I blame Tim Minchin for the emotional rollercoaster. It is that simple melody with powerful lyrics that just hits deep every time…

Emma Thompson was the lead in the first West End show I ever saw (along with Robert Lindsay) -- Me and My Girl, in around 1985. It was her big break. I still remember her, Robert, and all the Pearly Kings and Queens pinching my cheek and calling me gorgeous during the Lambeth Walk. I'm just grateful I didn't get kicked out of the theatre for singing along to all the songs at the top of my 6yo lungs! Fond memories :)

Tim Minchin wrote a lot of these songs so it's no wonder that they are so lyrically and musically unique. He has such a knack for that melding of quirkiness into his songs. Check out him doing the "Three Minute Song" and you'll get a sense of where this came from. As to doing more of these type of reactions... Hell Yeah! This was fantastic. I would love to see you do a break down of Les Misérables, particularly Philip Quast as Javert. His version is quintessential and the way he delivered on the arrangement is just a master class in musical theatre.

i also believe he implied basing Matildas songs off his daughter, who is on the autism spectrum. i feel like it really reflects in Quiet, thats why it resonated with so many neurodivergent, traumatized, and disabled viewers.

It was an impressive video. I really like this idea of revisiting musicals, and it would even be great if you did a comparison between musicals from various decades, from a century ago to today. More than one of your followers may never have heard of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Dean Martin...
Not in vain, the 40's/50's were years in which the musical genre reached impressive heights. I imagine that the biggest problem is the magnitude of such an analysis, but it is also very likely that you can find a real evolution in the way of singing of the artists...
Anyway, whatever you do, you do it in such an enjoyable way that I'm sure all of us who see your work will be gratifyingly pleased.
    A big hug from Spain

I'm so glad to finally see someone pointing out that Emma did really well, most reactions I've seen said that her singing was the part of the movie they didn't like. Emma has been my favourite actress since forever, so to be fair I'm probably very biased, but I thought it was very impressive for someone who definitely is an actor first and not a singer who can act. The character voice was great and very fitting imo. I knew she could sing from the 2017 Beauty and The Beast (as Mrs Potts) and a production of Sweeney Todd at the Lincoln Center (as Mrs Lovett). I even found out that she was in the musical Me and My Girl when she was still young and not really known well. So yes, I know she definitely wouldn't call herself a singer, but singing has accompanied her career enough over the years to prove that she's capable enough to be asked to do projects where singing is required again and again. This was a very nice breakdown of why this particular performance worked really well, put my thoughts into words exactly, thank you!

So I was super excited for this musical because I adore the original 90's Matilda, but oh man, this hit SO much harder. Just sucked me right in, and still hasn't let go, I don't want it to. The songs were awesome, Miss Honey's made me bawl, Quiet almost got me because I do that myself too, and the huge number at the end I was grinning from ear to ear. I seriously don't even think I can watch the original anymore. Seriously this is my Matilda now.

Fairy Godmother this was a pleasant surprise so glad you reacted to it. Have you seen the West End musical Matilda? It has been running for 10 years now.
I was bothered by Miss Honey's "My House" as well for the reasons you mentioned.
I only follow 2 singer-songwriters Tim Minchin the songwriter and lyricist for Matilda the Musical who also wrote an additional song for this movie adaptation of the musical is one. (Avi Kaplan the founding bass singer for Pentatonix is the other one). Tim is a fascinating multifaceted composer and lyricist (also comedian, singer, actor among other things) who knows all about being judged by your accent - Tim is Australian.
Tim also wrote the music and lyrics for the musical "Groundhog Day" which is being made into a movie next year.
Tim himself played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar the Arena version. The trouble with reacting to that is that Andrew Lloyd Webber had the DVD autotuned for all the singers I believe. Here is a tribute show for Tim Rice that has a live performance by Tim Minchin you can hear of "Heaven On Their Minds". ua-cam.com/video/q5kqVtSbFY8/v-deo.html

I think the East End/Cockney accent is because it's typically associated with working class, wheeler dealer types, like Mr. Wormwood... It's the kind of accent you'd classically expect from someone working a market stall or whatever... He's an aspiring salesman, but without the class you'd expect from someone with more "culture"... They're the types who care more about TV than books... It makes sense that his wife would be of similar character... Style over substance... Of course they don't represent all people from such an origin, but it really fits their type of characters... It fits the way their dialogue is written in the book too, if I remember correctly... I wouldn't say it was based on Only Fools and Horses, so much as they were both based on a similar type of character... I mean Del was dishonest, but he was generally a nice guy... Mr. Wormwood is more on the sleazy end of things.

How about Danny Devito In the original movie. And how powerful Mara Wilson was in her acting against stars as rhea Perlman. This isn’t a movie to be dismissed, this is a movie against it’s time.

I'd love to hear your analysis of Cakra Khan's cover of Tennessee Whiskey. I don't think I've heard anyone talk about the vocal skill and techniques behind hat jazzy husky raspy style of singing.
