On Decoration Day (Memorial Day), the old Civil War veteran Colonel Lawrence is left home alone by his family, who feel he is too old to come to the parade. Only his loving granddaughter returns home to keep him company.
When the rest of the family is out, the local Decoration Day committee comes by, wishing to honour him in the parade in recognition of his heroic past. Only when they see the public tribute, his family realise they have neglected a Civil War hero.
