Love the card design on this but I think they missed a great opportunity to have this card start as Gandalf the Grey and have it transform into The White
With so many pop culture references in mtg now (Godzilla, Stranger Things, Dungeons and Dragons, and now Lord of the Rings), I wonder if it's possible to make a functional deck using only cards that are references to pop culture.
Gandalf is a Priomordial Maiar spirit. His physical manifestation of "Gandalf" is an Avatar... so yes! Avatar Wizard! Sauron and Sarumon both have "Avatar" in their creature type. awesome attention to detail
its another doubler like Elesh Panharmommycon that's also in white, but also gives legendary spells and artifacts flash. on another note, gives another meaning if you say "Gandalf's flashing eggs, swords, staves/wands"
@@JLKaizen depends on if you can equip them immediately either via hammer of nazahn, sigarda's aid, brass squire, leonin shikari, auriok windwalker, instants that equip creatures immediately like magnetic theft. For some reason I expected this to be a Jeskai card rather than mono-white. Yeah, he has white in his title, but I expected him to still keep the red and blue that he had in his other card!
I just got into commander a couple years ago and when I went to build my first non precon desk, I chose Kykar, because I was sure when Gandalf gets printed he’s gonna be Jeskai. I’m so sad.
Interesting thing about the wording of Mirrorworks: it isn't an activated ability, *it's a triggered one*. Which means you can also double *it*, paying 2 twice to get *two* extra copies. Which both *themselves* get double effects. Meaning you get the ability six total times!
Ooh I kind of want to put this in my Rocco deck I recently made. I focused on artifact synergies. So many other great decks for this. Would be fun in Jodah or Yoshimaru.
@Commander's Quarters Solemn Simulacrum, Myr Retriever, Ao, Wurmcoil, Skullclamp and Ichor Wellspring going into the graveyard all don't get doubled by Gandalf. For Gandalf to double the triggered ability, it needs to literally have the words "leave(s) the battlefield". Not "dies" or "is put into the graveyard". While a creature dying will also result in it leaving the battlefield, those are distinct events and trigger different things and are affected by different things
There's been a mistake in this video regarding his abilities, but it's actually not that! His text specifically read "if ... leaving the battlefield *causes a triggered ability ... to trigger* ". It cares about that *event* causing something to happen, not the specific wording on the permanents which get triggered. And since when a permanent is put into the graveyard, it leaves the battlefield, those abilities do get triggered another time. What Mitch got mixed up on is the fact that Gandalf does not care about legendary permanents' triggered abilities. For example, Anafenza's triggers only get doubled when a legendary creature enters the battlefield, not for any other creature, since the event of a legendary creature (i.e., permanent) ETBing is what Gandalf cares about. This also your friendly reminder that rule 603.2e exists, and that delayed triggered abilities (e.g., that induced by Adarkar Valkyrie) do not get doubled :(
Ratadrabik triggers off creatures dying, not leaving the battlefield. Those are distinct effects. Gandalf wouldn't double that. And the new copies that Ratadrabik makes aren't legendary, so their triggers wouldn't get doubled either. Though it's still probably a really good card in the deck just for the original trigger getting doubled
@@joedoe7572 apparently MTG clarifies a leave the battlefield trigger as anything that would cause it to cease to exist. So exiling and death triggers are doubled. I’ll have to double check specific ruling, but think it would work.
Please do a leinore autumn sovereign deck again. I used your damia sage of stone deck and absolutely love it. I'm definitely going to your Patreon. This guy knows he stuff.
Unfortunately there's been a mix up in the video: Gandalf does not care about legendary permanents' triggered abilities, it cares about the *event* of legendary permanents ETBing (or LTBing) triggering something. For example, Anafenza's triggers only get doubled when a legendary creature enters the battlefield, not for any other creature, despite her being legendary. This opens up synergies with other permanent types like enchantments though. Cather's crusade for example triggers twice for every legendary creature ETBing, or Felidar Retreat for every legendary land put on the battlefield. Just to name some examples of what is also possible with Gandalf. This however is also your friendly reminder that rule 603.2e exists, and that delayed triggered abilities (e.g., that induced by Adarkar Valkyrie) do not get doubled :(
I have gotten mixed answers on this, but does Gandalf's ability or others like it double triggers of things that are already on the battlefield (IE Belakor's damage when demons ETB), or does it also apply to things that happen when a certain creature enters (IE solemn finding a land)?
Yes it does cause things already on the battlefield to trigger. But those things triggering have to be because of a legendary creature or artifct leaving or entering.
@@iamunnami I don't think so. It triggers off a lot less things, and it also doesn't prevent your opponent's things from triggering. Could be wrong, but that's how I see it
Am I wrong or wouldn't Mirrorworks trigger twice since it has a triggered effect triggered by a permanent ETBing? Also can't help but think that this is a pretty large flavor fail? What part of Gandalf the White's character is related to the benevolent trickster-ish vibe of the blink archetype OR the legendary and artifact theme? Imagine one of your crowning achievements being to help the people of middle earth to destroy the greatest artifact of all time and being given an ARTIFACT theme. Flash is the only part that makes sense.
Why does this card double up “dying” triggers? dying triggers when a card is put into the graveyard but Gandalf specifically says he doubles “leave the battlefield” triggers. Or is “dying” a subset of leave the battlefield triggers?
Nope. Entering with the counters is a static ability not a triggered ability, and moving them to another creature is a death trigger, not an LTB trigger
Does this double up death triggers too? Because it's the putting it in the graveyard that causes a death trigger to trigger, not it leaving the battlefield. Let me know if I'm missing something here
Yes, that’s exactly how it works!!! It doesn’t matter where the triggered ability triggers from, as long as it resulted from a permanent leaving the battlefield, like sad robot’s trigger would draw 2, it would trigger twice
The Mightstone and Weakstone have a colourless colour identity. Oddly enough, cards that Meld don't have the color identity of the things they turn into when they meld, unlike transforming cards and basically anything else in Magic
Depends if that deck has a lot of legendary creatures and artifacts with ETB or LTB effects or not. I think Elesh Norn is a lot more powerful because it's not restricted like that, and also because it shuts down all of your opponents effects
No, it wouldn't. Martyr's Bond says when it's 'put into a graveyard from the battlefield' which is the same thing as dying, but is not the same thing as leaving the battlefield. I'm going to try to explain what I think you're asking. If I'm wrong, feel free to ask again and I would love to take the time to explain it to you. The first ability of the card, 'Flash', let's you cast this card at instant speed (on anyone's turn, and at any point when you are given the option to cast a spell or activate an ability), and obviously works when the card is not on the battlefield, usually when it's in your hand, but it could be anywhere. The second ability on the card, 'you may cast legendary spells and artifact spells as though they had Flash', only works while this card is on the battlefield. It lets you cast other cards (providing that they are either legendary or artifacts) at instant speed (on anyone's turn and at any point when you're given the option to cast a spell or activate an ability) You are allowed to have any number of legendary cards on the battlefield under your control.
