NASA Astronaut Karen Nyberg Invites Quilters to Create a Space Square

- NASA Astronaut Karen Nyberg, a lifelong lover of sewing, is inviting fellow crafters to join her in stitching together a global community space quilt.
Nyberg, in the final weeks of her mission, recently shared a star-themed quilt square she was able to complete inside the International Space Station. Now, she's inviting quilters from the public to create their own star-themed quilt squares to help celebrate her mission and passion for the quilting arts.
The International Quilt Festival and Nyberg will work together to have the squares stitched together for display at the 40th annual International Quilt Festival in 2014 and other public displays.

I used to be an Aerospace Composite Tech. which was a fancy name for a seamstress that actually sewed parts for the space shuttle! We affectionately called each other "The Sew Sisters" because there so few of us (16) of us who did this! I would be honored to be a part of this project and would love to participate and show some of the stuff we did at the next International Quilt Festival along with Karen. I also am a quilter and have donated quilts to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation to be used for STEM education scholarships. We both share a unique perspective in the idea of "sewing in space" ! I'd LOVE to go to Houston!!!
Jean Wright nerd
How did it go?
I know the astronauts are only allow 1 lb. of personal items that they can bring with them. So this shows me how precious her quilting is to her! :)
She may have gotten it classified as an 'experiment'.
So cool. God blss
Jean Wright I saw a video where a lady brought 4 flutes... Flutes weigh about 3-5 pounds
Actually, some flutes are very, very light
But Catherine Coleman also had one of Ian Anderson's flutes on the ISS, and since Tull won that Hard Rock Grammy, we kow his flutes are heavy metal instruments.
You are my absolute hero, Karen!
+Annika Victoria Pick a hero who isn't part of the NASA LIE
Puppy Bonz Thor?
Annika this comment is so old but im dying that you're in these comments! 😂
Love your channel! 💖
omg i love ur videos!!!!
Yes! She is the hottest fake Asstro-Not actor. Love her!
Love this challenge! A metal medical instrument tray that has been magnetized would better hold scissors, ruler and pin box in space, unless there was a weight problem. Cutting fabric might be easier if it had first been ironed onto freezer paper, which would give it a slight stiffening: a common quilting technique.
Love the idea of being part of a "space quilt" but need to find out if we should all use the same pattern or go on our own? Also, do we use the same color scheme?
Happy to see you are able to use your creativity in space!
4:17 she transform in super sayan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before: a normal astronaut
After:WOMEN GOKU
I love dedication such as this!
This looks awesome! I love Karen!
Karen Nyberg you gave me a reason to start over to quilt projects. After your video when I find it not worth trying'll remember you !!!!
A kiss Bazil
It looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
It is so exciting to see you quilting in space!
The people who work for mission control have the coolest desks ever.
This is Totally Awesome!!! Thank you, I will be contributing a block to your quilt.
you go girl!!!
I'm so glad I found this. Just shared with my family. My m-i-l and my sister's m-i-l are interested in quilts.
Totally excited. Im gonna design a block specially for this!!! Sqeeee
Have you tried/thought about tracing a 3-1/2 in. square then centering (yeah, right) the 3 in. square, trace it then cut around the big/outside lines?
Love this!♥ Put this one on your bucket list! 😳😍
She doesnt only sew, she sews in SPACE
This won't help, now but, my mom would hang a sheet of muslin on the wall and pre-stage her quilts by just sticking fabric to it. No pins required as the muslin and fabric would just stick together. Also, she used a large quilting hoop to keep fabric and lines straight. Muslin would be easy to bring into space and fasten to a surface. Hoop? Maybe.
LOVE THIS!
9 years ago, wow!
If you or anybody else could share a link to ANY video showing ANY spaceman, doing ANYTHING of "Scientific significance" onboard the international play station, It would be very much appreciated ....
That was amazing, I bet NASA were a bit worried about the Velcro pad floating around though..... we can never grumble again about our sewing, Karen coped beautifully, I loved the way it all kept floating around...can you imagine if she dropped the needle????????
so lovely! 😍😍😍
This is an awesome idea! I will share with some quilters I know, God Speed.
i love her hair.
Amazing! :O
Es increíble!!!
I had trouble finding specific info on submitting a block. It can be found at quilts dot com.
Now this is science in space
"Karen LuJean Nyberg (born October 7, 1969) is an American mechanical engineer and NASA astronaut."
American.
This is such a cool project! I'm not a quilter, but for this I could be. I wonder if they accept embroidery...
The only Karen I will ever love and tolerate❤️
nice job
what an awesome idea. best of luck with the quilt. have fun!
Fascinating. I do now truly appreciate the (lack of) gravity of the situation. :)
Sapce queen!🌠💖
Quilting goes everywhere. No seam ripper? Confident.
your hair is amazing, which shampoo do you use
aweaome! :)
cool! :D
my name is Karen too!
What I dont get is why they can't have a table and chair where the chair has a seat belt and the table with velcrow or magnets...
How long has She be in the space?
Rikke Andersen , she is in the Fake-Station on Earth . Lock by UA-cam.
The real question is... How do they post videos... When in space.
Careful with that hair Karen. Lt. Ripley might confuse you for an alien.
An Alien Hair Salon is not the busiest of places!
Freethinking Влади́мир p. Gogh
and now her husband is in space :)
Is it cold in space
I started my piece. #ninanostalgictable .. I call my piece #americanapplepie . Thank you so much for sharing!! I love it!! if only Great Grandma could see this!!! ..
Have you ever had a crocheter or knitter aboard the ISS?
Does any one know how long she has been in space?😊😊
about 6 months in that mission
4:22 I like this Hairstyle. Where can i get this?
Karen number is really a good astronaut🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀
This video 💯🔝💎🚀🛰️🎵👏🏽👍🏼❤️😉☺️
I consider this to be extremely valuable information.
Her hair: I have a bad hair day
New challenge for Bernina, Pfaff, Singer, and the others: Create a sewing machine for use in space!
Wow, seems like all my tools float away even with Earth gravity. I'd be useless in space.
Me and my brother want to be astronauts when I get older we would be the first sibling crew ever and I would like to bring pool noodle light savers so we can play the actual Star Wars
super saiyan at 4:20
2:10: "...three by three [inches]..."
I thought NASA uses the metric system ô.Ó
+whiterottenrabbit quilters don't though!
I had better stop cutting 1 cm squares with a 2mm seam allowance!!!
Most sewing enthusiasts use the English system not the metric.
Running is a good exercise for physical fitness . Two hours running daily is sufficient time for an astronaut for his/her self maintenance . Astronauts pass their maximum time in orbit so they should also make practices of Meditation and proper breathing practices to get mental peace and brain relax if possible during space life routine . Astronauts get fresh air in the space that is the best than earth' s dusty air. They are able to get breathing advance processes in fresh air of space so far.
On earth we are enjoying our life according to our circumstances .We should take a lesson from astronauts searching in space for humanity facing cruel hardships . through limited means man/woman astronauts get their physical and mental fitness during hardships .
Why does she have a neckless on?
string theory and space needles sew watt
Trivial as usual.

You know, I want to go to get fabric now. But, it won't be the same for me to craft because my hair isn't going to be like yours unless I use anti-gravity hair spray in copious amounts.
Im 6 years to late!
Alguém assistindo??...🤩🤗💘😁🖤💋😎💜
hii Karen
Qual seu signo do zodíaco???... e sua cor favorita??...😘🤪✌😎🤗
Am I the I only one that noticed that she has her wedding ring with her

Somebody watching again??💟🔮😁🤩🍄😎🇸🇯🖤🦋
Interesting how she solved her problems.
She is my favorite NASA actor!

What is space sex like? Has anyone ever done it?
That is a film set and green screen croma, she is not in the space.
Great. The more people like you claim that it would be fake without delivering any piece of evidence the people can see that you are all full of sh...
Fake and Green Screen
At exactly 5.00 she back flips yet after heels over head she tilts more diagonally for no reason?......or after obviously touching the suspension wires or something wtf folks ?
Wakey Wakey
when you pull your legs in any rotation is increased. Her mass is more dense along her length at that point increasing her spin along her length.
In the same way a ballerina spins faster when she pulls in her arms.
Foss Bom , exact. And you can see a Cut in the Video.
You know stupid people shouldn't talk but you'll learn that when you grow up
I wonder how is she going through menstruation in space
Why don't they broadcast the interior of the iss and its crew 24 hours a day? because there is no one! obvious
You wouldn't believe it even if they did, so what's the point?
This has nothing to do with what she is doing. She really made quilting an are up in space. How does one do laundry up there?
