- Obeah: A Resilient Spiritual Practice in Jamaica
Opal reminds us of the umbilical cord that connects African descendants across the globe & keeps us forever connected. Here she discusses and shares an autobiographical poem about the power of Obeah, a spiritual practice rooted in the African traditions of people in Jamaica. My Mother Was a Obeah Woman calls into question the hypocrisy inherent in the conduct of those who have tried to criminalize and erase the practice. Obeah, Dr. Adisa asserts, is a symbol of resilience, self-determination and connection to the Earth. Despite the colonialists' hypocrisy in criminalizing it while freely practicing their own European Christian faiths, Obeah has persisted as a sacred way of life for many Jamaicans, including her mother whose influence has shaped her life.
My Mother Was An Obeah Woman...Love it!
Mom was a healer! Obia is what the European people called us to make us believe our way was the devil way. My great grandmother had the same gift. This was our way. We were robbed of our ancestors and roots.
