    I've got an '06 E53 X5 BMW with the 3.0 turbo diesel motor, done about 380k so far. Not one oil leak anywhere, hasn't been modified in any way and has plenty of power. Servicing and proper maintenance is a must, I agree with Shauno servicing his more often due to the conditions it is driven in, the X5 I run it to around 22k to 24k between oil changes (BMW recommends 24k to 26k) but it doesn't get as far off road as these boys do. One big tip (apart from servicing and maintenance) is never thrash a cold drivetrain, that's when you'll do the most damage in a diesel.

No issues at all with clutch, gearbox or the motor. Just serviced it every 15.000 km as recommended by VW. THis amazed me really! Usually this one should last another 250.000 km.

    Roof top tents are pretty neat, but before you want to spend all that money and add unnecessary weight on the roof, not to mention save yourself from scurrying down in the middle of the night after heaps of beers (and stay warmer).
    Stick with your swag but put a self Inflatable mattress (100mm) under and in addition to the foam mattress (75mm) it comes with.
    When you set your swag up the self inflating mattress will inflate under the foam mattress by itself (as you rolled it up with the screw caps off).. have some beers.. screw caps on and lay down in swag.
    Luxury.

    Kia Sorento 2004 CRDi (european import)
    145,000 miles (~234,000km)
    Fit a catch can.
    Fit a pre fuel filter (10 micron) with a water bowl
    Check your fluids every week.
    New oil & filter every 3000 miles (USE THE RIGHT BLOODY OIL FOR YOUR OPERATING ENVIRONMENT! 10w50 for me) drain catchcan via outlet hose if needed.
    New pre fuel filter every second oil change, more often if you have dirty diesel in your area, drain bowl if needed. Good interval to inspect your brake pads too.
    Can of engine oil flush with every 4th oil change and inspection of belts, boots & hoses & new air filter at the same time.
    Don't forget diff & transfer case oils need changing too, eventually ;)
    Always let your glow plug light go out before you start it. Doesn't hurt to double glow on colder mornings.
    Never shut off your turbo diesel while she's hot, let her idle a minute or two after long drives or high revs.
    Similarly, don't run it hard until it's warmed up and the turbo's getting plenty of oil.
    Use the skinny pedal sparingly (she's built to go anywhere, not to go fast.) Let the torque do the talking.
    Old oil *and dirty fuel* are your two biggest enemies to engine longevity, so I'm told by old mate who is a diesel mechanic, that's what the pre filter is for. Crank case blow-by is your next biggest worry as the engine gets older, hence the catch can. I was also advised to fit a bigger, aftermarket auto transmission fluid cooler so I'm saving for that next.
    (edit) ha! nailed it! even the catch can & pre filter!
    pound it 👊

    No real secret's just regular maintenance, has been used as a work car for the past 12 years, including towing heavy trailers regularly. Previous owner replaced big end bearings, but that was more a preventative measure rather than actually being needed. (Was shown the old bearings at time of purchase).

The car didn't have any major engine or gearbox issues as yet and it is now over 44000 km without any signs of slowing down. For me there are 3 major aspects on a diesel engine longevity:
    1. Maintenance always on time
    2. Always choose the correct gear to avoid stressing the engine with low revs
    3. Never stress the engine with high revs before warming up.
    Good lack and enjoy your 4x4s

    418,000km on my 02 Pajero 3.2DID auto with 56mm 15T Kinugawa turbo running 26psi, EGR removal, catch can, turbosmart dual stage boost controller, snorkel, K&N air filter, 22” Black Rhino wheels, ecu piggyback chip, inlet butterfly removal, polished lifter cover, Synergy B4 Ron box fuel controller with fuel cut defender and off boost enrichment, EGT gauge, boost gauge, engine temp gauge, cat delete.
    And just ordered a 320x300mm front mount intercooler to try keeping EGT’s down as I’m hitting 800 occasionally. She goes 0-100 in 8.4sec according to my app and destroys Ford Ranger’s and spins the 285 Scorpion’s with ease. These engines are highly underrated I drive mine very hard and mine burns zero oil between services. Also going to upgrade intercooler piping to 2 3/4” when intercooler arrives and will up the boost once EGT’s are under control to 30psi but that’s apparently all the stock pump can handle. I love driving it.

    • @tormis1987
      @tormis1987 4 роки тому +1

      Constant cold running does kill the engine, tho oils are getting hell of alot better. Boys spoke about escort trucks and Jason You about taxis. Constant idle or low rpm running in 1st/2nd gear is also bad. You may have 200k Kms on the clock but the engine has been running 5 days a week 12-16 hrs a day, so the 200k does seem like little, but the car has been working hard.

    • @mugget
      @mugget 4 роки тому +2

      Maybe another reason not to block off EGR (as if being illegal wasn’t enough). Like the boys said manufacturers spend a mint on R&D, EGR heats up engine quicker than without so I’m sure that’s all been factored into the way that people use modern diesel vehicles.

    • @Nick-sd7um
      @Nick-sd7um 4 роки тому +6

      @@mugget not quite. Take the GU patrol for example. Prior to EGR, those engines (the 4.2s) were clean inside with nill carbon build up when opened up around 300,000ks.. EGR introduced as part of new emissions laws and the engines, intake etc all full of soot, carbon build up.
      R&D went into reducing emissions and it was at the expense of engine longevity.

    • @tormis1987
      @tormis1987 4 роки тому +1

      @@mugget The faster warmup time comes from the EGR cooler, that is warmed by exhaust gas and that heat is then used in the main cooling system. I have had cars with and without the egr (Blocked off) and the difference in warmup time is little to non. The intake on the other hand in my 1.9TDI VW was totaly different after the egr delete. Im not saying it is good to delete it and i have not done it in my common rail diesel that is newer, but the first year EGR systems were total sh*t.

    • @jasonsampson916
      @jasonsampson916 4 роки тому +4

      Egr is fine in an engine once a catch can is added... take out the oil and the soot has nothing to stick to... for example is your exhaust pipe clogged up from exhaust going through it? No it’s not, maybe not spotless but nothing like the intake where oil is added from crankcase therefore remove the oil, remove the problem, egr is not the problem, crankcase venting is, just fit a catch can

    Attach little jingle bells to your dog's collar. It helps you find them if they wander off. It also lets wild critters hear them coming and gives the wild animal a chance to run off. If your pup likes to chase them it gives them some distance in case it may be dangerous or inconvenient prey. Skunks or porcupine for example.

    My old truck which I replaced 6 months ago was a Navara D40 and had 528,000 km on it, and out of those maybe 25% was tracks/offroad, 65% open road and 10% city driving. What I did (and always do) is oil (and filter) change at not 5,000 but 10,000 kms and also a change of the gearbox (auto) and transmission components at about every 35,000 kms. Finally, I live in Sweden where we have some long and cold winters (less so the last couple if years...) and this makes an engine heater a must have in a diesel, without it you can hear the engine suffering at every cold start. I’ve taken to using it year around, and I think this makes a difference. In my new truck I got a diesel powered heater so it can run even with no electric outlet nearby. Another thing, which may be a given to this crowd, is to realky keep tabs on the vehicle and know when something is broken or about to break and to fix stuff right away rather than driving around with sketchy backyard fixes that risks breaking down and causing more damage, or causes wear to other things. Apart from that I just drove it sensibly. For mods it’s - bull bar, winch, rock sliders, a 2” lift, 33” wheels, snorkel, front locker, underbody protection, dual batteries, a crane and some cargo and tool holders in the tub, pretty much the same as on my new one.

      Yeah he wrote off the gray one down here in Newcastle. They had finished filming at redhead beach and were heading to pub with accommodation in the hunter valley. Didn’t quite make it and the trip was scrapped until they could repeat it with the red dmax.

    I had an 1986 toyota camry with about 400,000 Kilometers on it that I bought second hand because it had working air con. The secret was keep oil in it, driving her nicely and if something was working hit it. As long as you are only hitting the part that is not working it will fix itself. One day the car wouldn't start so I opened the hood, smack some ignition components and the relays with a screw driver, slammed the hood and off to work I went.

    I think the reason why land cruisers are seen hitting 500,000km more often then Nissan’s as a whole is purely because most Nissan’s that end up getting 400,000km on them end up being sold dirt cheap, some dude comes along with a boot load of cash and swaps everything, engine, gearbox, diffs, suspension, even interiors in some cases

    438000 on the 60. 2H motor. Paint it with a rattle can and roller. What I cant fab in the shed doesnt go on it. Missus loves going for a drive in it. Fits my budget. The main thing is its fun. I recognise the reliability of an old truck, would probably get a new one (lend or rent) to do a great big trip, but my old beast loves Moreton and the Great South East and thats where I go at the moment (after the plague) its all about what fits your life. Have fun whatever you have guys and girls. Probably the best bit is getting your mates to help and have trips with.

And when I starred to first use it man it made the world of difference in power.

    My old 2002 Hilux has 290000kms in the clock, Stock 1KZTE motor and as Shuno said, mechanically sympathy goes a long way, I've only ever pushed my Hilux a couple of times off-road, I don't redline every gear change and I do service it every 5000 km. I always put fuel doctor in when I fill up and every now and then I'll add a fuel additive like the Nulon Turbo cleaner just to keep it sound smooth as silk.

    Giving an engine a bit of warmup is always helpful for longevity, the more evenly that temperatures change throughout the engine will mean less wear. An example is a cylinder head which is directly subjected to combustion temps. If its cold outside and you start driving hard immediately on a cold engine, then the temp will change too quickly and theres a risk of cracking the head or other components. Always good to get the engine and engine oil up to temp gradually.
