When you think about it, the part about painted vs. non-painted objects is a result of the plastic's slight translucency in the first couple of millimeters beneath the surface (sub-surface scattering), kinda like how our skin allows some light to shine through in various areas.
Thanks for this video and the product you showed! Tamiya is the most familiar I'm with so this is nice and I wanted something for my kit that didn't look rusted but still weathered. Though what would you recommend to give some rust effect. Also if I somehow can't find a similar brush, could I just use pieces of sponge?
Quick question, needed to know if this workflow will work Grey Primer > Acrylic Base Painting > Water Decals > Tamiya Gloss Coat > Panel Lining (Enamel) > Tamiya Gloss Coat > Weathering (Acrylic/tamiya weatherting kit) Does tamiya gloss coat clear TS-13 help in preserving the layers underneath from paint thinners?
Wait, would it be recommended to apply top coat first or after the chipping affect. The plastic on these kits tend to be shiny so I can't tell if I'm supposed to do this than top coat or top coat and than paint? I do really wanna try this badly but I don't wanna start unless I know so I don't end up screwing up
Nice work! Funny video. I've never seen anyone use the "just turn your bottle upside-down" method. Are you against shaking the paint for some reason or just not willing to expend the energy? 😆Just curious. Thanks again for the video.
What is the name of those mini-rectangle/cube looking tamiya paint bottles??? I've always seen the regular circle shaped ones, but ive never seen those ones online. I'd be good bcuz its cheaper so i can buy lots to test em out lol. Thanks in advance!
Is the acrylic based paint waterproof, or does it come off easily. Do you have to prime or top coat it. Im thinking about getting a jar of tamiya acrylic neutral gary. Thank You!
Rexy Ah I see, well I've never tried weathering using other paint types. But since the properties of all paints are that they react with their own thinners, I will say it's safe to use it. But make sure that if the paint underneath is acrylic be extremely careful so you don't scratch off the color along with the weathering.
Rexy just trail and error my man, that's what this hobby is all about, for me at least, try it out on a test piece just to be safe before going onto your project.
Ok sir, im buying enemel and taymia weather master. If you never opened this redtube channel, I'll legit be confused between what paint to use, and the bigass transformer dildo would never exist. THANK YOU for answering all my shitty questions, its rare that redtubers actually take their time and answer the comments. Hope your channel grow ;) (i subbed)
Slap a matte top coat before you weather your kit so you wont damage the plastic and the paint before the matte coat when you are thinning the weather effects.
I'm getting a hg iron blooded orphans barbatos lupus. I was wondering if I could use acrylic (even tho is hard to remove) to do this. Would the paint stick if it's just bare plastic?
can you dry brush it directly on top of the paint? example: tamiya primer- tamiya spray paint- dry brush with enamel- mr hobby top coat. or do you have to top coat before dry brushing?
Spoon Spoon you can, but make sure do not mess up at all! Because if you do, and you try to clean it with thinner you might wash away the paint beneath as well. It's always best to be cautious in this hobby, I've learned the hard way hahaha.
At 14:48 I don't plan on painting any of my Gundams, but I do plan on starting to spray a Flat topcoat on them, does that count? Should I apply a topcoat first before attempting to do this?
wow. your tutorial is so good man :) i really want to do this but i already coated my rx-78-2 with flat clear. can i stilk do this? i hope you will respond. thanks!!
Gavbo McAutism it's up to you really. But for me I topcoat to help protect the paint underneath. If you don't have paint then I suppose it's fine to go about with or without.
You can may these all from Hobby Point, the ones I go to are located respectively at Bras Brasah and Jurong SAFRA. You can also go to Hobby Art Gallery or M-Workshop located at Sunshine Plaza, Bencoolen street. All the materials you need can be found in these shops. Though for Pla plate I recommend you go to M-Workshop, they have the most stock and more variety of plastic thickness sizes.
If I'm going to do a flat topcoat should I do that before or after weathering? This is assuming I've already painted the build and it's all snapped together
in my style. i apply topcoat first before doing this effect to make more visible, because if you do this effect before you apply topcoat the effect is not that visible. specially if you use flat top coat. but its up to your taste :)
hiImJoshyu yes always apply topcoat beforehand. I suggest flat because it'll roughen up the surface, easier for the brush to lay out the paint. Topcoat also helps to protect the paint underneath from thinner if you do minor clean ups. Topcoat is important!
Well you should give your paint a gloss or flat coat first so you won't damage it when weathering. Once all that is done then give it a flat coat ( flat coats fit weathering style better ) and you're done 👍🏻
Might not be the answer you're looking for; but you can put a top coat on before you dry brush, it'll be easier to rub off your mistakes without taking the base coat off.
+Yong Hong Goh I paint, then give a gloss coat. Gloss coat makes the part smooth and helps panel line washes flow better. Once I've panel washed and applied all the decals, I'll dry brush and then give a flat topcoat to seal everything down
lol at 2:30 - 2:40 you know that already to make some silly joke or u got surprise in that empty bottle... anyways ur review is cool man i saved it for my future reference God bless you bro. 👌🙏💪🏼
normally i think i would take the paint out of the jar without letting it touch the cap, and close it right after i got the right amount, so that it won't dry up or react to the air
Eng Xian Feng perhaps some grey and silver. Silver on the dark green and grey on the light. Maybe add some brown streaks here and there for rust or dirt effects
I do shake it, I let it sink to the cap, as I explained, so it will be easier for the brush to get paint. And I only let it sink got a few seconds not a few minutes
jeffrey chew ahh yes it was the bane of my existence back in the day. I think I mentioned In the video, to use the thinner sparingly and to wipe it off as soon as possible before it dries, for if it does it'll eat away at the plastic and it WILL crack under enough pressure
Hello! Could anyone explain how the rust/grime is achieved on the torso section; i can see the dry-brushing effect is exlpained well, but how he achieved the off-white streaks and stains is what interests me too! Anyone know?
Jordan Reynolds Ahahaha you saw it from the thumbnail right? All I did was take the small brush, put very little grey ( or whatever color you want ) and made lines going down. Just do the streaks wherever you feel it would apprear in real life
Tonezone117 I mean if the gundum was real. the shield for example, has two different colors of metal showing underneath the "paint" the white shows dark grey metal underneath. the blue parts show a lighter grey metal underneath. so if the shield were real, would it be made of two different metals?
nice one!
ZakuAurelius Thank you very much Sir!
Love the look of the chest piece! Many builders seem to underestimate the value of grime to tie everything together.
AWESOME! i been trying to learn how Type V3 does his weathering for a while, this shows me exactly
thanks a lot
263kiki Glad I could do that for ya man
aahhh... painting gunpla with the sound of the rain (I assume from the background noice.). how relaxing.
When you think about it, the part about painted vs. non-painted objects is a result of the plastic's slight translucency in the first couple of millimeters beneath the surface (sub-surface scattering), kinda like how our skin allows some light to shine through in various areas.
Yeah, you are right! That is precisely the plastic feel that breaks immersion
Thank you so much! I’ve watched so many weathering tutorials but they weren’t my taste! Thank you so much!
very helpful indeed sir, you are a pro with tutorials already. Now I can try weathering some with old kits to test it!
Thanks for the video. I learned a couple of very important things that I did not consider before!
your techniques are simple but effective. got someone to emulate now :)
Jancel Abobo awwww thanks man. But there are tons of better guys out there you should look up to
Quick question, needed to know if this workflow will work
Grey Primer > Acrylic Base Painting > Water Decals > Tamiya Gloss Coat > Panel Lining (Enamel) > Tamiya Gloss Coat > Weathering (Acrylic/tamiya weatherting kit)
Does tamiya gloss coat clear TS-13 help in preserving the layers underneath from paint thinners?
Nice you're actually the first one I have found that's using enamels and not latex and acrylic.
Yay! Nice tutorial Ill definitely be trying this on my gm!
didnt thank you before but i applied this to two of my gundams and a zoid, nice results, thanks for the easy tutorial.
mauricinho I'm super glad I could help! Also great job man
I did my first weathering because of this video, I tought was hard but instead was fun
Lol the empty bottle the best part. Thanks for the tutorial
Wait, would it be recommended to apply top coat first or after the chipping affect. The plastic on these kits tend to be shiny so I can't tell if I'm supposed to do this than top coat or top coat and than paint? I do really wanna try this badly but I don't wanna start unless I know so I don't end up screwing up
Thanks from Brazil for this video!
I did not expect the Just Do It. So when it happened, I spat out my drink all over my monitor.
Vlad Alkorrah Nar Rannoch HAAHHAAH
building this one now can't wait to try this out thanks for the tips in this
Eric Rossi no problem man
Nice work! Funny video. I've never seen anyone use the "just turn your bottle upside-down" method. Are you against shaking the paint for some reason or just not willing to expend the energy? 😆Just curious. Thanks again for the video.
Looking good dog, thinking I'll use this on my Tau Warhammer Army mechs.
Hi uhmmm quick question. Can we use acrylic paints for dry brushing?
Edit: the kit is bare plastic just with the decals. Would it be fine?
What is the name of those mini-rectangle/cube looking tamiya paint bottles??? I've always seen the regular circle shaped ones, but ive never seen those ones online. I'd be good bcuz its cheaper so i can buy lots to test em out lol. Thanks in advance!
thanks man! it really helps me, oh yea..do we have to apply the top coat first before dry brushing? I use matt-flat
Arya Rifki Pratama only topcoat before brushing if the parts are PAINTED.
Tonezone117 thank man!
Im 4 years late, but this guy's hilarious :)) nice tutorial tho !!
Is the acrylic based paint waterproof, or does it come off easily.
Do you have to prime or top coat it.
Im thinking about getting a jar of tamiya acrylic neutral gary.
Thank You!
Rexy So you want to dry brush using acrylic?
yes sir, first time dry brush and enamel shits are rare on amazon and they r not pirme so fuck life.
Rexy Ah I see, well I've never tried weathering using other paint types. But since the properties of all paints are that they react with their own thinners, I will say it's safe to use it. But make sure that if the paint underneath is acrylic be extremely careful so you don't scratch off the color along with the weathering.

Before dry brushing, you mix the paint with thiner first or you use the paint directly without mixing with thinner ?
yuridika prawira no mix
Slap a matte top coat before you weather your kit so you wont damage the plastic and the paint before the matte coat when you are thinning the weather effects.
Thanks a lot.... I need this, I am newbie
Dry brush very fit for in ground battles 👍🏻
great tutorial!
If a kit hasn't been painted yet can you do this with acrylic paints?
any advice for brush cleaning?
This is high quality video for real
I'm getting a hg iron blooded orphans barbatos lupus. I was wondering if I could use acrylic (even tho is hard to remove) to do this. Would the paint stick if it's just bare plastic?
Awesome video thank you so much
can you dry brush it directly on top of the paint?
example: tamiya primer- tamiya spray paint- dry brush with enamel- mr hobby top coat.

will tamiya enamel paint ruin the plastic? ... will dissolve or crack the plastic
Thanks from Brazil!
It's 3.52 am and I get to the Just the tip part... You scared the shit out of me
Thx dude. Really nice tutorial !
6:12 yeah that's right
can we still do weathering after top coat or before ?and also for the decals do we put them on before or after top coat
will the thinner remove the chipping I do or lining with pencil ?
This really helped me. thanks
At 14:48 I don't plan on painting any of my Gundams, but I do plan on starting to spray a Flat topcoat on them, does that count? Should I apply a topcoat first before attempting to do this?
Thanks for the help
Nice job
wow. your tutorial is so good man :) i really want to do this but i already coated my rx-78-2 with flat clear. can i stilk do this? i hope you will respond. thanks!!
Thank you ! And yes it is fine to dry brush over topcoat, half of that Ez8 was in flat coat hahaha
Where do you find these paints? I can only find the chrom silver enamel in singapore.
Do you spraycoat the entire model or each part separately?
I'll definitely try this, thanks
Should I put a matte topcoat on it because he never says that
i wanna try this, what kind of brush should i use?
Would dry brushing on top of a top coat be better than just the bare model of would it not be worth it to waste the top coat?
Gavbo McAutism it's up to you really. But for me I topcoat to help protect the paint underneath. If you don't have paint then I suppose it's fine to go about with or without.
This gundam was always my favorite after that it's the rx-78
Just the tip???
Bryan N yes sir
Bryan N xd hahaha "just the tips"
^^ He had to go there! :D
its not gay if its just the tip
Where can I get that weather brush with busted hairs? What type is it?
So I use grey for white parts and silver for coloured parts?
do you clear coat your models? if so would you do the weathering before or after you would apply clear coat?
Pretty sure the clear coat seals the weathering in to prevent it from smudging
eeh, where in singapore did you buy your plaplates, enamel and acrylic paints. and do you know where to buy puttys too?
You can may these all from Hobby Point, the ones I go to are located respectively at Bras Brasah and Jurong SAFRA. You can also go to Hobby Art Gallery or M-Workshop located at Sunshine Plaza, Bencoolen street. All the materials you need can be found in these shops. Though for Pla plate I recommend you go to M-Workshop, they have the most stock and more variety of plastic thickness sizes.
The m-workshop and hobby art gallery, are they inside malls or outside?
+Ac Ze inside
Oh wait, what station?
Am I wrong for liking a clean kit ?
How did you do the oily look on the chest piece?
nice work
i wonder if this can be done with acrylic paint
If I'm going to do a flat topcoat should I do that before or after weathering? This is assuming I've already painted the build and it's all snapped together
in my style. i apply topcoat first before doing this effect to make more visible, because if you do this effect before you apply topcoat the effect is not that visible. specially if you use flat top coat. but its up to your taste :)
RED L I'll give your way a shot thanks :)
hiImJoshyu yes always apply topcoat beforehand. I suggest flat because it'll roughen up the surface, easier for the brush to lay out the paint. Topcoat also helps to protect the paint underneath from thinner if you do minor clean ups. Topcoat is important!
no problem :) keep it up!
Any tips on whether should I do topcoating before weathering or after?
Well you should give your paint a gloss or flat coat first so you won't damage it when weathering. Once all that is done then give it a flat coat ( flat coats fit weathering style better ) and you're done 👍🏻
so thats how you can use thinner when you where removing the weathering from the bluepart?
+Nick Andersen well yes if it was painted that is. This Ez8 was unpainted. BUT if it were painted I'd Definetly topcoat it before weathering
this is a good tutorial....and i burst out laughing when you found out your bottle is empty :D
Is it still ok to use the acrylic tamiya paints for this technique? I know you said it's risky, but would all the same rules apply?
Thank you.
Depends on color. I am using acrylic Mr. Hobby. Some colors are good for it (like burned iron) some are not (like steel).
Love your editing! :D
ay thx mang im gonna use this
1 question, do u dry brush first then top coat or top coat then dry brush?
Might not be the answer you're looking for; but you can put a top coat on before you dry brush, it'll be easier to rub off your mistakes without taking the base coat off.
Thanks
+Yong Hong Goh I paint, then give a gloss coat. Gloss coat makes the part smooth and helps panel line washes flow better. Once I've panel washed and applied all the decals, I'll dry brush and then give a flat topcoat to seal everything down
thanks
How do you feel bout using paints such as Citadel minature paints or reaper paints?
Dino 55 I've never used them before hahahaha
Shout out fellow Singaporean!
Can you do a tutorial video on painting a model kit?
You're left handed too :3
Before drybrushing this model is painted or just original plastic ?
Just original plastic sir
Wow thats great :)
Thank you for this vid it really help
lol at 2:30 - 2:40 you know that already to make some silly joke or u got surprise in that empty bottle... anyways ur review is cool man i saved it for my future reference God bless you bro. 👌🙏💪🏼
Gunpla ROOK I actually didn't know it was empty lmao. I had to wing the rest of the tutorial. And thank you very much man I'm glad I could help
normally i think i would take the paint out of the jar without letting it touch the cap, and close it right after i got the right amount, so that it won't dry up or react to the air
what color would you recommend on a grey gundam like the zeta plus? also a red or orange colored one?
Use silver for it, for my customs I'll paint the armor, then do a gloss coat, dry brush and give a final flat coat
thank you!
ill try that on my first build your video was very helpful
+ehinoeg6 welcome
how about using tamiya acrylic paint?
Just the tip!!!
btw what is the suitable color(the model of the paint) for zaku?
Eng Xian Feng perhaps some grey and silver. Silver on the dark green and grey on the light. Maybe add some brown streaks here and there for rust or dirt effects
thank dude hopefully u would like to do more for this kind of video
Hi would chrome silver work for white as well or would I have to buy a neutral grey
GoGoDrone silver does not appear well on white however on darker colors it looks good
For the enamel paint, why can't you shake it before use? Instead spending few minutes for it to sinks.
I do shake it, I let it sink to the cap, as I explained, so it will be easier for the brush to get paint. And I only let it sink got a few seconds not a few minutes
can i use flat coat after doing the paint chipping with tamiya chrome silver?
packingraw sure it all depends on the effect you want
Tonezone117 thanks, won't it affect the shine of the chrome silver chipping effect if ever?
Yes it will flatten the silver finish. So if you want to let it shine flat coat the other stuff first then put silver on and leave it as it is.
Tonezone117 thank you for helping!!
I always have this problem of the x-20 thinner cracking the plastic. any advise?
jeffrey chew ahh yes it was the bane of my existence back in the day. I think I mentioned In the video, to use the thinner sparingly and to wipe it off as soon as possible before it dries, for if it does it'll eat away at the plastic and it WILL crack under enough pressure
what color would you suggest on red
osamas_goat silver and maybe some grey. Like dark grey
Was very helpful, thx
Are there any good replacements for chrome silver like maybe from another brand sense no matter where i look i cant find it in my country
xxrazerwolfxx alclad ii chrome silver is a good alternative but it's lacquer base not enamel so be cautious
Does anything bad happens ir does it look bad to wash the model and then do this?
Sir Artorias ur supposed to wash it with dish soap just so packaging grease and finger oils don't fk u up
Is he the Bob Ross of Gunpla weathering?
where do u get it in which part of Singapore
Just do the streaks wherever you feel it would apprear in real life
Tonezone117 ah! And I take it its a very small amount of paint, and whiped off? Or is it just a really heavily watered-down paint? :)
OH YES I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT HAHAHA. I did thin the paint down just a bit to make it runny
Jordan Reynolds Nope just brush it on
Tonezone117 thanks man, appreciate you taking the time to help me out :)
Is this the MG or HG version?
Is this method effective on kits that have been top coated with matte spray?
If I remember yes, the rougher the surface is the better it is for dry brushing
Did u spray it with matte before weathering?
Oh wait is it ok if i spray it first it with matte? (Lol its late)
I don't get it. is the armor of the gundum under the paint aluminium grey or dark grey.
Daniel Velasquez there's no paint on the Gundam. The plastic is white
Tonezone117 I mean if the gundum was real. the shield for example, has two different colors of metal showing underneath the "paint" the white shows dark grey metal underneath. the blue parts show a lighter grey metal underneath. so if the shield were real, would it be made of two different metals?
nice tutorial
