- Maja Buždon was born on August 15, 1923 in the village of Praputnjak, then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Her mother Božica died of tuberculosis in April 1930 and Maja and her two brothers were raised by their maternal grandmother. The family lived in severe poverty and Maja, who was described as an extremely quiet and withdrawn child, only finished a four-year regional elementary school. She then worked as a seamstress in Zagreb, and after the outbreak of the Second World War and the German conquest of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in April 1941, she joined the Ustaša movement.
As Germany and its Axis allies invaded and dismembered Yugoslavia, the Germans and the Italians endorsed the proclamation of the so-called Independent State of Croatia by the fanatically nationalist, fascist, separatist, and terrorist Ustaša organization on April 10, 1941.

Thank you for creating this video. Most people outside the former Yugoslavia region are unaware of Ustaše’s war crimes towards Serbs, Jews and Roma, so this really helps to raise the awareness of it.

I live a couple of miles away from the former Jasenovac concentration camp and one of my neighbour's great grandfathers have been actually saved by one of the members of the ustaša who recognised him and managed to get him out of the camp. To this day his relatives dont know who it was because his great grandfather refused to tell who saved him.

Despite its name, the Independent State of Croatia was a satellite of the Third Reich. The state was similarly organized. In Croatia, there were racial laws against Serbs, as in Germany against Jews. During the short time of their state's existence, the Ustasha managed to destroy most of the Serbs who lived in that area (today's Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as part of Vojvodina in Serbia). This is best evidenced by the population data, when comparing the number of Serbs in the area before and after the war.
