  • Hi guys! Just a video I've been thinking about sharing for some time. I finally decided to do it. Here's why I don't normally like knitting with sheep's wool.

I always wondered why you don't knit with wool much! I hadn't even heard of mulesing. P.S love your serious professional voice XD

Poor sheep! Thanks for not showing anything graphic. I had no idea bout mulesing. Thank you for educating me. I was undecided about my moral position on wool, since the sheep aren't killed and wool, I thought, would surely have some ethical credit due it is being a natural fibre. This was really interesting. I'm with you. Not interested in buying anything made from wool now unless I know more about the sheep. But even the tail docking without anesthetic! I would be devastated if someone did that to my cat, or mum's doggo. Sheep aren't so different. :(

Yes it is something we all need to be aware of, where our fibre comes from. Even as I was researching for this video I read that sheep are eventually sold for meat once their wool gets less nice, and if I'd stopped to think about it that would have been obvious. But since I hadn't given it much thought it made me sad to realise that. Makes me want to rescue an ex wool sheep one day. An animal fibre that I believe is more ethically produced in Australia is alpaca. While there is a small alpaca meat industry here, I think the animals are prized enough that they are treated with more respect than sheep. Plus, their wool is less prone to felting.

Introduced animals, including sheep, have contributed to the destruction of the unique ecosystem that the continent of Australia had before the introduction of animals from other paces.
