    Why don't we ever see satellites from the ISS ? If there's that many up there surely we would be able to see them eventually wouldn't we? Just wondering.

      Half_Finis Just wondering; how the earth can maintan its position on the space if earth is flat. And also, if tons of planet is flat, then why sometimes we got hit by an asteroid? (Cuz if planets is not moving, stand still like a statue; then Asteroid doesn't exist. Cuz Asteroid can travel as long as "Space does exist". If space does exist, then a planet must travell to maintain its position; otherwise it will collide with other planet at anytime)...
      Just wondering

    I'm still confused I used miles and my calculations come to 140k miles distance around the earth at 22k miles out in space making the speed necessary to travel that distance in a 24 hour day 5750 mph. Now this part is the more confusing how does the satellite compensate for the fact that the earth is traveling through space at apparently 66k miles per hour chasing the sun. I will stop there not considering the sun speed or milky way speed

    Correct me if I am wrong but the satellite is set into place out in space and it is the earth rotation that is what people think is the satellite traveling at 17000 mph when it is not the satellite that is moving its just the earth is rotating in the center of all the satellites that stand still in space miles high of the earth is why no crashing into each other

    • @spatrk6634
      @spatrk6634 2 роки тому +1

      speed of satellite is not depending on the earths rotation.
      its dependent upon the radius of orbit and the mass of the central body that the satellite is orbiting.
      basicaly higher the orbit, slower the orbital speed.
      so no, satellites dont stand still in space.
      if it stood still it would fall to the earth.
      it needs to have sideways motion thats fast enough relative to the distance of the planet and pull of gravity so it can "fall" but keep missing the surface because its sideways motion is fast enough.
      to simplify even more, if you have an object tied to a string of certain length.
      if you want that object to spin around you and keep to from touching the ground you will need to spin it at certain velocity that depends on the length of the string,
      to slow and it will fall.
      if the string is very long, the speed you are spinning it doesnt need to be very fast.
      but if you start shortening the string, speed must increase if you dont want to let it fall down.
      orbiting is similar to centrifuge.
      you want to keep the speed sideways so that you dont fall down, but do full circles or in this case elipses around the center.

  • @radialwellendichtrin
    @radialwellendichtrin 10 років тому

    1:37 That's actually not very accurate. It's mostly true for circular orbits, but two objects can have a high relative velocity at one point, if you consider elliptical orbits.
    Furthermore the two objects can have different inclinations. If the two objects have a relative inclination of pi, they can hit each other at any point in the orbit (assuming their RAAN and argument of periapsis lign up).

    • @sciBRIGHT
      @sciBRIGHT  10 років тому +2

      At 1:37 I was referring to circular orbits at the same orbit height above earth. Obviously it's a bit like going around the circumference of a circle. If you have two objects going the same speed they will never hit (assuming they're not heading towards each other.) That's why I said satellites are unlikely to hit the back of another satellite if they're orbiting around the same height around earth.
      Other sort of orbits do cause problems where they might collide, but in circular orbits it's quite unlikely if you have satellites heading the same way (which some don't so you might have side-on collisions like the collision between Iridium 33 and Kosmos-2251 on February 10, 2009.
      Thanks for the comment!

    • @radialwellendichtrin
      @radialwellendichtrin 10 років тому

      Well I guess the argument works for active satellite, but those (should at least in theory!!) have a low risk of colliding with other active satellites since they can actively avoid each other. There is a service at NORAD that informs the operator of a certain satellite that they will have a near miss in the next hours or days. Based on these collision risks (which always have a certain degree of uncertainty) the operators can plot a course correction.
      The bigger problem is unoperational satellites and general debris. And the debris will spread over all inclinations. In the aftermath of Iridium-Kosmos the particles emerging from that collision started out in one relatively narrow range of inclinations which spread to nearly every angle within a year. The various orbit pertubations cause these changes of the orbit parameters.
      You can rely on an active satellite staying on course, but that satellite will also be able to avoid other objects. The inactive stuff is the problem.

    • @sciBRIGHT
      @sciBRIGHT  10 років тому +2

      radialwellendichtrin Yes. Considering all satellites are using about 0.0000000000005% of available orbit space, there's a lot of space between them.
