Dunno whether it works for Chojubai but I find infusions made of antiseptic herbs (like salvia) to be pretty effective when it comes to prophylaxis on young roots or even seedlings *edit: the infusion needs to be made with boiling water and then brought to room temperature before use, of course
Rubber might break apart after a while (6 months, maybe longer?) but maybe the roots will already be grown enough then to support themselves, do keep that in mind :)
You will never died, because this tree will live forever, and as beautiful as your work of art !

The mud stuff that they use is Muck-Keto. Its from the bottom of old rice fields, I think. Rotten peat-moss and acadama.

there is a much easier way of doing the roots, use a rubber band around the bottom of the rock to help to keep the roots in place.
