Do you have to pay for parking tickets issued by private lots?

- We've all been there. An appointment runs late or you enter your licence plate wrong and you return to your car to find a ticket under your wiper blade. Someone in your social circle may advise ignoring the ticket. But what happens if you do? And how much power do private parking companies have to make you pay?

Received a ticket in whistler, moved to Ontario and changed plate and never paid Whistler. It was a private lot.
ok you didn't have to do all that
@JaneNayes I was relocating, I didn't relocate to avoid it, that would be dumb.
@@diablo416 I think she was joking lmao
That main lot is private...i nevver pay there outrageous prices.
Watch out we got a badass over here
You do NOT have to pay a ticket issued by a private parking lot. They will threaten you with going to court which they won't do because the cost of taking you to court is usually more than the ticket. Private parking lot tickets do NOT affect your credit rating at all. The only power private lots have is to tow your vehicle from their lot if you owe them money. DO NOT PAY PRIVATE PARKING LOT TICKETS !
Pay fairly priced ones if you actually do go over the time. But those are so rare, you better be posting it all over social media so the rest of us can find it.
If we owe them money, do they have the power to tow our vehicle parked on our private property (e.g. our home)? Or they can only tow when just happen we park our vehicle on their property again?
@@tonychan1205 They can only tow your vehicle if it is parked on one of their lots. They can not tow your vehicle from public streets or your home. Their options are very limited. That's why they do their best to threaten you with legal action or affecting your credit rating. They know that legally you don't have to pay them and taking you to court is not profitable.
It is like getting a yellow card in soccer. A chastisement with no consequence.
@@paulstafford4784I used to park at an impark lot for work. Always had issues with tickets not coming out of machine, not getting a ticket etc. I would call the number to advise what happened, they would promise not to ticket and I would come out to a ticket.
I started getting harassed by them calling me..one rep literally threatened to beat me ip lol. Never paid any of my tickets and never got towed. Have never even heard of anyone getting towed from an impark lot before in Saskatchewan…
Heh, one time I parked and took 6 footsteps to a machine, paid the toll for 2 hours, only to come back out to a $70 ticket because it turns out the giant lot I was in had been sub divided between Diamond and IMPark. That's when I stopped being a law abiding citizen and refused to pay ..... at some point the fine grew over $200, and then one day they just stopped :)
Nice! Have you heard anything else about it since?
In 2016 I got a $60.00 parking ticket that went up to $100.00 after 7 days. They called me a bunch of times in 2018 telling me to pay. Never did. They sent me a notice in the mail saying they would take legal action if I didn’t pay. Still didn’t pay and nothing ever came of it.
All they have is FEAR THAT'S IT
Probably they have a faulty machine and they don't want to take legal action.
If you are not welling to pay you should not park there in the first place. If you will do what ever you can get a way with it, that will imply serious results
this was a parking lot that I parked in many times in my neighbourhood. I was having drinks at the pub in the same parking lot and left my vehicle there overnight as not to drive home. Sometime between that time and the last time I was there they made the parking lot a paid lot and I was unaware of this hence the ticket. These third party ticket givers hand out stupidly expensive tickets that make you laugh more than anything. It's a legal criminal enterprise.@@Ryzen7-x9h

Ones some guy parked on my driveway in the morning. I blocked his car with mine and left. In the evening he didn't say sorry and requested to unblock. I asked him to leave my property. He called police, they came and charged him for trespassing.
Interesting. Trespassing charge and I have to agree. was after all on your driveway. So, just out of curiosity. What would the charge have been if he parked on the street blocking your driveway?
@@robinhooper7702 No idea. I guess his car would be towed.

Awesome strategy! I should have done this when it happened to me.
No you do not have to pay tickets from a private lot BUT do not park there again without paying or you could get towed.
I paid for 12 hr parking in Edmonton before and the ticket printed came out as only good for an hour. I left and came back a couple hours later and got a ticket for it.
I tried to get ahold of the company but all their website options were all about how to pay and nothing about contacting for discrepancies. It was clear what the only goal of this company was.
So, given that, I just didnt ever pay and made sure to not use their parking lot again.
Name the parking lot or al least mention the closest intersection. This will help people not use that lot in the future.
You know I had the same problem back in November when I attended a concert at Rogers Place.
I paid for 12 hour parking at the City Centre Mall. I do believe it was with Indigo Neo Parking. I was surprised that even paying for 12 hours I received a $80 ticket.
I was able to email them and verify that parking was paid in the area where I parked. Ticket was waived but I’m just unsure in the future how to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
@@pinchasr That is rediculous! I don't think you spent 12 hours for the concert.

When I was in BC (lower mainland), the tickets were $75-80 depending on where you parked and got ticketed. Getting your license plate changed was $18 with ICBC. So, do the math.
The ticket is against the owner not the vehicle. If it is true ICBC collects unpaid fees, the math is your fee + your unpaid tickets.

Diamond in Vancouver fined me for a ticket when I paid and was not expired on time. I had proof of this and submitted it. They still sent me threatening letters and collection notices. But I never replied. They stopped after 7 months.
I am still being chased for payment for parking at a Diamond lot without paying for 2 minutes while i went in to buy a pizza. The pizza place was on the same property as the parking lot. I simply ignore the calls when they come.

Ripoff rates from downtown private parking lots.... yet another reason why letting office workers work remotely is better for everyone... except, I guess, the people who own downtown private parking lots.

@@toolbaggershow about no, stop spamming about increasing parking cost.
@@toolbaggerspeople won't use public transit if it's not good or reliable. Biggest problem in Canada related to public transit is that we keep trying to make it more expensive for people to drive, yet don't really improve the infrastructure. Surface parking continues to be a blight on our cities anyway. Either make garages accessible in downtown cores in partnership with the city or continue to deal with some of these extortionate rates. (Not that municipal lots will cost less, but they'll at least fund the city instead of some vampiric lot corporation.)
Why should the City use public funds to subsidize your parking?
@@cw9282 Precisely. Build the lots, charge what would be favourable to normal property tax rates. Cut out the middleman and make more cash for the city.
@@cw9282they're the ones who took parking space and built on it. The government serves you. You don't serve them.
@@buysncharge These are private lots and Impark is a private company. The title of the video is literally "parking tickets issued by private lots". So again, why should the government subsidize these parking fees? It's a free market. And if you don't want to pay it, you have other options to reduce or eliminate the fee - carpooling, biking, public transit, or find another job. You shouldn't appropriate other people's tax money to pay for your parking.
@@cw9282 I don't. I just pay to park or have a guy who cleans my tickets.
In a city like Vancouver, where I live, just take transit as there's a ton of transit in Vancouver. You don't have to pay for parking which can save you $10 for a 3-hour visit to a place.
In 2013 there was a ruling in supreme court of canada that private companies cant report to your credit bureau. All collections notices for PRIVATE parking can be ignored. Just dont get enough that you get towed or just change youre plate number.
Depends on jurisdiction too. In Ontario private property owners can get provincial authority to issue tickets.
Indeed. Toronto Police Parking Enforcement hands out unauthorized parking tickets in some private lots.
I parked in a private lot back in 2022 when i had gone to give an exam. After i came out the machine wouldnt accept any cards (i tried 3). I went and complained to the guys but none of them seemed to know what to do. After almost 30 mins i gave up and left.
I got a ticket asking me to pay 120$. The original charge was 12$..
I received a call from a collection agency in a few days demanding me to pay. I told them clearly ill pay 12$ which i rightfully owe. They tried to persuade me by brining it down to 40$ (as if they were doing me a huge favour). I didnt budge.
They called me thrice and my response was the same always. Ill pay u 12$ which i rightfully owe..not a penny more.
They stopped calling.
I’ve had machines argue with my cards lots, and ended up just not paying several times. The only ticket I ever had was one time my card worked, and in the 15 minutes between my parking expiring and me coming back to my car I had a ticket. I never paid, and never heard anything about it since.
What CBC is saying is that on any PRIVATE lot you pay for ONE hour or the daily minimum (if you're going all day or most of the day). Then when your paid hour expires you may or my not receive a ticket. Regardless of whether you do or not, you continue to park and pay for ONE hour or daily minimum each day that you're there. Your tickets will add up over time but you will not be towed as long as you continue to pay for one hour. You're paying, but you're ticket expires. If you vehicle does get towed, you ONLY PAY the towing company which is FAR LESS than your accumulated tickets
You can also bike, walk and take transit downtown and you don't have to pay anything for parking!
Cars are parked for 95% of their lives. A vehicle is the only privately owned piece of property that you can literally leave on the street, in most cases for free, if not for heavily subsidized rates. Just pay for it and accept you're getting a great deal. Everyone who doesn't drive is heavily subsidizing the enormous amount of space in cities you're devouring.
You can also stop criticizing people for driving when you know absolutely nothing about their situation. Some people are physically unable to walk long distances or take transit and a car is the only option for them to get around. Some people drive a car because transit is dangerous and they don't want to be in that environment. Some people have businesses that require vehicles in order to operate. Some people have several vehicles and enjoy driving like myself because they worked hard for them.
I don't care if they are parked all the time and I don't care if you are upset about subsidizing the infrastructure required for them. We all know you really don't subsidize anything because you don't make any money or pay any taxes. Not being able to take a vehicle and drive where ever I want when ever I want is not a life I want to be living. That is not freedom at all. You tell everyone how great it is not having a car and how bad it is to own one but in reality you are just making excuses for failing at life.
You can do whatever you want but please keep that condescending attitude to yourself. Not everyone wants to give up their freedom and "Do right by the environment" because most of us didn't have our opinions programmed into us by the educations system and the media. If you have been around for a while and lived life for more than a couple of decades you would realize that you are not saving a thing and are giving up virtually everything.
@@markadler8968Talking about condescension. His post was mostly factual. Yours comprises ad hominem, among other sophisms.

Move to vancouver , there is no going to court . I haven't paid any parking tickets here since the 1960's . They hand the collection over to a collection agency but I don't pay them either . The same goes for the 2 tickets I got in last 60 years from private lots .
Got a ticket years ago for parking over a line in a private lot, never payed it...
I had some collections call me to collect several tickets told him I'm not paying them said they would sue me lol told him go ahead never heard from them again
They can't make you pay the parking ticket, but if you have outstanding unpaid tickets they can tow your car and have it impounded if you park again without paying.
Cheaper to pay the ticket than the tow bill.
basically if the fee is more then the cost of legally perusing said fee, most companies in my experience wont bother.
It is an interesting sign of our postmodernist times that the discussion has boiled down to the various penalties and possible enforcements, rather than what might have in the past been a moral discussion around trespassing. Because ultimately, when you park on a private lot without paying, that's what you are doing. It is no different in principle than a stranger coming into your house and sleeping on the couch for the night without permission. Or perhaps a neighbor is having a party, but there isn't enough parking on the street, so the guests park in your driveway, or maybe on your lawn. When you think about it in personal terms like that, it clarifies the issue a little.
I was also surprised to see no one has mentioned how it is morally wrong to park without paying. It is truly eat or be eaten out there.
sure that's a fair comparison, the same way that telling your wife she hasn't aged a day is the same in principle as lying to police to help a pedophile escape.
I understand giving private tickets for private lots but they should be the same price and follow the same standards as a city ticket. If the city charges $30 the private company shouldn't be allowed tocharge $60 which many of them do. Make it consistent and people will be more amenable
@@Dutduttyd It's a tricky business deciding what private businesses "should" charge for things. But regardless, no one is being forced to park there.
It is VERY different in principle than parking in someone's driveway, stop treating these corporations as people, if you can afford an entire parking lot for your business it's not gonna hurt if someone parks there a few hours
I have never paid and impark ticket/diamond parking ticket. However, I'm at a Point where if I get towed I'll most likely have to pay what ever amount I owe which is hundreds of dollars. They sent my a letter stating this. So I just make sure I pay for parking at all costs.

Umm, i dont believe thats how it works. They can tow you and make you pay that days fine but I doubt they can blackmail you as they have to get a court decision agreeing their perceived bill is a debt and now a court order.
Next time you register your vehicle tell them that you want a new license plate this will reset all of your tickets since they use license plate number for tracking
@@satbobsmith7261 that's actually illegal...at least in BC it is.
There are some places in Halifax where it is cheaper to receive a parking ticket than to pay for a day of private parking
Universities should have free parking for students tbh. They barely have money for gas.
University of Montreal has a massive multilevel parking that costs 800$ per trimester... over 3/4 of it is empty.
They should take the bus if they can't afford to drive.
Universities should work with the city they're located in to ensure that safe, reliable, efficient public transit is available throughout the territory that the wide majority of their students live in. And, if not already the case, ensure students get discounts on fares (or, ideally, free access to public transit). That's 100 times smarter than providing free parking to students.
@@Karine_Dufresne I studied at Poly, and I have met someone who "drove" to school only once. "Drove" because she drove a motorcycle, not a car. Proximity of public transit made it so it was pretty pointless to drive to your classes.

There was a time period in Toronto when a parking ticket was $5.00 but a parking lot fee was $20.00. We always parked where there was a "chance" of parking enforcement ticketing our vehicles. I say we because a group of us worked for a service company doing field service using our own vehicles. It took the City of Toronto a year to realize their mistake in charging too little for parking tickets.
Worked security in Cobourg at the hospital and we stopped giving out tickets due to it being private parking and we really had no power.

She got lucky. ICBC will usually refuse to insure you if you have not paid a government issued parking ticket from any level of government. I knew a guy in London (England) who used to drive to the pub and parked in a private lot beside the pub. They were very aggressive about towing. However, the cost of a taxi home was less than the cost of parking and getting his car back. Getting towed seemed like a good deal as his flat was right beside the lot they towed it to. So, if you are the type of person who doesn’t pay, I would logically assume you also shop lift. You are stealing either way. Private parking lots should post a sign showing clearly the amount it will cost you to get your car back. Say, 300 bucks. That should do it.

There needs to be less metered private #parking and more gated #parking, at least at low clearance (at least at every entrance and exit) fully covered facilities. Unless it is an above ground structure with open top, surface lot, or where not every gate is placed in a way where flying cars cannot bypass gated pay system, I see meters in such fully covered low clearance facilities is more of scam compared to gates. There are gate systems outside of #Canada that are ticketless in various ways such as front license plates (great for any payment method including cash, and for any vehicle of any length towing any number (including 0) of trailers of any length) and cashless payment methods (e.g. transit cards, credit cards, debit cards, third-party E-money cards, bar/matrix code apps, etc.).
No you don't. I recycle it. I used to work for towing company and most tows are illegal. They need permission to tow in writing from you to be able to legally tow your vehicle. Nobody does this even that is required by city.
If your vehicle gets towed inspect it. Especially front control arms. Most cars are towed that way even that it can damage it. Look for scratches under front and rear bumper. If flat bed is used and steps skipped that's usually where you get damage.
If it's 4wd there is a good chance 4wd system will have damage as cars are dragged out from the spots.
Tow company should be taking pictures before and after tow and they're responsible for all damages.
Uhm.......... They need permission from whom before towing a vehicle? Like, everything you said is wrong.
In Alberta (where this video was filmed), the property owner can have any vehicle towed from private property, for any reason. I know this, because I have had vehicles towed AND have had to go to court. HOWEVER, Impark/Vinci/Diamond/Others do NOT have the ability to enforce their parking fines. The WORST they can do is tow you, and you'll get a ticket from the city for said tow (which is like $40 if you get your car back within the day) and the bill for the towing itself. Thats it. Municipal parking enforcement cannot require you to make full payment on fines owed to private corporations. So, you pay the ticket and the tow bill, and go on your merry way. NOW, what they can do is ban you from ALL of their properties, which would mean that you would be subject to arrest for violating a no-trespass order, should you enter their property. That is the extreme end. Thats about where it ends. That is the basic limit of what they can do.
NOW, regarding towing. Yes, most are dragged by the front control arms if they happen to be in a parking area where a 'normal' tow truck cannot get to them. Guess what Sugarbear, if you park unlawfully then any damage that results from being towed is solely on you. Further, even if there are scratches, YOU have the obligation to prove that they are not preexisting to being towed; and with respect, that is an almost impossible standard when it comes to scratching underneath and low down on vehicles.
Now, as far as tow companies taking pictures, I know for a fact that both Calgary Parking AND Citywide Towing both photograph existing damage and vehicle condition prior to towing, because I have literally watched them do it so often I lost count.
Anyways, thanks for playin, Chief. Better luck next time.
LOL good luck trying to get money off of a tow truck company for damaging your vehicle. Even if you take before and after pictures of your own car after you park. Time and legal fees don't make sense unless there's big time damage and you also have proof.
@@Blue84Stanghey do you know if town of canmore allowed to tow the cars and issue the tickets? Ticket says if it is not paid it goes to court but they town of canmore has a separate department where you can dispute the ticket most of the time they dismiss but the thing is how legal for them to ticket the car?
The cost of private parking is outrageous, they have no legal basis. Screw them .
The only thing with private lots is that some cities allow them to register under a program to have power to give city parking tickets. City of Ottawa has a program like that.
Come to Quebec where the private companies tow your car and hold it for ransom until you pay.
The media will say it's illegal and to talk to the police, but when you do they don't care.
Give the private parking rep a ticket for wearing/not wearing a hat. Equally valid and equally enforceable.
Yes

I understand how a municipality might have an agreement with the registrar of motor vehicles to pull your provincial registation info from a lisence plate - but I would be surprised if private lots can access that. I would actually be upset if the government released that info to a nongovernmental agent.
Wilfully not paying a private parking lot owner? Is that not similar to theft of goods and services ?
about 50% of private parking company revenue is from the issuance of tickets. There is no authority to issue a ticket for a higher amount than the parking cost. There is a contract attached to the stub you get at the machine nobody looks at that claims entitlement, but a penalty for non-payment is not an enforceable term of a contract. They try to call it a pre-assessed liquidated damages clause, but their damages are the cost of the parking only. Ignore them and they never pursue it. Your non-compliance is built into their business model, as plenty of people do pay the tickets.
I have have collected literally several hundred unpaid private parking tickets over the years, and I've never paid one. They all go away. I do generally pay for parking, but if my time runs over and I get a ticket, I don't sweat it if they ticket me.
If it's public, you pay it - If it's private and you regularly return (gym, university), you pay it. Otherwise, it has been my experience that you can push it to the court summons and the parking companies will leave it after that. They aren't interested in prosecuting you, they just want you to cough up some $$$ before "things get escalated" which they never do. As explained here, it can't and won't affect your credit until you receive judgement, which will likely never come.
No
It is cheaper to change the license plate
You don't have to pay for any tickets issued by a private lot because there are no consequences. I have gotten several tickets from private lots and have never paid one of them. They have tried sending the tickets to collection agencies which call me until I block them. This has had no impact on my credit, I know because I have a credit monitoring service.
I dont mind paying for parking. But the prices per time period is like extortion. If i paid an hour for parking and it took me 10 minutes for my appointment there should be an option to return my money. But if i paid for 10 minutes and my appointment took an hour than i get a ticket of 200 dollars but no option to try and pay more. This is ridiculous.
Is there an industry that could be established to lend people money for parking...?
