Thanks! I had a record when I was a child and on the one side was the Snow Goose and on the other the Count of Monte Christo. My favorite stories that still live in me 40 years later!
Never heard Olivia's narrative, even without pictures the imagery comes alive.

I read this short story when I was 12 as a set book in my English Course, I still find it touching. It was brought to us by a English teacher who was trying to show us how love could be created from a coincidence.
Rhyadda, is an outcast from the local commmunity although a very skilled man, seen as a freak because of his hunchback. Ironically Fritha is also an abandoned person being a orphan and also knows lonliness and rejection- to that end there is a link between the two.
It is conveyed that subconsiously both Rhyadda and Fritha actually fall in love. The reality is concluded by the fact with the outbreak of Second World War. Then ironically when Phillip is killed in the rescue operation at Dunkirk, and fails to return to the lighthouse.
It dawns on Frith that she was in love; and takes off where Rhyadda left off. She then takes over the lighthouse and the "duties" which Rhyadda left off and in turn becomes a hermit and recluse.
The whole thing does not come in to focus until you are much older but as charachter assessment truly brilliant for younger readers.
A beautiful story beautifully read
I first read this story when it was in the Condensed Books section of the Reader's Digest. Years later I bought the book proper. It's been with me ever since. A true classic.

This story was one of a very few cultural anchor points i had to cling to as a suicidal young teenaged pedo. If people cherished this story of platonic romance between a repugnant adult male and a young (13 y.o.) Fritha, maybe i wasn't such a monster in my soul as everybody said.
We read it in a high school English course, and for that i cannot thank our teacher enough.
Only Gallico, were you just lazy and killed-off the male protagonist to avoid the awkwardness the real ones of us have to deal with if we don't kill ourselves when the grown-up Frith doesn't come back to us?
Nah, I don't think so. Gallico was making another point, several of them. Love requires us to let go of the beloved when they seek release. The youger Frith could not accept Fritha's migration, but learned to let go as she matured. The older Frith did not want her friend to go to Dunkirk for fear he may never return. Fritha does not understand his need to leave until the goose returns in final farewell.

Он выхаживает птицу, которая затем в течение многих лет, улетая весной на север вместе с другими гусями, осенью вновь возвращается на маяк. В это время Фрита также приходит к Рейэдеру, чтобы побыть с ним и с «Потерянной принцессой», как Рейэдер называет гусыню. Когда гусыня улетает, Рейэдер и Фрита месяцами не видятся, и художник страдает от одиночества.

Гусыня следует за ним. Как впоследствии становится известно из рассказов военных, странный человек в лодке, над которой непрестанно кружила белая гусыня, спас сотни солдат, однако сам был убит пулемётной очередью.
Гусыня последний раз прилетает на маяк, где в небе её видит Фрита и принимает за душу Рейэдера, и затем птица улетает навсегда. Фрита иногда возвращается на маяк покормить птиц, однако вскоре немецкий лётчик по ошибке сбрасывает на маяк бомбу, и на его месте остаются только развалины, затопленные морем после разрушения дамбы. Фрита успевает сохранить одну из картин Рейэдера, на которой он по памяти изобразил первую встречу с ней, когда она пришла к нему с раненой гусыней в руках.
Olivier's voice is too saturated in drawing room refinements and too glib for the Rhyadda character. Rhyadda is not a social animal. He lives as a hermit, his knowledge is of the natural world, and his talents are in his hands. There is an excellent film adaptation of this story up on UA-cam with Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter as the leads.
