  • Few people go without shoes in the 18th century. Join me and listen to our discussion with shoe makers Rob Welch and Shaun Pekar about different types of footwear from shoes to boots, how they were made, and tracing the history of mens shoes through the 18th century.

I’ve been doing some research into Deborah Samson, and she specified that she was issued “half boots” as a member of the Light Infantry company of the 4th Massachusetts regiment. She also wore gaiter trousers, or overalls, instead of breeches. I thought that was interesting.

I always thought that someone on the frontier with basic footwear knowledge/training would have made a bark tanned leather shoe with a stitch- down or turn shoe construction instead of moccasins Many womans shoes were made that way.
