  • Metrobolist was the original title of the Man Who Sold The World LP (Nov. 1970), until the label (Mercury) changed it and used the cartoon cover art without Bowie's consent. The band on the LP, provisionally called The Hype, was basically the Spiders from Mars with producer Tony Visconti on bass. When the band played a short tour in 1970, Angie dressed them up in gaudy, glitter-encrusted superhero costumes, a move that some say originated Glam Rock. The Hype live set included songs from the MWSTW LP, including this track (featuring blistering guitar work from Mick Ronson), which became the centerpiece of the Ziggy Stardust shows, and remained in Bowie's live set until the end of the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974.

This came out when I was in the 9th grade. I can't describe how unique and powerful it was to me. Supposedly this is the band being influenced by Cream. The band would jam and when they had a song they'd call Bowie in. Hed write lyrics and record them over the music tracks.

What a time to be alive. I love looking at my grandparent’s photos from those days. Miss Bowie. He can do a great deal of inspiration for young musicians today

Amazing guitar work. Would it be to bold to suggest the lyrics were “Acid generated? Where did song writers in those days come up with that stuff....if not drugs? Still amazing to take musicians on that set, seeming to be separately doing their own thing, yet, it all comes together like a bizarre, but coherent Symphony.
David and his associate musicians simply cannot be underestimated. Masterful craftsmanship was happening...
    Miss him so much.....

    Been funnier if he'd said
    He swallowed his lips
    Then puckered his pride......
Thank you so much for the lyrics, I love singing along
He can be so challenging to follow.......well, that could just be me!!

Good remaster. The 2015 nearly socks your head off with the bass guitar. Both are great, in general, of course. Always liked this track. Love Ronno's ecstatic take on Beck and Clapton licks, channeled through his wah and Solasound, throwing in his own extra punch and guitar sound effects as well. Also sounds distance miked. Thanks for posting this.

Good album...but I don't believe it was originally METROBOLIST for a second. I've read every BOWIE book and article I could find since '73....never heard it mentioned.
    Just another money grab.

According to Wikipedia (I know) this indeed was the original title that was changed at the last minute, but I have to agree, it’s just an excuse for Tony V to remix it (and turn up the bass!)

@@ThePhudD well, I have to be meaner than that....it was purely to sell.another album, after Bowie's death. Bowie had a vast amount of books and magazines about him, and being a Bowie fanatic, I read more than my fair share...in 50 years I never saw any reference.... anywhere to METROBOLIST... certainly Bowie.would have said so, particularly in the early years....we all know how he "sold" himself to the public. Any mention of METROBOLIST In Wikipedia, is almost certainly an added addendum.

And what exactly is a "Metrobolist" anyway?

There has only ever been one rocker better than Bowie in the history of rock and roll. And that is Chris De Burgh.
