Eldon was a major division point on the Rock Island, where the Mid-Continent and Chicago-Tucumcari lines crossed the K-D line. The locomotive facilities during the steam era was one of biggest on the railroad!
That pit u call the snake pit that is the roll over inseption pit as the train is put to geter or comes in 1 or 2 guys will be under there as the train rolls slow over them they will have a light a bucket of white paint any thing that needs repair on that car they will mark the wheel by slaping paint on the wheel then that car will be set out looked over and fixed there's a guy from my city that works for the BNSF here that donate his time there he donated his time to do the signals on the other side of the river he changes the color from time to time he donated the radio for the engine don't know if they got the radio wired up as they had planned I'm here in Galesburg il I used to live 50 miles south of eldon up to 4 years ago Iade my last tripe to see that engine 4 in a half years ago cause I knew I wasn't going to come back there my health won't let me drive that far now there r very few pic of that yard around
They had a 3 stall round house there the deep inseption pit is to the north I lived in Fort Madison Ia for 30 years been there meany times the last time was right before i moved to my home state of Il 7 years ago
The pile of rock is were they dumped the fire box before they took the engine in to work on it the large tank was eather a boiler or air tank for the retarders as far as the main line it went by the old tower if u come from the road side it ran along the road 2 tracks the sand track was over by the road that building u eere in it is by the deep inseption track I have been there 5 times u r finding things I missed lol
That is the K D line of the Rock on the other side of the river was the new rail yard it went back to the owner after the RR went under I have ment him it jad been in his family for over 100 years been to that farm meanytimes talked to him most times the gates are locked

My other memory of Eldon is the snakes! The "blue racers" are non-venomous, but they are very agressive... they can really move and WILL chase you!!!
Rock Island was before my time on the RR but I always liked their final blue graphics. Once a very important RR with a lot of history.

Usually sand facilities consist of a "tower" so the sand can be loaded down into locomotives for traction. The one there must be gone

That place was large and busy it has been about 25
Years since I'd been there there was meany buildings there
