- Hello you wonderful people! There has been a lot of behind-the-scenes work (which explains the lack of recent uploads), but believe me - it is worth the wait. There is going to be a never-ending supply of Elton John shows that will be uploaded to this channel (and other people can join in to help out if they want)! "TheEltonBootlegs" recently came out of retirement, so that is very good! I miss his views on shows (and our fights over Japan 1988 and the Royal Gala show of 1988)!
While I was beginning work on another batch of tape transfers, I stumbled upon this 20 minute recording from the first annual Rainforest benefit show in 1991. I already had uploaded Elton's songs from the 1996-1997 shows, so this one was going to be interesting. Needless to say, I was completely blown away by the performances. I had to stop what I was doing and immediately get this uploaded to UA-cam! This upload is a preview to what's to come in 2015. This four-song recording has decent quality -- so you can hear everything pretty clearly.
Elton's first live performances of 1991 are absolutely fantastic. With his newfound sobriety and lack of touring, his voice returned to its natural state for the time period: A fresh-sounding tone without any sort of growl or stability problems. Elton's voice is in perfect shape and these performances are first class. Let's talk about them!
"Sacrifice" is possibly the best solo version as Elton sings the song extremely beautifully with no roughness and he sounds better than the record version with his tone sounding very light, "Your Song" is a brilliant interpretation with Elton singing it like the late 80s versions (although his tone is better here and he sounds pristine). He does fantastic embellishments and shows no fear in going for the higher belts. "Come Down In Time" is a duet version with Sting - but both men sound great on the song with Elton hitting an awesome embellishment during his part (and he sounds like a blend of his late 80s voice with some 70s lightness), and "Girl From Ipanema" is a fun performance with Elton and Sting being joined by two Brazilian musicians!
ENJOY!!!
Note: The stage banters are hilarious!
Oh God-he sounds so good- love hearing the gasps of surprised audience- what a treat
I was totally shocked when I first heard this! I sounded like the audience members!
I keep coming back to this one. The classic boyish Elton tone shines through in sections here. Not just early 80s prime but mid 70s lightness. Really astounding
It's what happens when you have a rested voice and sing in a relaxed environment - you get gems like this!
Wow! He sounds fantastic.
Absolutely! Very clean voice!
This is an absolutely stunningly beautiful rendition.
It's one of his best live performances from the era. This is basically his studio voice in a live environment!
He sounds really good when he's had a break.
Absolutely - sounds lighter and younger!
I think people gasped because he sounded so fresh. He did the right thing by taking a long break in 1991. It gave him the time to have a proper rest after many years of touring and drug abuse that nearly killed him. Elton is a true survivor.
Absolutely!
@@GregsynthWizard Having a break gives him a studio like voice. I wish this was professionally recorded
@@jaggass Least this exists!
Rainforest has had some of the most amazing performances over the years. I wish there were some soundboard recordings of these. But I am glad there were people there with their tape recorders. Thanks so much for the upload. Here's to a wonderful 2015!
You're welcome! Hope your 2015 is great!
I really love these Rainforest shows, this one imparticular is worth noting as Elton's in one of the best shapes of his life (Sacrifice sees his tone being BETTER than the studio, and his voice being light and squeaky clean).
Your Song is reminiscent of the one-off Gala show from 84, Elton is amazing, absolutely no Donald Duck cameos to be found here. (Thank God!)
Although all the Rainforest shows are very good I prefer this one to all the others, this is the first Rainforest show I heard and I've just always thought that this was the best one!
It's a great series of performances! The 1994 Rainforest show has great stuff on it as well!
Can't wait to hear it! What's your favorite year of the Rainforest shows?
@@EthanThompson-Murray 1991 and 1994 are my favorites. 1996 is right behind them as well!
There's no bad one of the bunch! I'd love to hear some other songs with the voice that he had on this set, it would have been amazing!
omg, this really does sound better than the record version.
Yeah, it's amazing!
Just beautiful! Another reminder of why Elton will always be my favorite singer!!
Yeah - he's one of my favorites as well! Performances like this prove he's got a set of pipes!
Gorgeous
So glad you're back!
And I'm back for good! This show has kick-started the channel back into high gear!
So excited, I can not wait :)
Believe me -- 2015 is gonna be THIS channel's year! :D

The defenetive performance of this song, makes the studio version sound awful in comparison
The studio version is very good.
Is this the only show he did 1991? Setlist fm only lists this show.
He also had a couple of guest appearances with George Michael throughout the year!
He did the recorded one at Wembley 1991 as George returned the favour when Elton invited him on stage at Live Aid.
True!
