I heard this poem over 7 years ago when I was 18. the older I get, the more I see when I hear this poem. At first, it was a girl, then a few years later it was my friends, and now I see myself when I hear it. Grow up with me means so many things across our lives, but it always stems from the same innocent part of the soul, that never changes.
“Grow up with me, let’s run in fields and through the dark together, fall off swings and burn special things, and both play outside in bad weather. Let’s eat badly, let’s watch adults drink wine and laugh at their idiocy, let’s sit in the back of the car making eye contact with strangers driving past, making them uncomfortable. Not caring, not swearing, don't fuck. Let’s both reclaim our superpowers, the ones we all have and lose with our milk teeth, the ability not to fear social awkwardness, to panic when locked in the cellar. Still sure there’s something down there, and while picking from pillows each feather. Let’s both stay away from the edge of the bed, forcing us closer together. Let’s sit in public, with ice-cream all over both our faces, sticking our tongues out at passers-by. Let’s cry, let’s swim, let’s everything. Let’s not find it funny, lest someone falls over. Classical music is boring, poetry baffles us both. There's nothing that’s said is what’s meant, plays are long, tiresome, sullen and filled with hours that could be spent rolling down hills and grazing our knees on cement. Let’s hear stories and both lose our innocence, learn about parents and forgiveness, death and morality, kindness and heart, thus losing both of our innocent hearts, but at least we wont do it apart. Grow up with me.” - Keaton Henson
Brings back memories of good friends. No matter how old we got, we still rolled down hills and did stupid stuff. But as we grow older, these people seem to become rarer and rarer. It's not that we lose our innocence, it's society that forces us to abandon our game of choice and play their game instead. We have simply forgotten we were innocent. We still can be if we learn to resist.
"Poets do the world a favour by turning themselves inside out". That's a quote from my favourite TV show and I think Keaton demonstrates it's truth in both his poetry and his lyrics. He turns himself inside out. He shows the good and the bad sides of his personality. The love that he can feel for someone, and then his own feelings of vulnerability. His candor is inspirational.
this is the first time I've ever heard Keaton speak and, of course, he's blown me away yet again. his talking voice is so soothing and beautiful. such a beautiful human being with so much passion and power behind his words. i hope someday i can tell him how much his and his music means to me. x
A quote from my favourite show... "I think the poets do the world a favour by turning themselves inside out", I truly believe this is what Keaton does. He turns himself inside out and it is beautiful to hear him as he both talks and sings with a dulcet tone.
The more I listen to this the more I appreciate how perfectly Keaton has captured the experiences of childhood. "Let’s cry, let’s swim, let’s everything", the world is massive and unknown and you just want to do everything, experience everything. Simply beautiful.
I found this song so many years ago and still it's touching me so deep that everytime i Listen i have to cry. Thank Keaton henson for Sharing these deep emotions!
I discovered Keaton just a little over a month ago. I'm Infatuated with him in the same way that I was when I discovered Nick Drake. Few people create music and perform with such emotion and depth.
I just finished listening to one of his songs which were great but the words he puts out are very inspiring. Teaching me to let go and be outgoing not to regret anything not to feel insecure or feel unconftorable it makes me feel free. It gives me a different perspective in the world
I don't know what it is about this poem I swear I cry when I hear it and I feel like literally everything will be ok and we need mkre people like this ...
@@josephchoucair3417 this was said many years ago, and ive only known of Keaton and his work for a couple years now. i feel compelled to defend @matthew's comment, especially after all KH has made in the past seven years, if just to expand the definition of poet to include artist and musician, as well, then yes, yes he his of the best of the 21st century so far, and i believe will prove beyond "so far", and rather for the entirety of this century. the best.
This is absolutely breathtaking, this could either be about friendship or indeed 'relationship' love. That's what makes it so incredibly beautiful, it's a poem for yourself, it's a poem which you can interpret. Amazing .
i think he's being ironic, as the poem is about childhood and being a child, he (like most children) probably thought classical music was boring, but he probably doesn't now:) it's about the bittersweetness of looking back on how you viewed things as a child:)
he is a man who lives in woods, grows his beard and paints walls! i do not know him, i have not met him, i never spoke to him. yet his music talks, cries, makes us friends, lovers!
dreadedwheat26: what's your beef with Keaton, hun? I think his material & aura are beautiful; do you know him personally? Each to their own & everything, but you sound pretty cynically bitter and I cannot fathom why.

that's the most I've heard him talk anywhere.
That's what I'm saying
"Let's both stay away from the edge of the bed, forcing us closer together." Lord..
Let's cry, let's swim, let's everything.

i could listen to him forever and not get bored, even if he was just reading out shopping lists

I-I think I broke my replay button
This makes we yearn for a love that doesn't even exist.... Beautiful writing as usual.
Best poem I’ve heard, so real and I get a smile when I imagine all that is said.
Beautiful. It hit me so hard how beautiful life is when it's spent with someone.
Oh Keaton you've created something so beautiful
A quote from my favourite show... "I think the poets do the world a favour by turning themselves inside out", I truly believe this is what Keaton does. He turns himself inside out and it is beautiful to hear him as he both talks and sings with a dulcet tone.
I’ve been watching this periodically for 4 years now. It might just be my favorite poem ever.

he is the essence of why the human race is beautiful having all these feelings and being able to tell them but not wanting to
This makes me shiver, smile & cry every time I hear it. Amazing
Beautiful ❤️
He is such a beautiful human being.
