I am a music lover from the time I was 7 years old. Never had the patience to play, but always dreamed of it. At college, a pianist friend of mine told me he could teach me to play the first movement of the Moonlight. And I learned it by rote over the course of about six months, having no technical skills or knowledge about music. I could give it my all, and I played it more, I would think, than anyone ever has! One night, I was in the mezannine of the Palmer House in Chicago. I saw a Steinway sitting there, and could not resist. In the middle of the piece, a woman stood by the piano and listened to me intently play the only thing I ever could, but play it damned well I did. " That was so beautiful," she said, "What else can you play?" "Well, I have to be leaving now." And so I did! Over the next 40 years, I lost the ability to play it. It is so frustrating, remembering how I labored so to do it. However, now, with your tutorial, I know I could get it back in a few weeks. Maybe I shall. Thanks!
You are such a gem and unique in the way you teach. I applaud you and thank you ever so much for your style in teaching. Anyone can learn if you were the teacher. I am so grateful I found you. God bless you.
Thank you for commenting / viewing Elizabeth! I really appreciate your kind words and the way you've acknowledged my teaching style! I wish you the best in your piano endeavours and God bless you! :)
I can't believe how easy it is to learn from you! You explain as you play, you don't go seriously fast, and tell me what notes to hit. I am so greatful that you are a good teacher! Please post more videos!!! Can you play Bohemian Rhapsody? Or the blues too? I have always thought those would be fun to play.
+honorthelegend1 buy the sheet music and learn it ways faster :P this piece isn't about playing the correct notes, it's about playing them so correct, with so much feelings and patience. the 3rd movement is way more powerful :D but the most people only know this one!
B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T learnt all of this in 2 hours, thank so much, I thought it was going to be much complicated than this because all the other videos on youtube are really hard to follow but yours was really clear, Thanks!
I've never played a musical instrument. My wife plays piano and I have always wanted to play, but I don't know what any keys are called or how to read sheet music. HOWEVER, I have watched your video and was able to play the first half of this song and continue to work on the 2nd half of this video. Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. For the negative people commenting, please know that your work is appreciated.
Thank you for commenting / viewing Raymond! I appreciate your kind words and how you've acknowledge and appreciate my teaching style! I wish you the best in your piano endeavours :)
This is extremely helpful for an intermediate player like I am. I learned this beautiful piece 20 years ago, quit the piano, now have come back to playing. Thank you so much for your help!!
I really like this tutorial! I bought myself a piano formy 40th bithday a cople of months ago. Had a rough time last year, brainsurgery that resulted in nervedamage thar forced me to stop trying to learn how to pley the guitar. Got the piano about a month ago, never played before, cant read notes etc. I have loved this pices for as long as I can remember and it always makes think of my father. So, in memory of my father who passed last years afror years of fighting for his life, I decided to learn this pice. Have a long way to go, but I am learning, thanks to you!
I love this piece so much and you take such patience that I want to learn this piece from your version only. I wish I had your lesson on a piece of sheet music. I am a very new beginner to the piano!
Thank you for viewing / commenting Tam! I really appreciate your kind words. I will try to implement the sheet music for future videos :) I wish you the best in your piano endeavours!
I don't usually leave comments but I need to express how much I love this tutorial. You were precise and explained everything slowly to aid comprehension in addition to repeating any important notes. Thanks for making such a an excellent tutorial which are hard to find on UA-cam :-)
Thank you, really. I've wanted to play this song for so long and this is just what i need. A great tutorial. You've helped me with one of my life goals. Have a mental high five from me
love that you break it down very easily, just one thing as a suggestion to make it easier to follow, after u teach the notes for a hand I would like to see you play it fully through that hand I had a hard time following the second part for my right hand during the ending didn't know quite how it was to sound
Thank you so much for uploading this. I don't know any notes or how to name the keys but I completely learned it. It was put very simple and nicely. Thanks a lotttt ❤️
I'm just going into grade 7 and I have discovered such a beautiful song not long ago, so I wanted to learn it on the piano. I knew it would be very difficult since I have never really played a piano. I got a freestyle piano app and practiced from that point. I know most of it, however the ending might be a little harder for me to try. Thank you for helping me learn even a little part of moonlight sonata, and in such short time! Ur 😎 😊
thank u so much i literally know nothing about piano and i been watching ur video over and over and literally my parents are stunned how well i’m learning so fast
This is just what I've been looking for I play by ear and have a hardtime reading music . I would love to learn the rest but it's understandable if you don't want to it is a 15 minute piece and if I'm not mistaken we are only about a min in
Would love to get the rest of Moonlight and maybe a video of somewhere over the rainbow. Love how you step through things slowly. Just bought a keyboard and trying to teach myself. And play for my 89 yeast old mom who’s not doing so great.
thanks! always been wanting to play this... only when ur playing the left and right hand together, u should move the camera so we can see exactly wen u play them instead of having to listen and guess where the right hand is at... but thanks
Thank you for the fine tutorial, though I do think there is a mistake in the 8th measure. The 4th triplet begins, I believe, with A (lower note) and B (higher note) combination.
Thanks for the tutorial but one thing. Every now and then you say "do it two times" but then do it three times, and then when you say "it should sound like" you do it two times. It confuses me a lot so be careful when it comes to repetition
Thank you for viewing / commenting Kitten! I reall appreciate your kind words and keep up the good work! I wish you the best in your piano endeavours! :)
This is such a great video! Learning it currently, finished part 1 and RH of part 2 in 1 week! Only thing is that LH part 2 was a little confusing and I had to ask my friend for help on understanding it.
Thank you for commenting / viewing Spinny! I appreciate your kind words. I will take your comment into consideration when making future tutorial videos. I wish you the best in your piano endeavours :)
I finally got it down. I pretty much mastered Fur Elise, now this song. I will surely be posting a video of me playing this as soon as possible. Good work man. 👍👍👍👏👏👏
I agree with many who have thanked you and don't mean to take away from that but I have to ask... Why do you say 'UP' when moving to lower pitches on the left side of the keyboard and 'DOWN' when moving to higher notes? I've never heard any other musician or music teacher do this and worry about confusing beginners. If it's dyslexia related or something like that, I understand but if it's some technical perspective I'm unaware of, I'd love to learn the meaning of this. Aside from that, thank you for helping me make progress on this beautiful piece!
thank you you are so wonderful and you got so much passion for music and you got such incredible and great way as well in teaching, I wish we have more people like you in our world who love people music and got passion for life , God bless you :)
You were really clear and broke things down very well! Don't know jack shit about piano, sheet music, or anything but I was able to get this down. Thank you :)

Hello, I just started playing the piano (specifically keyboard, 54 keys) yesterday. Thanks for this video, this is the first one I'm trying to learn since this is moderately easy and 54 keys (I think) doesn't suffice for this beautiful piece. :)
Glad you enjoyed and yes it is 54 keys :)

Hello Mate,
first of all thanks for this video. I always wanted to be able to play the moonlight sonata since it´s my favourite piano tune, but never been able to play it because i can not read the notes. Thanks to you, I am finally able to realize this wish.
The second thing is that at 4:05 you´re saying to play E and than Gsharp and then Csharp. But then you go on to play and also add an E (?). And you´re saying to play it twice but then you go on to play it 3 times.
This is a lil bit confusing can you please tell me specifically which notes to play how many times.
best regards from germany
I would like for you to put the rest of the song on UA-cam because I like your teaching methods
