- On 27 April 1989, ITN's cameras captured a bizarre event staged to celebrate a milestone in the digging of the channel tunnel, when French construction workers made record-breaking progress on their side of the tunnel by breaking through from the under-sea service tunnel to the site of the French rail-link in Sangatte. Giant cut outs of historical figures loomed over the construction site as people gathered, many in fancy dress, to watch an enormous, Mitsubishi-designed drill break through the rock wall.

The cut out figures are Henry I of France on the left and Henry VIII of England on the right. They held a meeting together at the Field of the Cloth of Gold.
