For those interested, “Open Up and Bleed” is an excellent bio.
He was “saved” by Bowie…but also by his father’s Michigan teacher’s union health insurance which enabled him to get high quality in-patient rehab with a very helpful psychiatrist.
Interestingly, for all of their wild debauchery the Stooges all had supportive parents who backstopped them in one way or another at various times.

Thanks for sharing that detail, very interesting to hear the bare bones of it all. We don’t usually hear what Ma and Pa do to help clean up their rock star childrens lives. That health insurance thing was magic to hear. It’s clear not all meditation, a wing and a prayer before and after the cold turkey.

One of the things I always liked about Iggy is he would go on a show and give 100%, an intense, physical performance, then he would sit down and just talk regular. He wasn't one of these a-holes that had to stay in some dumb character and make for an impossible interview. He would sit down and talk like a friend or brother and just discuss his music and his life--whether he was on Tom Snyder, or for goodness sakes, Dinah Shore, or wherever. Just a regular guy that would talk normal and not BS. I appreciated that.

I have the feeling that David Bowie and Iggy Pop inspired each other a lot, when they became friends. Iggy Pop´s two first solo albums ("Lust for Life" and "The Idiot") were the best albums that Iggy Pop released in my opinion and David Bowies Berlin Trilogy ("Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger") were also David Bowies most experimental albums that he released during his lifetime. Iggy Pop and David Bowie had a lot in common and both Iggy Pop and David Bowie felt like outsiders from the society that they lived in.

Met and briefly chatted alone w Iggy after seeing him perform at Hollywood, CA Stardust Ballroom 1979. Afterward small group went to The Troubadour niteclub, where we both smoked cigarettes outside. I, 17, braved to ask, "How's David?" Iggy threw his cig butt on ground, saying in a quietly gruff way, "He's fine...".
Knowing they'd escaped to Berlin the last cpl years, I just wanted to acknowledge their closest friendship.

On the subject of Bowie’s need for “other outlets” :
Iggy worded that very politely and cautiously! It is ABSOLUTELY true that Bowie went to other places that he didn’t (and probably couldn’t) have done with his own albums. I suspect Bowie’s elaborate artistry in his own albums was born partly out of the fact that he wasn’t really a natural extrovert like Iggy or Mick Jagger. Furthermore as a fan of rock n roll he would’ve probably enjoyed the fact that Iggy was ‘real’ American crazy rocker. Bowie did state once, quite rightly, that “rock n roll wasn’t English” and was something English people were dabbling in in an arty sense which he intended to take to the next level.
On other occasions Bowie talked about hating his own voice (as if anyone else does). And you can sometimes actually see a self-loathing process written on his face in certain live performances. So I bet working with Iggy had a great energy for him without having to deal with the heavy process of his own songs.
And and and, there’s also a cool interview with Bowie and Trent Reznor (NIN) where he describes Trent as more of a ‘minimalist’ which again I think is because he can see someone like Trent able to be raw and basic with personal music and lyrics, while Bowie is more like a high brow artistic collage of all sorts lyrically and musically. No doubt Bowie made lots of personal stuff but I mean with an entirely different approach.
    All hail Bowie.

    • @ThinWhiteAxe

Bowie was an artist before he was a musician. He started as a painter who decided performing was a more effective outlet for his creative vision than visual art (although he continued to paint all his life). He basically used himself as the canvas in his performances, and his voice as the paint. All that means he wasn't exactly the bona fide, classic rock star whose costume and medium he donned.

Some people are just biological super specimen. Like Ozzy... They did tests and discovered that his liver can break down alcohol and drugs reeeeeeeeeeally well (I can't remember exactly, but that's basically what I remember they said). I'm sure Iggy's organs are nothing to scoff at as well.

"Nihilistic rock". Wow... To me Bowie was one of the few Rock intellectuals of his generation. When most of the greatest rock artists were just delivering their music not thinking too much about it, Bowie was vastly cultured and educated and very self aware of his work and the rock environment. He understood about styles and concepts in a way very few did. I'm pretty sure he would have get pretty high in an IQ test.

guitar lover absolutely not, the doors had far less influence on subsequent artists than both Bowie and Iggy. The Door's music was rooted in the 60s.

    • @ryanv3015
      @ryanv3015 7 років тому +6

Kevin Vuile Rotte Lafaard I don't agree with guitar lovers comment but Carlos hit the nail on the head. Iggy was immensely influential but he lacked the craft and vision that Bowie had. Where would Iggy be now without Bowie. With his help Iggy wrote the post punk album 'the idiot' when people were only just recognising punk, but he couldn't have done that without Bowie an isolated individual who was praising the music of Kraftwerk.

Look it's all subjective...they're all good and belong in the pantheon in cosmos.....people who hold real artists up like trump cards are fools and don't get it.
The doors in the sixties were before their time 99% of bands were all hippy and free love as opposed to no one here gets out alive......the doors was one of the starting points of metal music that would come.....
DMT and listen to American prayer.....wow he knew
