Hamilton: "I am not throwing away my shot" Ensemble: "Just you wait". Chilling.

I get full body chills at that "history has it's eyes on you" every time.
And I love the energy of the "Alexander Hamilton! Hamilton!" when he runs up the steps
I agree Yorktown *seems* like a good act ender but truly, this story is about the Hamiltons, not just America, so I think it's more appropriate *not* to end on Yorktown

The best part is the absolute disgust that Odom uses when he says "the other 51" I get chills everytime!

I didn’t feel it as disgust, but more so to drive home the fact that Hamilton was hell on wheels when it came to him writing anything in particular. Remember, “Hamilton is a host unto himself. As long as he can hold a pen, he's a threat.” (Adams Administration)

    • @voliteon

Yeah I didn't find it to be disgust, rather drilling home the point that Hamilton is so motivated and 'non stop' (the title of the song)

I love how the structure & mood of this song match the lyrics: the song itself -IS- non-stop! It describes Hamilton's relentless energy by using relentless energy! I realize such pairing of text & music is every composer's goal, but LMM brilliantly nails it with this number.

Hamilton won sooo many awards at the Tonys. They won Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lead Actor (Leslie Odom Jr.), Direction (Thomas Kail), Original Score (LMM), Best Actor in a Featured Role (Daveed Diggs), and Best Actress in a Featured Role (Renee Elise Goldsberry). Philippa Soo lost out as Best Lead Actress in a Musical to Cynthia Erivo for The Color Purple. In total, Hamilton was nominated 16 times for 13 awards, the most ever for a musical, a record which still hasn't been beaten, though it was almost tied last year when Jagged Little Pill was nominated 15 times.
Short version: Yes, they won for Direction.

I remember my first experience of a revolving stage in a musical. I went to see Les Miserables up in Sacramento, and while the revolving floor wasn't used *quite* as much as it's used in Hamilton, it made its presence felt in one single moment. The barricades are up, the final battle is being played out, and the floor turns the barricade around to show one single man dangling from the top, obviously having been shot down, with the red flag draped across him. It was one hell of a moment. You could have heard a pin drop in the audience if the orchestra wasn't blaring out the beautiful notes at top volume. More musicals should use a turntable in the stage. It's a very effective tool.

The end of act one is the highest point in his life personally. If he had listen to everyone else and backed off he would have lived a happy life. But his drive kept him in the city which opened him to the mess that he created. When we let ego or compulsively take control, we can cause our own demise.

I'm a simple creature. I see a Marc Daniel Patrick video doing a Hamilton response... I click.
I love how this is the ending of Act 1. It brings together how important these people are in Hamilton's life, career, success, and downfall... but circles around to emphasize that this isn't just another retelling of the Revolutionary War... but this is the story of Hamilton and the irony should not be lost on anyone that he's probably the most single-minded Founding Father with regards to wanting to preserve his legacy and make a name for himself and yet, it's his contributions and role that were nearly lost to us. Until this musical, he was nothing more the man that's on the $10 bill... one of only two non-presidents featured on our paper money and yet, most people had no clue who he was.
I sincerely hope that it is never lost on people that with one musical, LMM and the amazingly talented people who collaborates with managed to reinvigorate an entire generation's worth of Americans, Brits, and more love of musicals AND history. The cast of characters are written in such a way that everyone can find someone they connect to on some level... and for a lot of neurodivergent individuals (ADHD/ASD/OCD/CPTSD/Bipolar/etc) they're finally feeling seen, even if Hamilton himself doesn't have a label. He has so many classic quirks of neurodivergence that it is hard not to see yourself in him... whether its his perseverations, ruminations, hyperfocus, relentless energy, struggle with social skills, impulse control, emotional dysregulation, being a polymath... the list goes on. There's something anyone who is ND can connect with if not multiple somethings. If it's not evident yet through my comments on every single one of your reaction videos.... I connect strongly with him, the good and the ugly. Still, I know others who see themselves in Angelica's self-sacrifices... Phillipa's loving devotion... Burr's guarded behavior and reservations... Washington's experience, steadfastness, and leadership... I also connect with Angelica immensely. Her loving and supportive family likely made a world of difference for her... growing up highly intelligent in a society that didn't so easily respect and honor intelligent women. If Hamilton had had the same loving family, maybe he would have been a more sociable, less arrogant human but maybe a less extraordinary/memorable one. I hate to admit this as a woman, but if Angelica and Eliza weren't connected to Hamilton, would we remember them today and be arguing for their status as being defined as Founding Mothers?

@@MarcDanielPatrick although it really isn't the same, I believe that using the working theater/film rendition, whether or not your audience can see what you do, it is still better than reacting to the original cast album, because one can heard the subtle differences that still wow us with the playfulness, the energy, the drama of the live performance that really can't be equaled by the admittedly superb album.
So don't feel too bad, we can still feel and hear the vibe and it makes for great video.

At 14:52, you mentioned that they had to bring the cast back to film this. Technically, Jonathan Groff was the only person that they brought back to film this. He was the only principal cast member that left the production before they filmed it. Groff originally left in April of 2016. Betsy Struxness (left in March of 2016) and Emmy Raver-Lampman (left In April of 2016) are ensemble members who left the broadway production before the proshot, but they aren’t on the disney+ recording (weren’t brought back). The proshot was filmed in June of 2016. Lin and Leslie didn’t leave until July of 2016.

This number is an absolute master class in staging. And while I agree with you about Leslie Odom Jr. playing the Emcee, I would like to make another proposal - I think he's the only one who could even come close to touching Ben Vereen as the Leading Player in Pippin. I would pay an unreasonable amount of money to see that.

I also kind of wish the culmination bit was how the song ended but at the same time I love how we quickly recontextualize Alexander’s songs. We get “not throwing away my shot” but this time it’s interweaves with “just you wait” from Alexander Hamilton to imply that “maybe this time he will throw away his shot”, setting us up for his downfall in act two.

While I agree that Yorktown FEELS like the number to end Act 1, it doesn’t make sense for the story of Hamilton. In his story, THIS is the high point, and it’s all downhill from here.
