Quarry was only granted a boxing license due to a loophole in Colorado licensing rules. No other state would grant him a license to fight due to obvious mental decline. This was legalized manslaughter. Very sad.

Quarry was basically finished 17 years earlier when he was pummeled by Ken Norton. He retired for 2 years, returned and then needed a late KO to overcome fringe contender Lorenzo Zanon in 1977. Quarry again retired after that fight, acknowledging that he no longer had it. But the lure of money drew him to this 1992 bout with journeyman Cranmer. Seven years later, Quarry was dead, a victim of dementia pugilistica.

@@garychapman4294 agree. Even with the KO win, Quarry again retired after that fight. For about 6 years. He knew that he didn't have it anymore and was fortunate to catch up to and stop the chinless Zanon. But the lure of money can lead to tragedy.

I’m the guy that fought him. He had his faculties about him before this fight. He was getting ready for a big payday with Foreman.
I used old-school techniques.... kept my head in his chest, kept my chin tucked in behind my gloves, blocked most of his uppercuts, slipped many of his hooks, knew he was champion so I trained in the mountains and knew I had to constantly keeping punching every round. He had a hard left hook, left my right side with a 12” diameter solid black bruise.
He gave me a great compliment after the fight in his room.... said no one in his career threw as many punches round after round at him as I did.
He was a great fighter. RIP JQ...

Quarry may have lost that fight but earned respect for boxing skills he displayed which characterised heavyweights of his time, the golden era.He also my have not won a title fight but truth be told, he is the one of those that made Marciano think twice about his planned return to the boxing ring. The Rock,as great as he was would never had had a chance against those heavyweights let alone that ended being world champions.(2021.08.20-04:10)

Marciano was a bit like Tyson. He was great but he had the good fortune to fight a pretty weak division.
Old Joe Louis, Old Joe Walcott x2 . Aging Ezzard Charles x2, Ancient Archie Moore and Don Cockell.

Unfortunately Quarry (like many other top HW's) Wanted to copy Foreman's comeback and saw the money he was making, and thought they could do the same. But Foreman was lucky in that he didn't have too many hard battles so he was able to compete into his 40's. Quarry on the other hand had so many brutal battles it finally caught up with him. Same thing with Earnie Shavers.

First of all, thank you very much for finding this footage. I really appreciate and all true boxing fans (not casuals) should appreciate it as well. George Foreman did have hard battles and plenty of them as well. His eyes ballooned in his fight with Alex Steward, plus heavy handed fighters like Tommy Morrison and Shannon Briggs landed on him plenty of times. His eyes ballooned again in the Axel Schulz fight. But Foreman is blessed with a hard head (extra thick layer of skull bone). And people like Bernard Hopkins and UFC’s Randy Couture also fight really well into their 40s by outsmarting their opponents and training year round to stay in shape. Fighters who are lazy off season suffer. Foreman showed better defence with his Archie Moore cross arm guard.
In regards to Jerry Quarry, the man did great against contenders like Mac Foster, Floyd Patterson (a former champion at that point), Buster Mathis, Earnie Shavers and Ron Lyle. But he also lost to contenders like George Chuvalo and Jimmy Ellis. I wish Quarry would have brawled with Ali and boxed with Frazier, instead of the other way around. Other contenders like Ron Lyle also tried to copy the George Foreman formula, but “Big” George is an outlier I guess.
