    I dont understand why some people make that choice to move to Hawaii without educating themselves before making that move. If you dont like it here in Hawaii you are always welcomed to go back to where you came from. Have a nice and safe trip back home.

      Honestly I think it has to do with the mainland's perception of Hawai'i as a fun-filled, vacation paradise, and also just another one of the U.S. states (not an annexed sovereign nation). That "hottest domestic destination" image has been very intentionally maintained, and now Hawai'i is stuck with it -- of course people are gonna flock here with that image in mind.
      My husband got a job here and I had about a month and a half to pack house and read up on Hawai'i; I didn't get into the deeper history until I'd already arrived here. It's all good on the surface; seems like just moving to another state. But unfortunately you gotta read the "thick books" plus live here for at least a year before it becomes clearer. People ask, "Where are you visiting from?" with a nice, warm, aloha smile -- when I reply, "Oh, I live here" the smile usually evaporates with the quickness; you can't really "educate" yourself on that kind of thing, you have to come and experience it

      Hawaii has a really bad ICE addiction problem. On the Big Island, there is a dump where women go throw their babies away because of their addictions. The cops find babies there a lot. They are always watching.. Hawaii has a really bad drug problem that tourists never see..I had homes in the HOVE and also Kailua-Kona. I have lived there off and on for many years

    Did that woman say what I think she did? I mean, I got the whole "The world is sacred" bit, but to come to our aina, and say our culture, our way of life, OUR PEOPLE don't matter? She might as well have ended her speech wih Hail Hydra. And to say that they use respect the culture as an excuse for not making th hard decisions is ridiculous. When buying there land, all they seen was a shot at living in Paradise, not the fact that they'd be buying it on the slope of a very active volcano. I have to be honest, living here, you do get complacent in your everyday life, that you do forget that you live on a volcano, but when shit get real, and that reality strikes, you do what everyone else with knowledge, or being a native, you let the lava go where it's going to go. No panick, and think about yourself, your house, which you bought on a volcano mind you, and all your physical stuff you own, but count your blessings everyday, be kind to others, respect nature, and the culture of us Hawaiians who, wether we're pure or not, wether our race has been dwindled down to such drastic numbers, you came here, RESPECT OUR CULTURE!

      i just like to say the "native" hawaiians came here by boat before the westerners did. NO human originated from this island in purity. And to say the hawaiian culture way is the only way of seeing things then theres problems. Hawaiians are just as much as visitors to these islands as others are, the only difference is time. This is part of the United States right? and the American Dream and all, and people have the right to fight for it? You make your destiny and those who help you along the way. Times change.

    • @ARareAmber
      @ARareAmber 10 років тому +8

      epicxel We may have come by boat to the islands, yes, thousands of years before any other. That is no different than ANY and EVERY other culture on the planet. The land was there therefore humans settled it. Do we have to go that far to prove our point? Finders keepers!! To say that we are not entitled to our Native status is to say that Anglo-Saxons or Chinese are not native of their respective lands. Try telling them the same thing. The human race if we believe in Darwin's theory, began as one race then started migrating out from central of Africa (-now wouldn't that piss that haole lady off?) It is in the cultivation and establishment of the relationship between the ORIGINAL settlers -Native Hawaiians and the mana of the aina that makes it truly our home. OURS! We nurtured for centuries this relationship-in return the gods and the aina rewarded us with paradise. It was an almost symbiotic(for lack of better word) existence until the VISITORS came. WE, the Native Hawaiians, have a deep respect & connection to the aina beneath our feet, the vegetation that provides nourishment, and ocean and rivers for water and plants that heal us. This has been true for many generations. No other people, it seems can relate. And mostly only seek to exploit & destroy.

      thanks, I'm tired of all the comments calling people dumb-asses and else... it's very sad, they are going to drill a hole into Mauna Kea for a 30 Meter Telescope, but there the mountain suddenly is not that sacred after all (lots of money that comes with it). people build channels under the North-sea to connect England and France, build underground atomic bunkers, tunnels, everything. on the mainland they blow up mountain-tops for the natural resources. so much of this earth has been destroyed by greed, but when people's homes are threatened, they don't think diversion can be done. it's not like the people of Hawai'i have not worked with mother nature before to establish and protect their lively-hoods.

    Most "VISITORS", as that last woman clearly is, that have decided to make Hawaii their home have to realize that no matter how much THEY paid for that property you now call home, how long you lived there and how immersed (or not) into the Hawaiian way of life you become, forget that they are indeed VISITORS!...and forever will be in the eyes of the Hawaiian people and our culture. For this woman to state (complain) that too much emphasis on "sensitivity" toward the Hawaiian culture is down right disrespectful and asinine. But a comment so so typical of a "VISITOR". This woman literally disrespected our people by deeming them irrelevant and demeaning us saying we are diluted and there are less than 1/2 million in number. THAT is completely irrelevant, how many of us are left. YOU, Lady, are a visitor and need to respect the aina (land) that you were allowed to choose to live. Believe me, if we and Pele (of this I'm sure) had our way there would be NO dilution of our blood, NO HAOLE living on our land, NO disrespect and destruction of our culture and of our aina.

    These people built the urban environment near Pele( Volcano ) and the residents think that it is okay to move the Lava or reroute it...(stupid foreign thinking) I wish an Ali’i of the Moku showed up and told them all they have to move. It is beyond me how the western homo-sapiens can implore the Occupational state to move the environmental structure called lava-flow. These foreign consumers purchased their house next to a 1 million year old volcano. And they have the balls to ask the Volcano to move…. Shake my Head. These consumers need to have volcano insurance to be compensated but the state has no obligation to mess with the aboriginal volcano.

      MrsClippit you do realize DNA has very little to do with one's culture right? Heritage? Depends on your definition. Culture? Absolutely not. Take for example adoptees....they may share miniscule amounts of DNA with their family but they do grow up in and participate in traditions of their family's culture...it is their culture too.

    • @MrsClippit
      @MrsClippit 6 років тому

      Sorry to burst your heritage bubble, but DNA DOES have a very large part in heritage and culture. Scientists are finding this out. It's part of what they used to call "junk DNA" years ago. It happened to me. I wasn't raised Jewish. I was raised as a Catholic. I was also raised thinking that my Mother's ancestry came from France and that my Fathers ancestry came from Scotland. From the time i was in my 20s I was drawn to Judaism and Spanish cultural ways of life. I found out that my Mother is French and Spanish AND Jewish and so is my Father! I also had a strong love for Ballet. We have famous Ballet dancers on BOTH sides of my family but my parents didn't ever tell me until I wanted to be a Ballet dancer myself. No we didn't have a DNA test,my parents were ASHAMED to tell us that we were also Jewish and Spanish! Sad but true. So how do you explain that? DNA just as the scientists are discovering

    An Icelandic fishing village actually fought and diverted lava flow happened in 1973 village name is Vestmannaeyjar, they used water cannons mounted on ships, the best way to divert lava flow is use of water, now liquid Nitrogen and Helium can be used also if large amounts of water aren't available. Also diversion of pressure in a Volcano can be done but it would be required a heavy bomb to puncture the side of the volcano to divert pressure and lava flow away from a population center. Always wise to let a Volcano release its pressure, if not a major explosion could occur.

    • @flyingturtle4559
      @flyingturtle4559 6 років тому +2

      Marc_ People always cite this example as how you can divert a lava flow, but in actuality if you read the whole story you will find that it really shows how it was possible only in that locale and nowhere else. In fact it was not a total success, but in it's failure it became an unexpected success. Let me explain, this was a fishing town and the reason they attempted the diversion was because the lava flow shifted and threatened the mouth of the harbor which would have ended their livelihood. The lava ended up closing most of the harbor entrance except for about 150ft. and that narrowed entrance, ironically made the harbor safer and more protected from the sea. The main reason they were successful at all, was because the lava was an especially thick a'a' type lava which built up advancing fronts 100 to 300ft. tall and it took 6 months to move less than 3/4 of a mile! On top of that the volcano's lava output diminished so rapidly that by the last month and a half of the eruption it had essentially ceased which means that for over a month it was just the weight of the lava flow sliding into the town. And of course the last reason is because they had an unlimited supply of water close at hand. When all the factors are put together it shows the impossibility of attempting to divert the lava.

  • @Gyva02

    It's pretty simple, diversion does seem plausible but if someone makes a mistake and it takes out a house now there's liability and they are going to avoid liability like the plague. Also if this diversion worked, but another flow at a later date used this diversion to take out some houses there poses the risk of someone being liable again... I can understand why they don't want to divert it, it might come back and bite them in the ass... did you guys know you were building or buying houses on a volcano??? lol...

    Pele is 'pro' diversion. She no care where she goes, she does care about the people on her land, she loves them, means them no harm.
    Pele would love and wants nothing more than the people to guide her path, she knows she cannot be stopped, and she knows the people know this. Pele wants life.
    Those touting opposition to diversion attempts in the name of culture are not one with Pele, they are deceived by those who seek/sought to control them, keep them in spiritual and corporeal bondage.
    The task is great, but the mind is small that doe not attempt.
    You don't try once and give up if the result is unfavorable, you keep trying. Pele wants life on this island, not death/suffering, she wants the people to try to divert her lava, just as they try to put out her fires.
    Pele is not a wicked goddess destroying everything in her path, she is the bringer/giver of life, she wants use to succeed, prosper, not be controlled by her.

It's clear they are ignorant to the fact Polynesia is alive and well. You give up your village chiefs and adopt foreign leadership. You give up the notion of the land that belonged no one and everyone to have to buy it back from the U.S. government. They tell you to give up your language and beliefs. They don't love Hawaii.

    She sure went wrong when she tried to justify her views by saying the native Hawai'ian population was so tiny 😖 I am genuinely curious about how to be sensitive and to respect the culture, and I'm sure y'all are going to teach me your viewpoints, please be gentle in response to my question: it seems like "respect the culture" = "respect the religion"? Is it possible to be Hawai'i native and also atheist (that is, they don't believe in the existence of goddess Pele)? For example, I have friends who are ethnically/racially Jewish, but they do not believe in any gods; they disagree with the dangerous practice of some Orthodox keeping a hotplate on all day on Sabbath bc God doesn't want them to use fire on the stove that day. Does Hawai'i have similar issues, or is religion and culture completely fused together?? I'd sincerely like to hear different views and experiences

  • @xonage2
    @xonage2 6 років тому

    Let's get a few things straight about all this diversion/offending pele and Hawaiian culture.
    First of all, Puna is a very spread out community with a lot of hippies and poor drug addicts. That's why the "official" view is to do nothing. You can bet your ass if the lava was headed for Hilo or Kona they would blast, dig, and divert the lava anyway they could without any consideration for cultural religious beliefs. It's ALL about the money!
    2nd. Ancient Hawaiians altered every aspect of the land to make life better. They built huge fish ponds. They diverted rivers natural path to feed taro fields. The even moved rocks with a human chain across the islands to build roads for slaves to carry the lazy kings and queens around. Every modern road or development project is diverting peles rocks unnaturally. Trying to have it both ways delevitamizes this illogical argument.
    3rd. Present day locals believe in Pele because it's a defiance and rebellion against European culture. It's a form of reverse racism to believe that Pele is cleaning up and getting rid of the Haoles. If Hawaii was not invaded, but somehow culturally and scientifically evolved on it's own, modern day Hawaiians probably would not care much about outdated superstitions gods.
    Lastly. Diverting the lava to save the few remaining beaches, parks, warm ponds, and natural areas people use is a much better argument than diversion to save homes. Homes can be rebuilt. Pohoiki beach and surf areas cannot. If Puna loses the last remaining beach parks, what will the people and especially the kids have left as a healthy outlet? Drug addiction will escalate and the already poor depressed neighborhoods will get worse.
