Thanks for sharing your progress and process! One thing I’m noticing in the footage you showed of Katamari is that their camera angle is a lot higher up than the current wire framed camera angle. That restricts a lot of the field of view a lot more and contributes to that sense of growth and surprise when you zoom out more.
Intresting game, reminds me of Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack (same idea but 2D). The cardbox idea is good imo, it can helps a lot with optimalization as the cardbox will act as a ocluder. Once you reach a specific size you can load the next stage and just animate out the barrier walls.
