But animation is not good. Maybe they didn't have the budget? Her facial expressions were stiff and her lip movements felt off. The style is great though, but I wish they had made it better.
@@pasindudinusha6507 They had the budget, they used that to create a stylised throwback, because this IS how anime used to look. That's why it works so well. Go look up clips of the original Sailor Moon or Speed Racer, and you will see the similarities.

I don’t really think any of the current mainstream artists are on the same level as Dua Lipa. She has something special. I just discovered "levitating" today. After watching the live action video, my first thought was "I hope that there is a version that doesn't have DaBaby." All respect, but it's not my style. This not only fit the bill, but had that awesome 80's anime style to boot. Cheers!!
Honestly the looped animation and sometimes simplistic moves they chose for the dances really makes it more authentic and appears more as an 80s anime than if they were to have gone all out on the animation. I totally love the vibe they got with this, and it makes for such a memorable video and song!
The looped animations really get you back to the time when animation was beautifully hand drawn, but for the animators was very hard, time consuming and tiring. So they reused bits and pieces of animations every now and then in order to save time and optimize work loads. These details really help to give that retro feeling they were looking for.
Eh I wished they went with more frames for smoother animation. Because believe it or not 80's anime did have amazing animation even in the 80's. Nausicaa, My Neighbor Totoro, Akira, Wicked City, etc... All in the 80's and had smooth and gorgeous animation.
@@conyo985 That's what I was thinking too. The aesthetic art style is spot on, but it felt off with the stiff looped movements. All the 80's anime I've seen have very fluid movements. I still love the music video just could have been better.

Seeing this reminds me to a time when anime fans community were niche and so inclusive on the internet. We were doing Anime Music Video(AMV) with the hottest tracks on the billboard with 90s and 2000s anime clips.
Ugh I am in LOVE with this animation style. Whoever decided to even make an animated music video in the first place and then have it mimic 80s anime deserves praise. It looks so good and perfectly choppy. Creamy Mami, Kimagure Orange Road, California Crisis, City Hunter, anything with that City Pop aesthetic, and of course Sailor Moon - it all looks so good!!
This video is really giving me nostalgia about the cartoons I used to watch as a kid. These type of animes were so popular here in my country. Dua really giving us everything. 💕

The art style and composition really does bring back a sense of anime nostalgia I could find in older anime like Sailor Moon or even Creamy Mami for instance. It is very well done!
Who ever got paid to do this animation clearly didn’t get paid enough, give them both a raise and a bonus! There is no words to describe how amazing the retro animation is, the references and homage to classic anime. This is pure gold!
Mhm, and a lot of my fav animes are old ones. Like kodocha, sailor Moon, Dragonball(not z not super not whatever, just dragon ball when Goku was like 12), Ranma, Inuyasha, this one anime I forgot the name of, Elfen lied, Kirarin revolution, many more.
As a lifelong anime fan, it blows my mind to know that even 10 years ago, it was unthinkable that someone as big as Dua could have a music video that is so overtly an homage to retro anime. This is so beautiful!

But that seemed like much more of a personal passion project for daft punk that came out the better part of 20 years ago, and has remained almost a singular oddity in that time. Dua Lipa’s video seems like a much more casual embrace of retro anime aesthetic done by a group that specializes in retro content. And I dont know for sure, but it seems to me like this is potentially being exposed to a much larger and more general audience than daft punks. So I guess the difference in my mind is the Dua Lipa’s video is more symbolic of our cultural acceptance of anime into the mainstream, the culmination of a generation of young people growing up with Toonami, sailor moon, and such, rather than as a one-off passion project by a french duo seeking to distinguish themselves with exotic imagery.

This art style is like a cross between Sailor Moon and (older) Macross….AWESOME
The animation, transitions, outfits and expressions are all beautiful. I think they took inspiration from Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Pichi Pichi Pitch, and I love it all.

@@LJ3783 If we want to be technical here. The proper resolution would be 480i as 240p was not the broadcast standard. In fact mainly only game consoles of the era played in 240p. Or 512i if you were in Europe. Lol

As a lifelong anime fan, it blows my mind to know that even 10 years ago, it was unthinkable that someone as big as Dua could have a music video that is so overtly an homage to retro anime. This is so beautiful!

But that seemed like much more of a personal passion project for daft punk that came out the better part of 20 years ago, and has remained almost a singular oddity in that time. Dua Lipa’s video seems like a much more casual embrace of retro anime aesthetic done by a group that specializes in retro content. And I dont know for sure, but it seems to me like this is potentially being exposed to a much larger and more general audience than daft punks. So I guess the difference in my mind is the Dua Lipa’s video is more symbolic of our cultural acceptance of anime into the mainstream, the culmination of a generation of young people growing up with Toonami, sailor moon, and such, rather than as a one-off passion project by a french duo seeking to distinguish themselves with exotic imagery.

It's Future Nostalgia, so it's a fusion of old animation and modern music, and it's a clever and chic way to create a Sailor Moon respect by adding Moonlight.
As a Japanese person, I just want to say thank you for making this work.
