Hey there. Yep, I got that. Blind folks can use screen reading software to follow links and can listen to videos. It’s why I talk so much in my videos as well as demonstrate, so visually impaired folks can follow along with what I’m doing.
Hey there. If your keyboard is MIDI you can just use a MIDI port and you’ll be connected. If it uses older 5 pin DIN connectors you’ll need something like this. ua-cam.com/video/l-g5UEsn6Ws/v-deo.html
@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete. You're a great help with issues like this. I would have never figured this out except for constantly finger-banging the damned thing!
I’ve got an old Roland RD 150. I would like to connect to an ipad to gain more piano sounds. It has the 5 pin Din midi connectors. Any software you could recommend as well? So I need a DIN midi plug to USB and a adapter that takes USB to Lightening plug?
if you use the modulation wheel on the smart guitar and smart strings, the sound changes, for example the guitar sound plays like you palm mute it with your hand.
Really? I really must start consulting with you before my videos my friend. Actually, I kind of like that you can always add something here in the comments afterwards!
I have an old MIDI controller (Roland PC200 mk2) that I am trying to work with GarageBand on my iPhone. I bought the old-style MIDI round to USB cable and the Lightning to USB adapter. Plugged everything in and got nothing. Not even an error message or anything. What am I doing wrong?

Unfortunately not. GarageBand iOS has some very basic MIDI control functions. I explain all this in this video if you’d like more info. ua-cam.com/users/liveW4MFXbxtPMg?si=2v9kaL8Gao2exeSc
I got a $49 Casio keyboard and by your guidance I have the keyboard playing thru Garage Band and sound coming out the iPAD speaker Can I hook the iPAD directly into our bands PA or is the audio interface required? Thank you
If your iPad has a headphone jack you can just send a stereo line out from there. An audio interface would give you more control and better quality but the headphone jack would work. You would need a splitter if you wanted to still be able to hear your audio through headphones.
Hey there my friend. Unfortunately GarageBand iOS only supports the actual keys on a MIDI controller. I haven't found a way to get any other MIDI features to be supported at this stage, apart from sustain, pitch bend and modulation.

Hi - is there any chance of making the MIDI controller work if it's not class compliant? Perhaps with a different iOS GarageBand version or something else

How did you connect it to the speakers?. Can you please help me how to play in a live gig if I am using VST softwares like pure synth platinum 2 connecting to keyboard using my IPad.. ?
Hello. I am able to use my old MIDI keyboard as a controller to play strings, bass and piano into Garageband for iPad using the Roland UM-One MIDI cable. For some reason I can not play drum sounds from the keyboard into Garageband. Do you have any idea why? Thank you.
That’s odd? Should use the same notes. Make sure you’re in the “Drums”, and maybe try adjusting the octave to make sure you’re playing in the right area. ua-cam.com/video/RANCX1nnR6g/v-deo.html

If you have a newer device and need to monitor audio, you’ll need an audio interface or something like this. ua-cam.com/video/wpu9EOTyur4/v-deo.html
Hey there. As long as the keyboard is class compliant it will work fine. There’s a few things to consider, like power - you’ll often need to be separately powered. Take a look at this video to see what I’m talking about. ua-cam.com/video/ESmnF7jv92A/v-deo.html
Hey there my friend. Yes, this video should help. There’s a very good adapter from Roland which I demo which allows you to convert an older style DIN MIDI connection to USB. ua-cam.com/video/l-g5UEsn6Ws/v-deo.html

Hey there. Yep. Very low latency that is almost unnoticeable, and as long as you use the genuine Apple cable, the quality of the connection is very good.
Yo! Thanks for that...You sound Australian..Anyway cobber, is the Evolution MK-449 C class complaint? I am trying to connect it to my iphone on Garage Band and a Galaxy Tab A tablet on Perfect Piano and no go. Cannot see it. I'm using a female to female USB adapter/converter to connect it via USB. The adapter is new but cheap from eBay. If the adapter is not the problem, then maybe a setting I can't think of? The USB cable to the Mac works well on the desktop. Anyway if you have an idea of where I'm going wrong, please let me know. Cheers!

@@PeteJohnsMusic I managed to find an adapter on Amazon. It has three ports. One usb-c to charge the iPad. One USB-A to connect to the iPad software and a third 3.5mm audio jack that lets you plug back into your electric piano or audio speakers. Works really well.
What lighting to usb cable works? You go on to the apple website and look for the lighting to usb cable, but it has a load of comments saying that it doesn’t work. Apparently that case is to do with iOS and it is “no longer compatible with this device” I was wondering if anyone could tell me which one is optimal to buy. Btw great vid.
Hey there George. The two cables I link to and talk about in this video are the genuine Apple adapters which I have found to work 100% of the time with my iPhone 6S+ and iPad Air 2. Where some folks get in to trouble is when they try to connect things that are not “class compliant”, which won’t work. His is usually older keyboards, some higher end audio interfaces, and things like USB flash drives. ua-cam.com/video/FIAYgbKT9Us/v-deo.html
Nice one. Yes, you can get these from Amazon, Apple or other retailers. I strongly suggest the genuine Apple ones. They are more expensive but a lot more reliable.

If No, how do I connect my midi keyboard to my ipad 7th generation and still be able to monitor what I am playing over an headset. I look forward to your reply. And thanks once again for all the wonderful videos you have been taking time out to make
So can GB receive whatever sound I have in my midi keyboard? Or it will only recognize the instruments that it has as tracks? So if I set my keyboard to play let’s say a sitar, will GB receive that sound as is from the midi? Or do you have to find the sitar in GB? Let’s say GB doesn’t have a sitar (or any certain sound you have on your midi), will it record that sound?
Anyone having difficulty with connected keyboard not playing in garage band? It worked initially. I figured it out. If you have a scale selected minor, Dorian, pentatonic etc. the key board won’t work. The scale function has to be off.

Thank you. Also nice video, thank you for explaining everything
Hi there my friend. If you have a MIDI keyboard with USB, then what you will need is a Lightning to USB adapter cable.
Here’s a video which shows you how - ua-cam.com/video/LdVAG_LwjBw/v-deo.html
And here’s more information - ua-cam.com/video/FIAYgbKT9Us/v-deo.html
thank you so much, I really appreciate it
Happy to help. If you need to pick up any cables or gear you can check out my gear guide at studiolivetoday.com/gear
Pete Johns did you read that comment properly? It says he’s blind...
Hey there. Yep, I got that. Blind folks can use screen reading software to follow links and can listen to videos. It’s why I talk so much in my videos as well as demonstrate, so visually impaired folks can follow along with what I’m doing.
How do I connect my Yamaha S08 to interface with my Apple laptop? I have a USB and a midi input and output and thru ports. Please help!
Hey there. If your keyboard is MIDI you can just use a MIDI port and you’ll be connected. If it uses older 5 pin DIN connectors you’ll need something like this.

Can I use my 2017 model Casio keyboard to write drums using garageband on mac air? If so how? Thx!
If it has MIDI then yes, just connect via USB and you’re away. studiolivetoday.com
Is there are USB-C MIDI keyboard that plugs in with USB-C to USB-C without USB- C adapter for recent iPads ?
You might be able to use an adapter? But I would just recommend a USB hub. studiolivetoday.com/gear
I should have been more specific, but is there any way to use the control keys on the Axiom Pro 49, like play and record and the sliders as well?
No. There’s not with GarageBand iOS. It doesn’t support MIDI learn or any advanced features outside of sustain, pitch bend, modulation etc.
@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete. You're a great help with issues like this. I would have never figured this out except for constantly finger-banging the damned thing!
I connected my akai mpk mini thank you it works excellent 😊
Awesome!! Great to hear Dylan. 🙏
Hi Pete
My son just got a midiplus x6.
We connected to his iPad with USB cable but no sound. Do we need a driver?

Bummer! Hopefully you can get things working.
Thank you man! Love your videos, great attitude
Cheers my friend. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.
if you use the modulation wheel on the smart guitar and smart strings, the sound changes, for example the guitar sound plays like you palm mute it with your hand.
Really? I really must start consulting with you before my videos my friend.
Actually, I kind of like that you can always add something here in the comments afterwards!
Is they are Bluetooth MIDI keyboard that are CC so that we can use it without USB & the adaptors ?
I haven’t come across one but I don’t really trust Bluetooth in audio production.
Is it possible to use iOS GarageBand as a plug-in inside a DAW on my computer?
I don’t believe so. What you can do is send the output from your iOS device to the input of your DAW.
Hey there. I have found that most cheaper MIDI to USB cables don’t work well or at all. I use this Edirol/Roland model and have never had issues - ua-cam.com/video/l-g5UEsn6Ws/v-deo.html
I’ve got a keyboard today and watched this video. Literally just subscribed because I really liked this video and the man himself sounds very friendly

I've got an old Axiom Pro49. Is there any way to use it with GarageBand 2.3.15 so that the secondary functions (pads, sliders, knobs, play/record/start/rewind/fast forward, etc) will work. I'm already guessing what the answer is going to be, but hey, you're the guy to ask!
Unfortunately not. GarageBand iOS has some very basic MIDI control functions. I explain all this in this video if you’d like more info. ua-cam.com/users/liveW4MFXbxtPMg?si=2v9kaL8Gao2exeSc
I got a $49 Casio keyboard and by your guidance I have the keyboard playing thru Garage Band and sound coming out the iPAD speaker
Can I hook the iPAD directly into our bands PA or is the audio interface required?
Thank you
If your iPad has a headphone jack you can just send a stereo line out from there. An audio interface would give you more control and better quality but the headphone jack would work. You would need a splitter if you wanted to still be able to hear your audio through headphones.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you so much!
How can I connect the keyboard to a speaker for live performance
You’ll need to send the audio through a device (PC, Mac, iOS device) and then output using an audio interface or similar. studiolivetoday.com/usb
How to setup pads from akai mpk mini for garageband?
Hey there my friend. Unfortunately GarageBand iOS only supports the actual keys on a MIDI controller. I haven't found a way to get any other MIDI features to be supported at this stage, apart from sustain, pitch bend and modulation.
Hey Pete, I’ve got a Fantom X6 and an IPad Pro. I’ve set the keyboard to USB-MIDI and plugged it in to my iPad with an adaptor. It just doesn’t seem to work. Any suggestions?
Hey there. Are you using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter? This is the most common cause. ua-cam.com/video/gwNqV1W3fPU/v-deo.html
No, that might be the issue. Thank you🤙🏾
Dude....i have been so excited and so dreading getting a midi keyboard.

Watching it in 2020! Did you face any latency? I was facing some latency and delays.. how can it be resolved? Thanks 😊
Hey there my friend. I’ve never found any latency issues using the genuine Apple USB adapters and my Korg and M-Audio keyboards. Some folks have told me they have had latency but often it is caused by cheaper hardware. Thanks for watching and for your question. 👍
Pete Johns Thanks a lot for your reply! Im currently using M-audio keystation 61 mk3 with apple lightning camera adapter and connecting it to an iphone XS that plays audio via Bluetooth. Could the Bluetooth streaming be the issue? In that case as there is no aux port what else can be done? Thanks again!

Is it optional to connect it to an interface first ?
Yes. Thought it can help you with monitoring if you’re using more modern devices that have no headphone jack. studiolivetoday.com/usb
Does its sound quality better with interface or just the same with this method
Hi - is there any chance of making the MIDI controller work if it's not class compliant? Perhaps with a different iOS GarageBand version or something else
Hi there.unfortunately not. If it requires drivers to work, there’s not much that can be done. If it has older MIDI ports you might be able to get it working using a cable like this though. ua-cam.com/video/l-g5UEsn6Ws/v-deo.html
Hi Pete! I tried to find a video in your video list about how connect a midi piano to an audio interface to iPhone or iPad. Maybe you can put a link if you have that video. Thank you for sharing.

How did you connect it to the speakers?. Can you please help me how to play in a live gig if I am using VST softwares like pure synth platinum 2 connecting to keyboard using my IPad.. ?
VSTs are not compatible with iOS. You would need a PC. You can use an audio interface to send your iPad audio out and use AUv3 plugins however.

In GarageBand iOS, unfortunately there's no way to control volume using a MIDI controller. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
If I connect my Roland A-49 via usb to my iPad Pro , will it work ? Or do i need some others drivers or something ?
Hey there. As long as the keyboard is class compliant it will work fine. There’s a few things to consider, like power - you’ll often need to be separately powered. Take a look at this video to see what I’m talking about. ua-cam.com/video/ESmnF7jv92A/v-deo.html

Hey there. Yep. Very low latency that is almost unnoticeable, and as long as you use the genuine Apple cable, the quality of the connection is very good.
Hi everyone, is possible to convert audio to midi into Garageband? Thanks!
Hi there. Unfortunately not. You can try apps like MIDI Guitar 2 which do similar things to this, but GarageBand doesn’t support it unfortunately.
I wish mine just worked when I plugged it in like this video. It did once. Won't do it again. M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61.
Oh really? Maybe check that you have a high quality cable?
What lighting to usb cable works?
You go on to the apple website and look for the lighting to usb cable, but it has a load of comments saying that it doesn’t work. Apparently that case is to do with iOS and it is “no longer compatible with this device”
I was wondering if anyone could tell me which one is optimal to buy.
