The one thing that I would say is that if the teams want to “unofficially” retire #13, they should just go ahead and retire the number. As a Vancouver Canucks fan, I still remember how much Messier coming to the Vancouver Canucks team, how excited people were when the rumours flew around just before the official announcement, and how *instantly* the well was poisoned when Messier said that he would be wearing the #11 without talking with the Maki family first, not talking to the Canucks’ media team about it, and just putting his personal brand ahead of the whole Maki story and the Canucks history. How differently might everything about the Messier era with the Canucks turned out if the #11 wasn’t available-or if Messier had talked with the Maki family & got their blessings to wear his number. Something that could be a very different approach to the idea would be for the Jackets and/or the Flames to give the #13 to a rookie forward each year, just for the one season.
I've been saying the best deal for Swayman has been a 2 year deal takes him right to UFA and the cap will be almost 100Mil if he wants 10-11 at that point and is still putting up his numbers 100% sign that deal.
Problem with that is goalies tend to get very hot and cold. So you're taking a risk not getting the bag if you're able to negotiate it now. And that's not even factoring the amount of freak injuries that rail road careers. He could develop knee or hip problems over those 2 years that makes it so he never sees long term high pay ever again. So if he has the leverage to get it now, he should be angling for it.
@@braddorcas9363 he's nevwr played more than 44 games and had the Vezina winner as his backup his leverage isn't as great as fans think he's still a decent ?mark

I was trying to formulate this nicely, but i think the CJ show is the best podcast about players,...... Nahhh it's 32 thoughts is the best, but AFTER THAT CJ show is the best hockey podcast about current player happenings there is!
I can’t help but think that Draisaitl’s contract does not set Oilers up well for the future. I wonder where that places McDavid and others in concrete talks. Can the Oilers afford both Draisaitl and McDavid. If you had to pick one or the other wouldn’t it be McDavid? This all seems difficult to me!
Yes players like Henrique and Ekholm arvidsson and kane gone assuming after those guys are gone the plan would be getting younger. they would have about 21 mil in cap space to sign McDavid
How I understand the Jarvis deal and deferred money is for buyouts its just like a bonus that part of the deal a player gets regardless. As for how the AAV is lowered sounds like you take the $15.67M out find out what it should be worth in 9 years and then add that lower number back in for the AAV calculation they already do. So the league is saying he's losing $400k a year about. For trades the deferred money is paid out by the team he was on when the payment would have been so if he's traded before year 7 the new team would take that payment but the Canes are still responsible for years 1 and 2. Hope this helps and I'm also not 100% just trying to put the puzzle together from multiple sources that each have a piece of it lol.
For me it just seems that if Edmonton wants to keep McDavid for a long time, they had to do whatever they needed to do to keep Draisaitl. If Draisaitl signed anywhere else it would basically tell McDavid that Edmonton wasn't willing to do whatever to win the cup. So, this signing is massive for Edmonton.
Im confused by the Seth Jarvis contract, how is it really different from the Kovalchuk contract and many others, that were outlawed a decade ago. Back then player signing 12 years contract fully knowing that they would probably retired before the end so that could reduce the aav. How is this different. I like hearing CJ nerding out about this.
Correct me if I'm wrong doesn't the team have to pay the player interest on the deferred amount? I thought there were two options. A Libor amount or a set amount that's just predefined by the CBA? It sure seems like the entire purpose of this is to pay a player more without having to take on more cap hit. But what's confusing is why does this result in a lesser AAV? The contract is still worth the same amount. The player makes interest. The team gets to use the money to invest in the mean time. Okay so the team gets a benefit, the player gets a benefit. So why do they also get a cap break? I know back in the day when Arizona did this for Doan they didn't get salary relief. It doesn't seem to make any sense that this "generates" cap space.
So IMO I'm not a fan of retiring numbers league wide but I think it would be appropriate to retire 13 in Columbus and Calgary Unless the Gaudreaus don't want to have that done. I believe in respecting the families wishes so if they say no to retiring the number than that's that IMO. TBH I think the only reason 99 (Wayne Gretzky) got retired wasnt so much as what Wayne did but also was anyone else really going to where 99? its such an odd number and IMO its hilarious Mcdavid wears 97 which is like Not quite the Great One but getting there.
The owner was out of money due to other businesses. It wasn't that the team couldn't afford Gretzky, he sold Gretzky to bolster his personal finances. LA was a destination because of his Wife's career.
Im curious on what the fine print is on the contract for seth jarvis. What if the club offered to earmark his deffered amount and guarantee like 3-5 % interest. If the club can make 10 percent, and they give him 5 of it, at least the money would be working for him. If the club wont invest the money for him he could move to a more tax beneficial state and save some money that way.
In Vancouver bourdon wore 28 last year was the first time a player wanted to wear it ownership didn’t say no but coke heard how important the number was and he changed it to 82 I think at this point Vancouver may as well take it out of circulation and Calgary take 13 out
5:52 Quick question did Johnny want out of Calgary because of Daryl Sutter or was that Tkachuk? Cause from what I remember he loved being in Calgary but left as a FA because they didnt give him the deal he wanted which IMO is fair to the player. I know it was someone from the flames that said he was resigning with Calgary if Sutter was going to remain HC.
32:55 So for me with Robinson if he is truly unhappy sign a one year deal since this year is VERY MUCH his time to shine. If U're still unhappy come trade deadline or the end of the season then trade/leave.
darryl sittlerr for them was a curse im sorry worse coach for the flames they had. and that was apparently on ownership so hate the flames ownership that fucks things up
Swayman is probably worth around 8.5. But I can understand if he pushed it to 9 million given the leverage he feels he has over Boston without Ullmark. 10 million is too rich. You need to let that go into the season if need be and see if he budges.
It might make sense when Auton Matthews looks to sign his next contract at age 30. TOR give him an 8-year deal with a bunch of signing bonus deferred to when he retires in low-tax Florida.

Calgary and Columbus will retire his number, He’s top 5 in scoring for Calgary all time I’m pretty sure, And Columbus will retire his number as well because it’s the right thing to do.. We shouldn’t be renaming a trophy with lots of history… Maybe Columbus can sponsor a cup named after him that works sorta like the Molson Cup does… Johnny will always be remembered, But fans need to chill saying Johnny’s number 13 needs to be retired league wide, Or change trophies names to his name, Like just calm down, The NBA didn’t even retire Kobe’s Numbers league wide and he was super talented and super important to the NBA as a whole… These things are sooo tragic, But that doesn’t mean the person needs to be given all these exceptions because they have passed… Also fans need to chill about getting mad at Cole Caufield for using number 13… Cole has used that number before AND Johnny was his hero, The NHL also waived the deadline for changing your number which has passed so they basically gave him permission to change his number to 13… it’s a very nice thing that Cole did and now here’s another way that Johnny will live on… His brother Matthew will always be remembered as well, He helped a lot of kids in their hockey journeys and was a great guy just like his brother… RIP to gaudreau brothers 💜

You guys aren't being real if you think McDavid will stay in Edmonton lol. You think he wants to carry a team on his back for the rest of his career? McDavid knows the window to win a cup is this year. He can make more money elsewhere and have a better chance at the cup elsewhere. Oilers are in cap hell now and they'll never be a depth team.
