One key factor was never mentioned in this short video. US intelligence knew the attack was coming at Midway because they had broken Japanese codes, and so were 'ready and waiting' for the attack when it came. That's a big part of the reason why the smaller American fleet was so effective against its larger opponent.
Dallas McQuarrie neither did they mention that the Mk XIII torpedo didn't work. RIP torpedo 8 , you deserved better.
@GoldenShellback
If memory serves, the actual objective was designated as "AF." Other than that, quite accurately reported. 🙂

@@thekspguy4421 I'm not 100 percent sure but I think they did.
having a BIG red dot on top of any ship is a BAD idea
The Big Red dot on the bow of the Japanese carrier, is actually the Big Red dot that is used on the Japanese flag. Indicating to the Land of the rising sun. Japan learned their lesson well not to paint their Nation's flag on the weather deck of their Navy ships after WW-2.
In retrospect, it should have been reconsidered
@@robertboyes2505they weren’t really the brightest it seems 😂😂
As much as "they have awoken the giant, and have felt its wrath" sounds very nationalistic, it was more than true enough. Japan had awoken the military giant USA; it could manufacture more battleships, tanks, planes, weapons and ammunition and recruit more soldiers in time than Japan could at this stage.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember reading something that the Battle of Midway turned the tide. Japan could no longer go on the offensive against the USA, and so started their defensive stance which led to the whole Island-to-Island warfare. We know that this led to some really bloody battles (e.g. Battle of Okinawa!). It shows America had superior military powers and it could defeat Japan more certain and certain, but Japan still had their almost unbreakable morale which came from their loyalty to homeland and emperor.
So I think it is quite true to say USA was a military giant against Japan, but neither side had it easy all the same.
I think they were paraphrasing something Yamamoto wrote in his diary after Pearl Harbor.
Either way the battle went japan never could have one
Before the Midway battle, USA had 7 aircraft carriers under construction, while japan had only one. So japan had to win Midway
Of course its nationalistic, its an American TV show.
America F#%& yeah! Also rip Japan in WW@ pearl harbor was a failure

RIP Yorktown. She took an absolute beating throughout the entire battle and kept on fighting.
Same!! I was a soldier on this battle vessel and she took quite the beating from her opponents!! I will never forget her power and push through the oceans waves. Long live the big Yorkie!! (What we called it when I was stationed on the vessel)

That was deep :D
Zelkrov wow I know wow
This battle followed on from Battle of the Coral Sea which was the 1st time Japan & USA fought since Pearl Harbour. The USA repelled an amphibious landing on New Guinea by the Japanese . The Yorktown was still damaged from this battle when it took part in the Battle of Midway. If you are interested in the Battle of Midway then I highly recommend checking out the Battle of the Coral Sea
Wow. The history channel talking about... history... never thought I'd see the day
There was a time when history was mostly just documentaries. Unfortunately, shows like american pickers and ancient aliens get better ratings. Enter capitalism.
History Channel is History...... 😄😄😄😄😄
Why would you want to learn about the battles of WWII on the History Channel when you can watch “experts” talk about a stick that was found on Oak Island?

Such an amazing battle.
Man this video is substandard for History
I always wondered if the general officers in the Japanese Army smirked or were aghast at the Navy losing 4 carriers. I ask because there was a lot of hatred between the two services.
Probably aghast. The primary agenda for the Japanese during WW2 was expansion of pacific control, which only the Navy could do.
I think they don't even know what happen to Midway since the govt make the result as classified and only several high rank officer know this. This make the army general who defend their island have made wrong strategy since they think the navy still have strong naval power that could support them.
The Navy didn't tell anyone they lost 4 carriers they said they were only damaged.
As the others said the navy kept it a secret the emperor was told but noone in the army knew

When Admiral Halsey got laid up in the hospital. He selected Admiral Spruance to take his place. Admiral Nimitz had an excellent staff to work out all the details before the attack on Midway. The Japanese didn't change their codes after the Battle of the Coral Sea. The intelligence in the Navy did an excellent job breaking the Japanese code, by convincing the Japanese that AF was having problems with their salt water condensers. AF was the Japanese code name for Midway island.
Enterprise, Yorktown, great carriers so tough.,what a battle!!
To be fair, all four carriers were involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku were all veterans of Pearl Harbor. The large amount of ships that the IJN fleet had was insignificant because we knew they were coming to Midway. The US Navy may have lost the USS Yorktown, but in exchange, the Japanese lost four frontline carriers to the SBD Dauntless dive bombers. The Combined Fleet, having lost the air power of the four carriers retreated and their Midway Invasion was halted, the diversion team at the Aleutian Islands near Alaska probably pulled back when they heard that the Midway invasion force was defeated.
As quoted in 'Midway' "This is for Pearl!"
Why are these American documentaries so cringey?
So sad they took down the full episodes 😭
I wish people today could appreciate the greatness of ordinary Americans in WW2.
0:45, true for the Pacific - however, the USN had 3 other operational fleet carriers on strength, and one recently commissioned on pre operational training. Could have been explained a bit better.
It wasn't even true for the Pacific. The entire U.S. pacific fleet did not go to Midway, there were two battleships and numerous cruisers, destroyers and subs protecting Hawaii. The Saratoga arrived in Hawaii the first fay of battle at Midway after re-fit and was under way toward Midway the next day with replenishment planes for the Enterprise and Hornet as well as its own complement. To say the Midway force was all that was left of the U.S. Navy was patently false, it wasn't nearly the total of the Pacific fleet alone, much less entire Navy.

My grandfather was on the Yorktown and swam to the enterprise
My great uncle was a machinist mate on the Yorktown... He made it out alive.
They weren’t near each other though... Yorktown survivors were picked up by the support ships of Task Force 17. Enterprise and Hornet were with TF-16 further away.

HISTORY From June 4 to June 7, 2017; It’s the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway.
*when someone heard Saratoga, Ranger, wasp*
*when they were told they can’t get to the battle*
You just awoken Uncle Sam!!
Something I don't think is widely known is that the Japanese plan for Midway was based on the assumption that "Bull" Halsey was going to be in command of the American carriers and would charge blindly into their ambush. Halsey, though, was in the hospital with a stress induced skin disorder, so Admirals Fletcher and Spruance actually led the fleet. The Japanese also didn't take into account that the Yorktown, which had been heavily damaged at Coral Sea, could be hastily (3 days) patched up enough to be sent back out to fight.
Arbeedubya None of that would have really mattered if the IJN decided to bring in a 5th carrier the Zuikaku and then use the two smaller aircraft carriers the Ryūhō and Jun’yō that they sent to the Aleutians. This would have added in an additional 150 aircraft.
They would had also added in 3 cruisers and 5 destroyers. Imagine this strike force heading south directly where the US carriers were.
The IJN could have also brought in more battleships instead of hanging back and bombard Midway island and thus would have eliminated the need for so many land based bombers.
F430 Ferrari well yeah, if they brought every single ship in the eastern half of the Pacific to bear they might have won. But that’s not how you allocate resources, especially when your enemy is stretched thin as it is. They seriously miscalculated the position of the American carriers, but they thought they’d be facing two at most, and that’s if they didn’t go after the bait when they bombed Dutch Harbor.
@@Frost770 Not sure where you are coming from. If you had 30 guys in your gang and your opponent had 5 (including their leader at the time)...you would "allocate" your resources by only sending 5 or 6 guys?
I would bring all 30 if I knew it meant it would eliminate their leader.
The IJN had a 7-0 battleship advantage but never did make use of any of this advantage. The IJN used 2 battleships in Midway and they were used more for anti aircraft attack which was really not their specialty either.
Would have been interesting if 5 battleships went to Midway and shelled the island after the initial bombing run.
In reality...none of the other areas matter as a priority so long as the IJN eliminated the US carriers. So the IJN simply should have thrown the majority of their vessels into this attack. They should have even went vessel to vessel. There is no way the USN could have kept up with the sheer numbers.
"Wounding" the US carriers where they could only to 15-20 would have ensured that they couldn't outrun the faster IJN vessels.
The USN simply didn't have enough planes to deal with so many enemy vessels during Midway.
IJN should have brought the Zuikaku and not attack the Aleutians.
This has nothing to do with hindsight. It's simply a matter of sound strategy when you have such an overwhelming advantage in vessels.
@@f430ferrari5 So according to that theory, Japan should not have attacked Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines, they should have just sent everything to Hawaii?
If I have a gang of 30 and I'm facing 5, I don't need to bring 30 when I can have them out, contributing in other ways. Allocating 100% of your resources at one target at a time is a poor strategy.
Why did the Americans divide their forces into an island hopping campaign as well as liberating the Philippines? That's the exact same strategy.
@@Frost770 No no no. They had a sizeable force sitting 300 miles back of Midway. That is where Yamamoto was. In addition, the Zuikaku was left back at home.
A pretty big force was sent to the Aleutians either.
You really didn't answer my point either related to "allocating" 30 guys to fight 5.
it's kind of like this also....your battleships are like bats but you heard 2 of 5 guys had guns but no bats so you decided to have your 10 guys or whatever without bats.
Face it. The IJN failed to utilize the assets they had an advantage in.
Number of personnel might have been nearly 2:1, but it's really the aircraft that are doing the bulk of the fighting, plus having broken the Japanese code, they had the clear advantage in intelligence information.
It all came down to locating your enemy first although Japan could of assumed air attacks where on there way and had 1 aircraft just providing 24 hr air support as cover. It's best to assume your enemy knows your intention and where you are.
what happened to the full video?
Why do History channel documentarys always seem so cheap?
maybe because it doesn't have a lot of money
Because most people would rather watch mind numbing stuff like Keeping up with the Kardashians. So these programs do not get a lot of money.
it's sad that people are more interested in the Kardashians than History, very sad.
It is really sad. Look at British or German productions, they got money.
And History Channel has money. Look at Vikings!
yup.
If you want a better understanding of what happened at the Battle of Midway, I highly recommend watching 'The Battle of Midway told from the Japanese perspective'. That amateur video outdoes anything else I've seen anywhere.
I recommend 2 sources for perusal - "Shattered Sword" Parshall and Tully, and 'The Battle of Midway' ( Japanese and American viewpoint) animation by Montemayor. "Shattered Sword is 600? pages and very detailed, the latter is concise and accurate. Regards, Dave C

woooow
you guys totally and utterly left the Hornet out of this story.
Man, I have such little hope for the upcoming Roland Emmerich film about this event.
While Rear Adm. Ray Spruance's USS Enterprise mounted the counterstrike against the Japanese Fleet, Adm. Frank Fletcher's USS Yorktown was actually the flagship, with Fletcher in overall command.
*"Kantai Collection: Episode 12.5"*
ayy lmao
At the end of Kantai, it turned out the way Yamamoto planned it. But the General Staff had taken 3 carriers to clear the way for the Army to take Port Moresby, and they were all too damaged to go with him. Same for the northern carrier that was there as bait, instead of being with him at Midway. Consider what would have happened if the IJN had had only two more carriers there......

Didn’t the Yorktown Planes realize they have an airstrip on Midway like seriously?
Aadharsh Ram The Island was bombed, the runway was probably destroyed. Midway isn’t that big of an island.
@@onefadedgunner3281 Actually, the runways were still intact. That's one of the reasons that the Japanese decided a second strike on the base was needed, which ended up causing all sorts of problems for Nagumo.
Anyhow, the orphaned Yorktown planes had options. They could have gone to Midway, of course, but the decks of Enterprise were probably closer by that point. Plus it would be easier to participate in the counter-attack if they remained with the fleet - which they did. Fourteen Yorktown dive bombers joined the attack that resulted in the destruction of Hiryū, the remaining Japanese fleet carrier in the battle.
Midway was cratered the only place to land was Big E or in the ocean.
My uncle served our country, i think he was in the army or the marines I can't remember which.

We’re watching battle 360
Imagine how it would feel if ur enemy used ur flag as an aiming target...
Just drop by here after watching midway, 2024 anyone?
I just noticed that Japan has 4 aircraft carriers (Soryu, Hiryu, Kaga, Akagi) and had 248 carrier-based aircrafts and to find it out: 248 : 4 = 62 so each Japanese aircraft carriers carries 62 aircrafts (maybe)
On average. Some carried a few more, some a few less. If memory serves, Akagi's airgroup was the largest at 68. Notice, though, the American carriers had more aircraft per carrier, at 73 each, on average. However, only Enterprise carried a full airgroup (about 80 aircraft).
I Made Aditya Wijaya to be more precise:
1. Akagi and Kaga 91 planes each capacity.
2. Soryu and Hiryu 72 and 73 plane capacity.
3. Zuikaku and Shokaku 82 plane capacity.
For Midway, they definitely brought less for each of the 4 carriers and of course they didn’t bring their two other carriers
Drink up every time he says USS Enterprise
I thought it was a world of warships ad at the beginning
These look like scenes from the game Battle stations Midway, did they take it directly from it?

How do they even develop hate for the Americans? They started all of it..looking out at those 3 burning carriers he must’ve felt a well deserved shame (probably for all the wrong reasons)
And it's not only 3,000 dead, it was 3,000 highly trained aircraft technicians. 3,000 infantry, no problem. But losing all those technicians had to have hurt.
the navy" is that how the old navy were named??
after the Battle of midway
Midway happens when your zerg rush fails.
They didn't talk about nagumo's indecision regarding changing the bombs/torpedoes of the bombers, the squadrons of TBD devastators which were decimated by zeroes and AA fire, only to clear the skies for the SBDs to destroy the carriers. Props for talking about actually history though
If you read the book Shattered Sword you'd see that in fact the Japanese fleet air cover was back at altitude when the SBDs showed up. They just dove past them.
Also attacking the island was a huge mistake and wasted resources. Personally you would want to get real close to it and hammer it with battle ships etc and crack it like an egg then send a few land units provided by small air cover. Keep your carriers on the ready for counter carrier attacks as Japan held the cards have your aircraft up on rotation. Japan lost that battle with massive odds of success. Also USA knew their location from the start.
James Luckhurst good points. It seems though the US knew the IJN was going to attack Midway but they didn’t know exactly from where.
I would agree that if the IJN brought their battleships and started to shell Midway the outcome may have been different.
It would have been very tempting for the US planes to attack the IJN battleships.

Midway this was an important battle. In this battle Big E beats the odds and sank the Japanese Fleet but it came at a cost The Japanese sank Yorktown and heavy cruiser Hammann and all six ships would remain down there until Vulcan Exploration found them in 1998 and in 2019. So far only Yorktown, Hammann, Kaga, and Akagi have been found Soryu and Hiryu are still down there but we will find them and Midway will be made an international shrine.
Hammann was a destroyer.
