The Israel Lobby in the US - VPRO documentary - 2007

  • For many years now the American foreign policy has been characterised by the strong tie between the United States and Israel. Does the United States in fact keep Israel on its feet? And how long will it continue to do so? In 2006 the American political scientists John Mearsheimer and Steve Walt published the controversial article 'The Israel Lobby and US foreign policy'. In it they state that it is not, or no longer, expedient for the US to support and protect present-day Israel.
The documentary sheds light on both parties involved in the discussion: those who wish to maintain the strong tie between the US and Israel, and those who were critical of it and not infrequently became 'victims' of the lobby. The question arises to what extend the pro-Israel lobby ultimately determines the military and political importance of Israel itself.
With political scientist John Mearsheimer, neocon Richard Perle, lobby organization AIPAC, televangelist John Hagee, historian Tony Judt, Human Rights Watch director Kenneth Roth, colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, Democrat Earl Hilliard, Israeli peace negotiator Daniel Levy and investigative journalist Michael Massing.

I recently mentioned in a conversation with some coworkers that Egypt would be a dream destination for me as a history buff-visit the pyramids, temples, etc. One of them suggested Israel, and I replied that I disagree with things Israel does. Instantly she went on a tirade, labeling me an anti-semite and saying "idiots like you have kept us oppressed!" I think that sums the mindset of the Israel Lobbyists in a nutshell right there.

Israel Lobby funds presidential campaigns and their candidate ALWAYS wins. Israel Lobby dictates economic policy, domestic policy and foreign policy. Israel Lobby decides who chairs the fed (it will always be a Jew). Israel Lobby decides who heads the private banks that control the Fed. Israel Lobby controls when and who we go to war with. Israel Lobby controls who finances the war, on both sides. Israel Lobby decides when the Fed should print money. Israel Lobby controls our spending levels and unsustainable debt. Israel Lobby controls the media, which is why you rarely hear or see them being reported on. Israel Lobby will attack the career of anyone who attempts to shine a light on them, they will fabricate lies and deception to bring the person down. With the control they have they can change public opinion overnight, and can turn the public against anyone with their lies and deception. This has scared most of our leaders from acting against them. Instead they support them for fear of coming under attack from them. If you do not support the Israel Lobby, you are an enemy of Israel. If you want to know who to blame, look no further. What can you do? BDS - Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions against ISRAEL and any company that associates with ISRAEL. Attack them at home first, then we will finish them off here second.

Excellent piece. What can be learned from this is that the state of Israel better start making amends to the Palestinians and getting chummy with their neighbors. Richard Pearl deludes himself by believing that the American people and government will ALWAYS defend Israel. That said, America will keep defending her which ironically will hurt rather than help Israel in the long run. We'll see how much longer Israel gives lip service to a peace with the people of Palestine whilst developing land.

8:39 What this man just said is astounding. He openly admits that Israel is a burden on the U.S, and yet the latter would rather jeopardize its interests and relations within Middle-East rather than give up on the liability that Israel represents, therefore putting Zionist interests above American interests, alienating the U.S from the rest of the world just to maintain some useless relation with a state holding a record worse than that of apartheid South Africa! He just confirmed everything that was said! And yet he still denies it!
    11:31
What's ironic is that all these African-Americans are supporting a state which was secretly one of the biggest backers of the apartheid regime of South Africa and that has shown a massive amount of racism against non-Jews and Jews of colour.

I was disapointed when Obama gave his first speech at AIPAC
This is the kind of thing that brought us 9/11.

I am a Serb. I live in Serbia (former Yugoslavia). We, Serbs are collateral damage of Jewish/USA foreign policy. While they heavily devastate muslim countries in Asia, they support muslims in southeastern Europe against Serbs and Serbia (we, Serbs are Orthodox Christians). Then US officials say that they have uniform and principal policy. What a hypocrisy. Think about it, each time you listen to lies about former Yugoslavia, especially about Bosnia and Serbian province of Kosovo and Metohija.

Just the foreign policy and not your people of course.

Jimmy Carter and others are working to obtain this. God bless folks who stand tall.

The problem for me is that there seem to be people with a lot of influence over our government who have the same mindset that she displayed, and attack any difference of opinion with the same sheer ferocity. The US policy toward the entire region seems to so often center on "Israel Good-Arabs Bad!" and I just don't see how such a simplistic mindset can possibly work.

I have seen Larry Wilkerson be very sensible in the past (his criticism of the Iraq war) but his criticism his a morass of circumlocution. He is critical of their scholarship then basically goes on the agree with all their conclusions with the caveat that American can't change course on its Israeli policy even though it is no longer strategically sensible because we are too "culturally" connected and because of the political pressure of AIPAC.

@Outthereandback I do give Jews credit. They fight tooth and nail for their interests. Even better, they wrap their interests in universal language. As Richard Perle cleverly noted, "Israel's interests coincide with America's interests." Utter nonsense!
You should read a book called "The Culture of Critique" by Kevin MacDonald. He discusses Jewish intellectual movements that pushed their agenda, and does so in a scholarly and non-attacking manner. Msg me for more info.
