How I Made a 1950's Princess Coat

  • Here's how I hand-sewed the pink 1950's coat I've been dreaming of for ages! After wearing it a fair few times, I've learned that it looks extra fantastic with a belt...
    My sewing methods aren't exactly standard, so my coat isn't quite how a tailor would make it. But I don't consider that to be historically inaccurate at all! If I was living in another era, I would probably still make clothes my own way. Different people find certain methods harder or easier, and this is how I like to sew. So be creative and do what works for you!

    I’ve been wanting a princess coat for awhile! Yours looks absolutely marvelous, I LOVE that shade of pink!! I’ll have to keep this video in mind for when I can sew better

    If anyone wants to make this but isn’t confident with drafting, McCall’s M6800, specifically view D is very similar, it just uses princess seams instead of darts, which you can quickly alter !

    I just love all your videos and love seeing all that talent! The coat is just gorgeous, but we have to talk about that red sweater with the fur collar thing. WOW! You looked absolutely amazingly beautiful in that!❤❤❤❤ I don’t put my notifications on for very many, but you I certainly don’t want to miss. Thanks for the videos. Happy New Year!🎉

      Omg, you’re so kind! 💕 I absolutely adore that Christmas outfit too. I don’t usually wear red, but the Christmas season is the exception, and I always have a lot of fun with it!

    Your lining fabric is so thin and slippery that you can '"tissue stitch" it together on the machine, the next time you sew up a coat. However, you stitched the lining together beautifully by hand! Also, you saved a bundle on electricity by sewing this garment up by hand, brilliant!

    I love your coat! I always wanted to make one but all the tailoring made it sound so scary. Your method gives such a beautiful result and sounds actually doable! I'm going to hunt for some nice thick fabric to try to make this!

      That’s awesome, I hope it goes well! I totally agree, the fancy tailoring methods sounded so complicated, and I knew there must be an easier way to do it. I made it simple and I’m very happy with the results!

    oh, when I had a vibrating shuttle machine I also had issues with tension that made me give up on ever sewing with that machine.
    at fist I had to adjust the needle bar height which helped a lot.
    and then I worked out that it much preferred cotton thread over polyester. the cotton is softer and folds better into gentle loops.
    but even when I thought I had it all sorted out it'd still give me so much trouble i gave up. but also mine wasn't a good brand. the brand that produced it only existed for a few years between the world wars. I've seen singer branded ones work beautifully and I hope you can sort yours out.
    now days I suggest anyone look for a singer 201 or a 66 or something with a round bobbin to begin with vintage machines. they seem much more reliable and easy to find parts for.

      Thank you so much! I definitely hope I can figure things out with the machine, but I fortunately don’t really mind hand sewing.

      That makes me so happy to hear! I think people’s mistake in sewing is usually just over-complicating things. Some explanations make it sound way too intimidating.

      That's so true! After all it's just cutting fabric and stitching it together to fit your imagination :) I successfully finished everything but the sleeves today and am so happy to sew again - thank you!

    I strongly recommend thick beautiful wool for this coat, AND what about inside shoulder pads and innerlining for warmth?

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Рік тому +1

      Believe you me, I would have LOVED some nice wool for this. But buying enough real wool to make a coat like this would been incredibly expensive, and this material was second hand and affordable. I’ve found it to be very warm for my uses. As for shoulder pads, that would be great for a 1940’s coat! But fashions of the 50’s usually went softer on the shoulders, which I personally like.

    Hi! I adore your style and everything about it, you really inspired me to find my style as well (40s and 50s) I just wanted to make a suggestion to do a fabric shower cap like that blue striped one I saw in a video of yours. Thank you!

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Рік тому

      Thank you so much! Yes, I made that shower cap a long time ago and it’s rather small. But I was just given a different one that fits super well, so that’s what I use now.

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Рік тому

      I have indeed! The hair cap is quite easy. Just cut out a really big circle and hem all around the edge. But not too skinny of a hem. Then you can feed an elastic through it and voila! You have a hair cover!

    I think pockets aligned with side seams would be most gorgeous. And how are you going to close the from. I agree with the decision to top stitch. I do think that military-looking gold buttons would be best. Or, button covered with coat fabric would also be lovely. Resulting coat is lovely

    Not patch pockets. Those sleeves need to be more voluminous. I had a similar coat. Except it had a half belt going around the back, secured on either end with matching gold buttons. It had a “v” neckline and was double breasted. Wore it in New York’s bitter cold winters for 3 years.

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Рік тому +1

      I designed the coat as I wanted it to be and I’m very happy I did the heart-shaped patch pockets. I know they’re not for everyone, but they’re very my-style. I also personally like the sleeves as they are. I wanted them to be pretty simple.

  • @Geoplanetjane
    @Geoplanetjane Рік тому

    The coat to me looks like it should be a lot looser. To account for bulkier winter clothes you would wear. Tapered sleeves? Hmm. What if you want to wear a sweater or blazer underneath?

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Рік тому

      Well, I’m a string bean-ish kind of person. 😂 I have hypermobility spectrum disorder, so I’m naturally quite thin. The coat actually is quite loose for me as it is and I can fit a lot underneath. I actually prefer it with a belt on top to cinch the waist.
