Awesome. And it shows why Sam Phillips was such a great producer--he just as much a psychologist as a music lover and businessman. Jerry Lee was torn up about 'Great Balls of Fire;' he couldn't bring himself to sing the lyrics because he believed it referred to the fires of Hell. And, Phillips, naturally, tried to persuade him that singing rock and roll was okay (Phillips at 2:47 - "You can save souls!" Lewis at 2:57 - "How can the DEVIL save souls?!") Phillips once said that a big part of his success was that "tape is cheap," meaning he'd never rush the artists--he allowed them as much time as they needed to do their recordings without constantly watching the clock.
you really don't get it do you?? LISTEN to what Jerry is saying about JESUS WORDS, NOT Sam's words. IF you do not receive JEsus as your Lord and savior you will NOT be saved.
You got it wrong. I think this was a defining moment for Jerry to choose between God and the Devil ... Lots of people nowadays know that the music industry is basically selling your soul to make money, and it says in the Gospel that it's hard for the rich to enter Heaven. Philips was pretty much pressuring him because he cared about money more than his faith. "You can save souls" being blasphemous because what he went on to sing wasn't a Gospel song. It was an excuse for him to stop denying himself and go on singing what eventually made him world famous.... But at what cost?
Billy Lee Riley is the man that keeps saying "Let's cut it" and "Hallelujah". And not that it makes a difference, but it helps to remember that these men had been drinking. They were trying to record Great Balls of Fire, so thats why the tapes were recording.
hahaha LMAO, i knew this existed but never heared it before. tell me, was this when jerry lee lewis didn't want to record great balls of fire 'cause is was unorthodox or something? god bless jack clemment for turning that recording machine on.

I believe that nobody can do enough good. Jerry would have to lock himself in a closet to not sin and he still would with his mind...so he HAS to have come to this conclusion by now...John 3:16 "whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life". Jesus died on the cross for past future and present sins. That doesn't give a license to sin but it is supposed to give you hope and you are not supposed to beat yourself up all day and night. I think that is all Sam was trying to say to him. It IS possible to sing "Great Balls of Fire" and also save souls....not by SINGING Great Balls Of Fire, but by preaching the gospel. What we are hearing here to those who don't know the difference IT SOUNDS TO ME are the theological differences between a Pentecostal/Assembly Of God denomination belief (Jerry) vs Southern Baptist belief (Sam). Sam believed in Jesus because he says it and he also said He was as real today as he was yesterday...the Bible says "No one can say Jesus is Lord and believe it anyway except by the Holy Spirit. Sam obviously believes "once saved always saved" and Jerry constantly was beating himself up because he was taught differently. Jesus wants a relationship with us. He doesn't want us to get hung up on RELIGION.
I wish I could smash this like button on your comment 100 times, because what you said and your delivery on it, makes perfect sense to me. I am trying to find my way again off and on with the Lord, and find that I struggle with a lot of the same things Jerry did, as I play / sing secular music in clubs and bars to support my family and I. I especially like how you said at the end of your statement, Jesus wants a relationship with us, and not for us to be hung up on religion. Absolutely eloquent.
According to Sam Phillips, Howlin Wolf was the only artist that he’d let drink during a session. I’m sure there was a nip or two consumed outside the studio from time to time.
Mr. Phillips had before him the next Elvis and having identified that prodigious talent as a potential source of incredible amounts of money, Mr. Phillips tried to convince The Killer that he could save souls with Rock n' Roll. The love of filthy lucre is a profound motivation. I hope Mr. Phillips and Jerry Lee Lewis both repent while they still have time; and if y'all do not want The Killer to repent, ask your own self why you love rock 'n roll more than The Killer's soul.
Sam Phillips sees Jerry Lee as a golden calf or cash cow so he is afraid that Jerry Lee's conviction will prompt him to leave the studio, not record hits for him, and never return.
The genuine torment in his voice is sad to hear. He told Elvis they were 'going to hell'. Elvis replied 'Jerry, don't ever say that again'. Indoctrinated as kids, they genuinely believed they could be playing the devil's music. Little Richard suffered the same inner struggle.
H.E L.L. Great God of mighty, Great balls of fire! Jerry Lee was straight off the farm. We in the South been fighting our whole lives not to go to hell and Phillips is giving Jerry Lee a ticket to the front of the line. Hahahahaha!! Been a hellava life. If we are going to hell? We will all be there together. I suspect God has a great sense of humor with his kids and we are just fine.
He said that because that's what it was to everyone else who felt like what he was doing was wrong. He just wanted to make music. He mocked people like that al the time. He's doing something he loves and is being judged. That's harsh...
One of the most alarming points about this is Jerry Lee's doctrine is off... waaaay off. Jesus paid the sin debt for sinners, this doesn't mean we go out and get a free pass to sin, rather we have an advocate with the Father through the Son who took that price, and put it on himself! We are forgiven... it is finished. However singing about fornication and promoting it to the youth of America... NOT GOOD! He was right to not want to do this... but he did do it... now didn't he?
