility. Shanny should’ve been fired after the Leafs had lost their 2020 playoff series to the Blue Jackets but here we are. It’s quite possible the Leafs will not see playoff action this season although it’ll be interesting if neither the Sens nor Habs end up seeing playoff action, either, resulting in just the second season, from the 1989-90 NHL one (the 2015-16 one having been the 1st), to feature no Eastern Canadian team seeing playoff action.
Vegas was fixed for success from the get go
@@The_coming_storm The Golden Knights have competent management and ownership teams, something the Leafs haven't had for quite some time.
A basic cementhead running the Leafs. How this guy hasn't been fired is amazing. Only in Toronto
He’s a HOF and has 3 cups. He’s the only winner in the leafs organization
@@pahul79not as a president.
@@TheBillaro dosent matter Vegas last year had multiple cup winning players on their roster and even scratched for locker room presence. Firing the only guy in the whole organization that’s won would be moronic
@@pahul79not disputing that fact. But the blue print from his winning days don’t come close to this current team.
They have tinkered with this same core group for five plus years and it’s been a failure. In my opinion it’s time to move a couple of big pieces while value is still high. The bottom two line are irrelevant on most nights. You have to have a four line team. Your thoughts
@@golf4ubacknine768 the cap will start going up significantly after this year. They should keep their core guys and sign guys around them as the cap goes up
Fire Shanny
Exactly
He has 3 cups, he’s the only winner in the leafs organization
Leafs needs to fire Brendan Shanahan as soon as possible!
Imagine signing Tavares to a 11 mil cap hit and still finding room to complain about league parity and cap space. Three players taking up over 40% of the cap space, and somehow it's the leagues fault.
Yes and no. Sure they were stupid to pay $11M for a second line centre. But blaming others for not doing well enough to raise the cap (Leafs probably didn’t care for the cap in the first place) isn’t exactly off base. Toronto is a great revenue generating market being held back by shitty markets because otherwise generally smart business men got fooled by greasy Gary.
@@baohoailywasting your cap space and then saying you should have more if other teams weren’t dragging the league down is hilarious.
Part of the job is managing your cap and leafs suck at it.
@@canesfan1526 I don’t think any sane person have said the Leafs have managed it well. And they haven’t had an NHL goalie since Belfour. Never have had a true 1A since Borje. It all went downhill when they signed a second line center to $11M when it wasn’t necessary. The side effect being that the 3 younger guys with more upside got the idea that they could ask for a lot and got it. Maybe no one wants to come here. And they were always going to over pay the young guys anyway. Plenty of cowards have said as much. But they were sure to milk any opportunity and shot commercials for the 4 weeks that they played here then cowered off to a team south of the border.
Exactly. The Leafs are 6 years into the Tavares contract and they still haven't done a damn thing about the cap constraint they imposed on themselves by overpaying too many offensive focused (soft) players.
@@baohoaily Carolina hasn’t had a true number 1 outside of Freddie since Cam ward was here. Yet they got to multiple conference finals and 3 division titles.
Plus the idea “nobody wants to come here” is only partially true. Look at how the Canucks were able to bolster the d just fine this off season. Guys like Ian Cole have no problem playing up north.
Calgary has a load of talent they have acquired and signed that don’t have a problem playing in Canada.
A big issue is that the leafs just pay their guys a lot and they know it. They shell out to everyone and inflate everyone’s contracts. Reaves isn’t worth 1M let alone 1.3 but even he got it. Bertuzzi got 5.5 for what? A breakout late in the year with Boston? They spend too much on the wrong guys and when you need depth that bites you. Can’t throw 2M at a good bottom 6 guy because that’s going to someone in the top 3/4.
Good lord Shanny and Dubas sound identical...
I love how much Shanny relies on the cap for an excuse of parity and not the fact that many teams have just drafted better, built more competitive rosters and made the right moves. Stop complaining that you can’t throw money at the problem.
Leafs are elite at drafting, that’s not their problem
It’s too bad the idiots running the Board of MLSE, ownership group of the Leafs and Raptors, have failed to recognize the incompetence Brendan Shanahan has over and over again showed. I am relieved the Leafs have a new GM, but not for the acquisition of John Klingberg or Ryan Reaves. Both skaters in October and November cost the Leafs so many games, putting the team in a rather precarious playoff position. Fault of course goes beyond just Klingberg and Reaves, with the defenceman out for who knows how long and the winger having played under 10 minutes during each of the past three games. Some fans of the Leafs like what Sheldon Keefe has been doing while others don’t like what he’s done and others, such as me, either are unsure or simply are indifferent. I admire Keefe for having against the Bruins limited Reaves’ ice time because the winger has shown when he has played 10 or more minutes more of a tendency to make enough mistakes that goals against have gone up too much in such games. I have at times called for Treliving to waive Reaves, but maybe there won’t be such a need.
Drafting, I admit, is only part of what makes a good hockey team, but it is an important one. The incompetence Ken Holland has, as GM of the Oilers, shown, has, figuratively-speaking, following last preseason, come back to bite the Oilers in the rear even more than in any of the previous four seasons. That’s because in part the Oilers aren’t even in a playoff spot even after 4 straight wins. 6 points behind the 25-point Blues are where the Oilers stand after taking into account games that started on Monday Eastern Time and have now ended. The Blues‘ game against the Golden Knights has not ended although should the Blues win that game, the Oilers will, with the Coyotes‘ having already earned 28 points following last preseason, drop to 8 points out of a playoff spot.
Will the Leafs drop out of a playoff spot later this week? They will have to start another winning streak against the Sens or else I see quite possibly by the end of December the Leafs drop to 10 or more points out of a playoff spot, and thus make this season, playoff-qualifying-wise, more likely than not a write-off.
@@pahul79 they did well when they had top 10 picks sure but, outside of knies what roster player is actually performing well that they drafted? Robertson hasn’t shown much and spent most of his time with the marlies
@@wainber1 yah I am not clued in enough to point blame but, the fact that they can’t pull the trigger to make the right moves really sets them back. Nobody wants to see the core 4 broken up but, you honestly have to admit at some point if you want a competitive roster you must move out some of that salary for defense and goaltending.
Like the idea that they may seriously consider rolling all 4 and just wait for Tavares contract to drop off is insane. You’re getting the peak performance from your top guys now and that’s a waste of a season to try and crunch a lineup because of a bad contract structure.
It’s sad because you can point to clear examples where they could have done something instead. Like reaves, you could have gone for Lemieux who can at least show up to fight and play a full 12-14 minutes if needed.
Why not spend on getting a guy like Ian Cole instead of chasing klingberg?
Theres so many odd choices they made it’s insane.
They really do just throw money at their problems and ask why things don’t work.
Ask Chicago how tough you are to beat???
They all come in ready to bring the Stanley Cup back to Toronto. Almost 60🤔 years and still waiting.
No Canadian team has won in 31 years. Why?

How long have you been trying to make the team better now, Brandon.
He needs to go enough

Shanny was a great player but horrible in his decisions as President hiring Doofus and Keefe. Need to make better decisions team not winning unless major changes are made
Shanaplan needs to go he’s failed and obviously too stupid to realize you need a complete team with a good defence core to win a cup. Instead, he’s staying with four superstars that are not good enough to overcome their lack of what you need.
You know more about winning than a HOF with 3 cups?

This guy after this year should run for politics. He is the best liar that money can buy.
Just like Justin Trudeau
Two guys smiles but both are thinking come on man…
Worry,concern, worry, concern ... 2023 "journalism"
League parody and the cap and what ever else needs to be stricken from leaf management's vocabulary. This team has glaring holes in it''s game that needs to be addressed. The recipe for winning once in the playoffs has been the same forever. Lets go.
guy should have been fired years ago.
Where all experiencing it going through it.
Where all making millions upon millions, the stands are full concessions are flying .
No worries all good in leaf land.
A question you really need to ask yourself.
Why is it that only USA teams succeed with this suposide Canadian sport?
Same old blabla
Shanahan should have been behind the bench not behind a desk upstairs
Like I said this team is not doing nothing💩🗑
So many complaints, I don’t know why any players would play in this city for the leafs. It’s not like they’re in last place ffs
THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING
NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!!!!
Why haven't you instilled that element of Brothers in arms stick up for your teammates go down fighting attitude you exuded your entire career... Are your kids pushover's too? Do your job or leave this organization... Thats of course if your tenure as DoPS hasn't ruined your perception of hockey to the point where you've actively told your players to NEVER EVER retaliate?? To which I say leave this organization and go be a maid or something....

Glad shanny shut that clown down all he wanted to do was be negative. Love shanny defends the leafs and points out the positives the media love negativity no matter what is going right with the team. Guy was rude too cutting shanny off as he gave answers. You even there for answers or just to talk shit?
Leafs are a very very good team
A good team but not an elite team like Vegas,LA,Colorado
Not good enough and worst this year than last.
huh
Fire all management, rip the C off of the coward Tavares he is definitely not a leader,
It should always have been Morgan rielly
Shanahan won’t retire Rick vaives number over him snubbing Shanahan as a kid. Rick said he didn’t know about that and if he did he was sorry about it. Shanahan was a diva I heard many times in the red wings clubhouse. What a clown and this guy never played for the leafs. Just go away man
