Did the Isrealis really think that the indiscriminate dropping of 2 000 pound bombs in civilian areas would not result in casualties to the hostages? Did they not think that dropping 65 000 tons of bombs in the first 90 days of the 'war' would result in the deaths of thousands of innocents, including some of their own? I find it very hard to believe that they thought that by some miracle the hostages would escape their outrageously disproportionate onslaught unscathed. Netanyahu and his war cabinet need to take responsibility for this.

They won't and neither will their supporters. They don't care how many of their own people are killed, in fact those people are considered a "sacrificial offering". Same with Hamas. Hamas said that innumerable Palestinians would die, and that this is what it takes to gain freedom for Palestine. Could Israel be trusted not to take the hostages then renege and continue hostilities? There needs to be an effective way to enforce the peace. If such a way exists, then why not use it now? Palestine has said it would release all hostages for a two state solution (pre -1967).
