I'm coming to Thailand for over two decades and nothing has changed in terms of cost of living, the prices have remained same for almost everything, the taxes, VAT have remained same as well. Thai's have incredible will power and pain tolerance which cannot be measured in terms of GDP plus they have huge respect for others, which is the reason they are non violent. Thailand is the best place on the planet right now.

To understand Thailand, ppl need to understand our core values.
No.1 Live your life at the moment. I would weight for myself present/past/ future = 60/0/40.
No.5 In Buddhism, we categorizes action in 3 groups. 1.physical/body 2. verbal/speaking 3. thinking & mind. Aggressive morality would be considered unethical/uneducated mind. Like a wild monkey jumping around btw trees. Haven't train or learn how to control and settle. This is beyond lack of manners or showing any form of aggressive. If someone temporarily lost their mind, we classify them as lowest state of mind at that moment. Once their state of mind back on track, we can solve an issue by talking to each other and then allow apologize & forgivenes do the rest. Legal action is unnecessary for minor issue. I would say it's easier to accept bad things in life for us than the west.
TBH western democracy is destroying many things we have even though there are good things in its. If you've gone too far without balancing, it would cause other issues. That's why Thailand may not fully change to democracy like westerns. People alert and aware all the time that others will trick or cheat or take advantage etc. That is NOT good mindset for collective society like Thailand but may fit for individualism.
In Thailand, you can do whatever you want as long as you do not disrupt or disturb others. Individualism was confined by social collective. None of my business until it's affect others. We are conservative in many senses but carefully progressive in our way.
We got our own issue. In any cases, I wish you happy and healthy. Cheers !!!

Do NOT buy a car. it's a huge money sink. don't buy luxury items and status symbols, they're useless. rent a place with a size you actually need. don't rent empty, useless space. invest the saved money. Aggressive morality - I read about this and I hear about it but during my 10 day visits to the US last year and last month I didn’t experience it. The visit last month was a reunion visit where I met up with dozens of old friends from high school and college that I hadn’t seen in a decade. No one brought up any unpleasantness. There is of course something artificial about a short visit but I am happy that it was a pleasant visit.

Do you need to be "unhappy" to feel happier in a country with the 5 characteristics you described? I find this to be the only discordant note in the video. Before visiting Thailand, I didn't know it was possible to feel like you feel when you are there. I grew up in a Western democracy, and I thought the only way of living was the one I knew. For sure, I complained a lot about my country's issues (as many Westerners do, I guess), but I did not feel unhappy. After visiting Thailand, my idea of "feeling good" has completely changed. Now I understand that in my country (and in my city, specifically), the cost of living is absurd, there is a significant lack of cheerfulness, and people tend to be much more confrontational. To be honest, spending time in Thailand made me understand that I am part of the problem (with my behavior), and now I am trying to improve. But, in summary, that happened just because Thailand is Thailand and not because I was unhappy when I started visiting it. Anyway, thanks for posting this video. It made me reflect on this issue.

From what I think, it's about 2 factors that makes Thais calm and respectful. 1. We want to be viewed as good men, to having a face to brag. 2. We don't want to confront people so we giving everyone respect.

Freedom - I do without a doubt feel more free in Thailand. Thailand has more relaxed regulations that are lightly enforced because they also have a population that values public non-confrontation. US citizens (I am American) are constantly going on about their Constitutional rights. They value freedom of speech and then practice the most vulgar of politics and social discourse. They value the right to openly carry guns but then foster disfunctional societies and live in fear of their elected government. They regulate every aspect of their lives to avoid personal responsibility and to give themselves a basis for blaming others for their problems and personal failings. They live a life of hyper individualism that atomizes families and then they wonder why they feel alone.
It is not hard to find some of the downsides to the Thai culture of conformity, saving face, and living in the moment but it seems to lead to happier daily lives and I think expats here try to tap into that part of the culture.

Because they can spend their money (with much higher value) in baht, go around and not work. But they will feel poverty later on, whether they it or not, because life in Thailand is all spending and leisure, but that cannot last forever.

Disagree, if a person has solid investment income then they can live in Thailand in perpetuity. Let other Americans pay for their lifestyle.

@@PapaOsmubal.OscarBalajadia Disagree, plenty of retirees live in Thailand. There's even a retirement visa. The majority of foreign western residents in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, and Pattaya are all older retirees living on investment income and/or pensions. The Thailand retirement visa program goes as far as to request proof of income.

Thailand has the rocket fuelled tourism in the world, the core reason was always retirees/investors/digital nomads/all-time spender hippies and sex tourists.
Contrary to popular belief, long overhaul visitors tend to bring the best money to their economy. So your average all-time spender hippy won't really contribute much

No, just trying to be charitable to all of the hardcore American patriots who will tell me about how their insurance makes emergencies cheap.
