At first I thought that wow getting rid of 3 items to get a new one sounds hard but it actually is a great tool to evaluate your purchases. Especially when buying clothes that accumulate easily. Great job!
I tried the thing with my clothes, but I only got rid of two items for every one. It helped. Plus the person I am donating to is a single mom my size and she loves my clothes anyway. We both win.
This experiment is actually really interesting, and it actually got me to think about all of the useless stuff that I have lying around. I don't think I want to be a minimalist, but it is definitely good to get rid of junk and useless stuff if you know you aren't going to use it.
a tip for having few clothes (from a person who is definitely not a minimalist): you can keep your clothing simpler and invest in a few key accessories and shoes, so you can have interesting and different outfits without having as many clothes. i can give the same outfit new life just by changing my shoes or putting on a belt or a hat, and they occupy a lot less space than clothes and last a lot longer because they suffer less wear and tear. i have 2 scarves that i've had for over 10 years and they're still as good as new. it may seem contradictory to have more things in order to have less things, but having 1 or 2 items on various categories ends up being less than having 20 or 30 different shirts for example. i have 1 hat, 1 belt, 2 scarves and 2 bags, and those 6 items alone do more than if i had twice as much in clothes.
When it comes to buying new things, I think minimalists (at least I do) have the tendency to put off buying things... but when the point comes that we actually need to buy those items and we can't hold out anymore, it feels like we end up buying a lot. I did not purchase anything new for my wardrobe for almost a year (and I wear my clothing on heavy rotation) so when the time came to replace items it felt like I was buying a lot... but really I was simply replacing the things that I needed to replace... just all in one go. Basically, buying what feels like a lot is sometimes normal and even necessary.
I agree. I was living in Germany (from the US) and only brought 2 pairs of pants, 2 shorts, and a dress for bottoms. My jeans were falling apart despite me sewing them as much as possible. I finally bought a new pair when I returned because they were no longer in good enough condition for me to wear them to work. I had to buy a second pair as well to wear when my others were being washed and new shoes since mine were so worn down from walking everywhere. It ended up being an expensive shopping trip but it was the only clothing I had bought in 9 months for myself
I went to Japan 3 years ago and I still can't forget any experience I made. I went to a tea house in Kyoto and they offered a tea ceremony. I participated and the minimalistic tea house, the art of serving your tea, preparing it's temperature, tasting the "umami" and eating this tiny small mochi... And the only "decoration" they had was the furniture. I really love that country, the people, the cuisine and the culture. I will definitely visit Japan thousand times until I die.
I took your last videos advice of "if you don't have a blanket you can use a kimono" to heart and while I don't have a kimono I used my coat as an extra blanket when the weather recently got extremely cold and my heating had issues. Just as good as a blanket if not even better. Also used my bath robe as an extra blanket and I already wear it as a house coat during the colder months anyway. Cuddling up with the cats has also helped. Definitely a good idea to spend your money on some really important things and for the rest you can make your stuff work.
I really do want to become a minimalist and you're the first person to introduce me to it. I decluttered so much from my room, and ended up throwing away a large bag of clothes to donate, and some small things, but thanks to you, I feel more comfortable and I prefer this lifestyle over anything especially if there are nice wall and floor colors like your room. Once when I move out of my parents house I want to be an extreme minimalist just like you. Thank you for helping find this lifestyle and helping me follow one of my culture easily and daily which is enviromental cleanliness (arabic culture BTW) P.s you look great with a beard
I like the idea of getting rid of 3 things with every purchase made. I think I will do that starting today. I try not to buy too much miscellaneous items except for things that I know I'll be using for a very long time. I'm not a minimalist because I'm a sentimental person but I think I'll start to get rid of things I don't think I need or have not used for more than a month with the same number of items I have purchased. Awesome video!😁👍
Wait if this is a weekly thing I’m so in! These videos are so relaxing. Thoughtful and chill at the same time AND we get to see you casually living in rural Japan. It’s so great. subscribed. ps It’s great idea to show us snippets of living in Japan normally whilst being a minimalist.
I like your style dude! Even tho it’s minimal, it’s not boring or ugly haha, still looks great and probably feels great too. This really shows that just because you’re minimalist, doesn’t mean you need to be uncomfortable or bland
Thank you for the inspirational video! In north east United States we used to have a saying; ”Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” That is where I learned to make the things I needed and to repair things when they broke.
I had heard of the traveler’s rule of for every incoming item one must leave, an even swap, but the 1:3 ratio really makes one think on the value of adding a new item. Thanks for these first 2 videos on this concept.
I love your approach to a minimalist wardrobe. I have always found the all-black wardrobe to be boring too, and struggled to balance my ideas about minimalism and my wardrobe. I really love your approach and will seek to implement it this spring when I refresh my wardrobe.
Just a thought - if you are going to switch from tap water to natural spring water, you really need to be filling directly from the spring with large glass jugs. Any thing less will just contaminate the water with plastic, chemicals and things you are trying to avoid :) Thanks for another great video!
was making ramen and chai tea when I saw the first vid. Spent the last two hours cleaning. Only cleaned about 1/10th of my apartment. Studio apartment o.o This series is helping keep me motivated man!
How awesome! I can't believe you've continued this (brave or crazy), but I'm so excited to see how you get on with it for a year. We're in the UK and Christmas is around the corner. I think I'll take your advice as Christmas is a time of excess. So for every one present we get (that's me, my husband and two kids!), I will donate three things. Thanks for another inspirational video! 頑張ってください!
i've grown up in a hoarder home and still struggle with messy, hoarding tendencies- so a true minimalist challenge seems way out of reach for me. but the idea of throwing away 3 things every time i buy 1 feels like not only something that's reasonable for anyone, but a good incentive to think about purchases AND declutter my space!
This concept is really brilliant. I feel less cluttered and stress free just watching your videos. Your lifestyle is very pleasant and uncomplicated...love it!
BTW, ur English is really above most Japanese🙏🏽🥰👍🏽 Also the automatic electricity and water supplies in the house (not for drinking which u replaced with spring water), and perhaps heating (if any) for winter. They should also be counted. It was not intentional, but I started with nothing like a homeless in frozen winter. I had less than 1 day to think what I could bring (that can be carried manually) and then off to the street. Here’s the sequence: first thing was clothings to keep you from frozen to death (if not u die in hours). Then it’s somewhere warm and safe for you to rest & stay safe from the elements (if not u cannot function with prolonged lack of rest outdoor). Then u’ll have to deal with water source (drinking water must be fetched within days, washing water was ok to handle later coz it was winter😅) before figuring out your food source (it’s interwoven with your chosen “home” location coz it has to be close to food & energy source). No, mobile lifestyle was only romantic to share online, but waste so much of your energy and nerves so a stable “home” was the only practical option especially when u have to carry everything that keeps you alive for extended period of time. Coz it was winter, after securing the “home”, water & food source, energy source was the next most important thing. The first moment of drinking hot water was such a blessing! Guess similar is to your mattress.😉 Then again coz it was winter, there was a period of time that slowly improve on food related items until (at least) a basically health diet can be maintained. Due to the unsecured feeling of unknown future moves, things are kept to the minimum in case of changing location. Yet I did get a French press & hand held grinder for a bit of zest in life (probably feeling like your macha set)😉. Of course some basic necessities are already in the camping bag the first moment I hit the street. Phone, tablet for work & other stuffs based on usual day bag small items (eg: toothbrush, hand sanitizer & lip balm etc). Now that experience is over, but I am grateful I had that. Possibly similar to how u feel after these two rounds of 30 days experiment.🙏🏽🥰 I wish more people can really go through similar experience on top of just watching others. The internal impact cannot be fully shared I suppose. Anyways, thanks for sharing your experience & love your bamboo bike & location with spring water nearby!🙏🏽🥰
This serious of yours hasn't inspired me to become a minimalist myself. However, I have been inspired to reduce the amount of soap I use and try and be more environmentally conscious.
I only buy one type of sock. They are all the same. So if one goes bad or the dryer eats it. I'm not left with an odd sock. Plus when choosing them there is no need to match them into pairs.
Hi Aki! Great video! I want to become a minimalist, too. But getting rid of stuff is not so easy. I feel like throwing away things is wasteful even if i don't use them. It's always a dilemma for me. Well, i just have to do it, i guess. Good luck with your future videos!
I stumbled across this video and will be off to university soon so it helps me take into perspective what I should be taking with me when I move to continue studying. Amazing challenge and great advice!!
I love your channel for your practical (and funny) approach to minimalism. As it's personal, this process will never be perfect... and there will be no lack of lessons and laughter 🤣. Continue on this journey. Greetings from a new subscriber from Brazil 🤗
For me, I would like to get the absolute basic necessities to eat, bathe, sleep, and then clothe myself for one day on day1, preferably on a weekend. Day2 can be where we really start to challenge ourselves and ask what we want next. I like that the set for the tea ceremony counted as only one day. I would probably adopt this idea of 1activity = 1day and shorten the length of the challenge to be able to apply this to the other days. Like maybe Day2, I would choose laundry essentials. Day3 another set of clothes, this would be for work since it would be a weekday by now. Then so on, until maybe a 14-day/14-activity challenge ends it? As someone novice to minimalism, Aki's stricter method with the day1 deprivation is so admirable.🙌 I probably couldn't bear doing this challenge until maybe day15 where I'd only have the clothes on my back and a carry-on backpack empty of other clothes, but somewhat completed by the other travel essentials. My application of minimalism can best be depicted in one bag travel, so that's where I'd have to start after day1 clothes.😂
I agree with having at least a set of clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! They always come in handy in moments we need them most. Glad you didn’t have to wear a business suit to play sports😂 Another wonderful and informative video!👏
Not intentionally, I still don’t have washing machine. Yet your advice on magnesium is super helpful. Thanks for sharing🙏🏽🥰 yet u do need so many more things when it’s cold.
こんにちは. About the color of clothes. I watched a video of the streets of Shangai the other day. That was filmed in summertime. People were wearing all sort of different clothes: shorts, jeans, tshirt with words or graphics and with very various colors ( red yellow green etc. ). They look like poeple here in Montreal in symmertime. Very relax. Then I watched a video of the streets of Tokoy and I was amazed: people were all very elegant, women often in dresses but with very few color, mainly black, gray, white, beige. No short, ( exept for westeners) few blue jeans, very sober, very minimalist. The uniformity was nice to see and at the same time a little oppressing after a while. No fantasy, no individuality that stands out. Althoug japanese people wear ''western'' clothes, they do it in a way that is so unique to their nation that you can see the original culture reappears. I really like it. What do you think? Chris.
My Mum always made us get rid of something when getting something new, something in something out she used to say and we would donate (when possible) whatever it was we got rid of.
I love your explanations and insight. I have started using tenugui in place of ‘western’ towels after your suggestion. I will think about the +1 -3 idea, I don’t know if I can do it but I do have too much stuff!
These videos made me want to start using tengui, but I didn’t since I already have a lot of towels and rags and replacing them with tengui would just mean they end up in a landfill. It’s something I can keep in mind if I ever have to start over though.
this is amazing! i could never be a minimalist bc i like stuff LOL i need comfy things but i am always trying to declutter and pare down my stuff. i would say i am a minimal maximalist LOL
Although you and me live very different lives (I love stuff haha especially technology and tend to own a lot of things in that regard) I do enjoy your content still and it makes me feel at ease. I don't need everything I own but I appreciate them and keep them safe as memories of my past and as things I enjoy. Do I need a PlayStation 2? No but I will still keep it as it played a big part in my life when I was young and on occasion I can enjoy playing it again.
Dear bro..i found ur vlogs are so nice and enlightening...I love to watch again and again...can U mk vlog on travelling kits and camping out side...may god bless u.
What kind of shaver do you use? What other personal products, such as toiletries do you prefer using as a minimalist? Minimalism minimizes trash as well.
Dang, 1 deodorant cost you a Macbook, charger and stand! I really like your style of videos and the way you narrate so honestly. Keep up the good work, Matcha!
I just love your videos! I also do this if I buy something new I get rid of one thing . But I like the three items idea even better! Can’t wait for your next video ❤️
I love all your videos I want to minimize to your extreme ! I have two older teens and would like to incorporate some warmth for there sake , want to see some videos soon 😅 also your encourage me to wear a Kimodo as soon as I can get one , I’m getting one 😀
Japan and minimalism: things that I love that are even better together !
Thank you so much!! I'll give it my best shot;-D
At first I thought that wow getting rid of 3 items to get a new one sounds hard but it actually is a great tool to evaluate your purchases. Especially when buying clothes that accumulate easily. Great job!
Yes, I learned how easily clothes accumulate in this challenge! Thanks as usual;-D
1 in 3 out is a great method even if you not not this sort of extreme challenge.

Another really interesting and fun video! I loved the idea of a whole year challenge. It would be amazing to see it. Thanks again ♥️
Thanks so much!!! I'll give it a try!!
I really like watching your videos. Great you did the challenge again. I really hope your channel will continue growing :)
Thanks;-D I'm not so perfect minimalist, but I'll give it my best shot!
your videos inspire me
I love your explanations and insight. I have started using tenugui in place of ‘western’ towels after your suggestion. I will think about the +1 -3 idea, I don’t know if I can do it but I do have too much stuff!
Yes! Tenugui is great!!
These videos made me want to start using tengui, but I didn’t since I already have a lot of towels and rags and replacing them with tengui would just mean they end up in a landfill. It’s something I can keep in mind if I ever have to start over though.
Muito bom! É um desafio difícil, mas ele faz parecer divertido!
this is amazing! i could never be a minimalist bc i like stuff LOL i need comfy things but i am always trying to declutter and pare down my stuff. i would say i am a minimal maximalist LOL
I really loved the first video just as well as the second one. Your videos are amazingly entertaining and helpfull at the same time.
Dude, thank you for introducing the magnesium balls. Never knew they existed. I already convinced my mom to try it
Magnesium is great! Yeah, you can try!
Thanks!!!
Just discovered your channel, I really find your personality fun and entertaining! Hope you have a good day :)
Thank you so much;-D you too!

What kind of shaver do you use? What other personal products, such as toiletries do you prefer using as a minimalist? Minimalism minimizes trash as well.

That woven box to lift ur monitor is a genius idea
Dang, 1 deodorant cost you a Macbook, charger and stand!
I really like your style of videos and the way you narrate so honestly.
Keep up the good work, Matcha!
What a simple life 🌈

I just love your videos! I also do this if I buy something new I get rid of one thing . But I like the three items idea even better! Can’t wait for your next video ❤️

Oooh it's a *continuation* of the last video!
Doing a year of this challenge is probably going to be difficult! Good luck and enjoy it!
