Episode 89
Is this the MOST under rated game on the NES?
It's an exciting adventure game with TONS of different gameplay modes. You'll "run and gun" like in Contra, explore dungeons like in The Legend of Zelda, and you'll even experience 3D gun fights like in Lethal Enforcers! Out of all the officially licensed games released in North America, you'd be hard pressed to find a better game that fewer people played.
This game was even made by Konami, one of the premier developers for the NES. You'd think that with so much going for this game that it would have been a sure hit, but instead it destined for obscurity. So what went wrong? In this week's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* The important steps to finish EVERY MISSION! You'll know EXACTLY what you need to do to advance the story.
* PASSWORDS for every mission, plus a SECRET PASSWORD that will give you a huge advantage!
* Strategies for getting TONS of money, so you'll always have the best gun and plenty of ammo!
* A secret TRICK to SKIP one of the game's levels!
* Strategies to complete these missions using either the controller or Zapper light gun!
* The secret to the PLATFORMING STAGES - How to make those long jumps!
* The BEST strategies for EVERY BOSS, even BUTCH CAVENDISH himself... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Ahh yes, ninjas. One of the Lone Ranger's most frequent and dangerous foes. Couldn't swing a dead cat in the old west without hitting a ninja.
Seriously, I do like the combination of side-scrolling shoot-em-up stages, top down adventure stages, first person adventure stages and shooting gallery stages. I would have loved to see something like this on the SNES or PS1.
Ever played either the arcade or NES version of _Gun.Smoke_ by Capcom? It was a cowboy-themed shmup that had ninjas in the game as well.
@@Loader2K1 Syd Lexia once said "Superfluous ninjas are a telltale sign of a cheesy video game"
I was probably the target audience for this, as I have always loved Westerns. I was born in '85 and grew up watching John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Charles Bronson shooting up 'the bad guys' almost on a daily basis, and while I never owned this game as a kid I sure rented it a lot. I actually believe it was in part inspied by the 1981 film "The Legend of the Lone Ranger", which was one of several movies I watched incessantly, a box office flop starring Klinton Spilsbury. Butch Cavendish was the villain there as well (played superbly by Christopher Lloyd) and part of his plot involves kidnapping President Grant. In no other Lone Ranger media can I find a reference to that, which is what leads me to believe this was based on that. Why they would use a failed movie from ten years before as a partial basis for a video game I don't know, but there it is.
I was just myself musing on why these things were coming back into the public pop culture radar. I'm betting Batman 1989 had a lot to do with it but that may have just been another symptom. I may be misremembering the timeline but it seems like these games and movies bringing back those old properties was before TV Land and Nick At Night. So what was it? Just nostalgia?
Born ‘79, wasn’t super into Westerns but 10 times out of 10 when I would visit or stay over at my grandparents when I was a kid my grandfather would watch them, and I did enjoy them.
@@CeeJayThe13th Nick At Nite started in 1985 and The Lone Ranger was one of their more popular shows up into the early 90s, so maybe someone somewhere thought that the ratings justified making a video game? Or that maybe "Cowboys and Indians" was still popular enough among young boys to warrant a Western video game and they thought a big name license would help it sell. I don't know.
@@KamenRiderGumo well, it's hard to imagine that Nick At Nite is actually (slightly) older than me lol. I'm sure that figured into some of the stuff.
@@KamenRiderGumo there was a cartoon as well, so it was probably based on that
You hold a candle for this game the same way I do for Golgo-13. Viva obscure NES licensed games!
Hands down, my favorite game Konami published on the NES. I know that's saying a lot given their output, but seriously, if you haven't played it, please do. I picked it up Complete In Box about 4 years ago, and I've been kicking myself for this not being a part of my childhood ever since. Thank you for bringing attention to this highly underrated game that deserves to be mentioned alongside the greats.
I remember it being a fun game 🎮 for sure 😎
Yeah, this awesome game must have slipped under my radar when it was released at the time. It would have definitely been one of my favorites.
Id never heard of this one tbh :( looks fun though
Halfway thru the video and realized this needs chapters or at least timestamps:
0:00 intro song
0:06 background of the game
5:37 PUPPIES/AALLLLRRRIGGGHT and pre walkthrough game stuffs (secret code)
6:43 Start game.. mission 1: seeking silver
17:22 Mission 2: treasure hunt
29:58 Mission 3. three outlaws
46:02 Mission 4. The imposter
55:30 Mission 5. Chiefs trial
1:06:32 Mission 6. Rescue Clara
1:24:36 mission 7. Cavalry camp
1:37:58 mission 8. The final battle
1:52:00 ish. Final boss for those looking for just that
1:53:00 and that’s that. We beat the came. Cheesy ending. Woo.
Time to go back and watch it now
Lol@ puppies. Good call
@@ggbetz had to ;)
The Konami intro that always comes to mind is the SNES one
You knew, when you saw that intro (and the Capcom one) you were in for a treat!
Butch Cavendish : What is a man but a miserable pile of silver bullets? But enough talk, have at you!
Lone Ranger : *shoots Butch right between the eyes* Die monster! You don't belong in this world!
The Konami and Capcom jingles, as well as SEEEEEEEEEEEEEYGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, and the Playstation startup tune.
Nintendo: *coin*
Not sure how I could of been a child and not know this game existed. And for NES looks amazing. How did I never know of this game?
This honestly made my day. I spent a lot of time with my octogenarian grandparents as a kid so I was the weirdo who knew about the Lone Ranger (fun fact, canonically he's related to the Green Hornet). Anyway, I played this game so much as a kid and seeing it again brought back all the good feels.
I'm wondering how many NES games were based on the old radio plays, early black and white shows, old comics, and all those things like or at least based on newer properties based on that old stuff and why those things were so prevalent in pop culture at the time.
Off the top of my head, I can think of Lone Ranger (of course), Gunsmoke (which wasn't based on the show but obviously wanted the name recognition), Fester's Quest (which is loosely based on the original Addams Family show (I think)), Dick Tracy (based on the new movie at the time but also influenced by the strips and radio plays), and it seems like The Phantom and The Shadow also got games but I may be missing that. Of course, Batman and Superman. I'm sure there's some I'm missing.
There's also games based on stuff inspired by those like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Darkman. Dracula sort of. Monsters In My Pocket. Depending on how far you wanna push it.
I don't think there was a Green Hornet NES but there could have and probably should have been. That makes me wonder how many cool games based on old stuff that we missed out on and how many of them might have been in development. I would definitely have been interested in Green Hornet, The Shadow, The Phantom if we didn't get those.
I'm kinda wanting to dig through a ROM list and see which games are for sure based on those old properties.
@@CeeJayThe13th 3 stooges and Gilligan's Island come to mind l, along with Flintstones (1st season was black & white+ sold Winston cigarettes) and Asterix and Obelisk, and mickey mouse as well
@@ggbetz I had forgotten most of those! I did think of Gilligan's Island though lol.
It's kinda hard to count Batman, Superman, Mickey Mouse, the Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, and things like that since they hardly ever went away and most of the games would be based on the newer projects in those franchises but they're at least worth a mention!
@@CeeJayThe13th felix the cat also comes to mind, but good point.
@@ggbetz Felix the Cat for the NES had only one single flaw: its release date. If it was released in 1989 or 1990 it would be fondly remembered instead of being known as an obscure cult classic. It got buried in the 16-bit era because it came out in '92 - and the newer consoles were front and centre.
My dad would've loved this game back in the day. He was a big NES and western guy.
Finally this game is getting a real episode from a pro. Thanks!!!
Thanks for letting me relive my weekends as a kid again.
This is my new weekend morning cartoons.
I remember playing this for hours in my cousin's basement...ah Nostalgia
Oh I know of this game. I played it as a kid and loved it. This game is awesome. I have seen playthroughs of this game where some of the players used the zapper and the zapper is indeed easier.
What an absolute GEM of a creator! Funny as all! Laughing and enjoying. Thank you.
Even if I have beat the game you're playing, I still watch for your amazing commentary... keep doing what you are doing...
I love this channel, there are games I never knew existed....thank you for all of your work....cute dogs too
i used to play such games in my childhood, but now its all apex legend and valo! thanks to you, my interest is back and i just completed rainbow silkroad and many more to go!
Love you Brother.
may you live longer then all of us to tell our story
Wow, I forgot about that one. My grandmother got me that game on clearance at a toy store that was going out of business. I never really played it until I was older.
I HAVE played this game when it first came out, and loved it. I was playing just about anything from Konami during the NES/SNES days as they were awesome. The license did hurt, I think, to some degree, but it's a well polished and fun and challenging game.
Also, I believe U Can Beat Video Games showed the picture of the wrong President. While there's no way to know for sure, since the game just says it takes place in the 'early 1880's', let's assume that covers the period from 1880 to 1883. Chester A. Arthur was President for most of that time block (1881 to 1885).
The writing and editing in this intro is your best work yet. Hilarious. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Doc! I'm hurt!" "Did you kill 10 men yet?"
i love when he played that clip of wilfred brimley for that lone ranger fact lol
The lone ranger was actually kinda big in the late 70s early 80s. Filmation had a cartoon and there was a movie as well as toys from gabriel
What's up U Can Beat Video Games! Even though it's Sunday, I still appreciate your hard work you provide! All of these notorious games that where a great challenge, you make them look easy with guidance. Thank you
Awww yeah!! Love this game!! Highly underrated gem! I'm glad you gave it the attention and praise it deserves!
I remember reading about this on Nintendo Power and I was so curious to play it, but I never saw it in stores.
I remember playing this game a shit ton in grade school. No matter how many times I tried, I couldn't beat it. I had such a hard time figuring out where to go.
“Nothing makes you feel more like a cowboy than a head mounted laser cannon.” Hahahahahahaha… best thing I have heard in a long time!!!
I never heard of this game. It looks really awesome. I hope that one day Konami takes a chance and ports it to modern machines (PC included).
Also, the Tonto portrait looks like Owen Wilson.
Wow, I never knew Konami made a fine game for the NES like this
Excellent intro. And a cute new puppy! The videos keep getting better and better.
Thanks!!
49:35 oh man, I didn't know the NES could do day-for-night!
Would definitely like to see a robin hood prince of thieves walkthrough, such a great game
What if I told you : I have been wanting to beat this game forever now.
It took me years to beat it.
When I finally did, it was so satisfying.
Looking back, it's the most fun I got out of a single NES game.
Never played this one as a kid, but I was still transfixed the entire episode just cause the presentation is so well done. This game looks fun though! Star Tropics mixed with Duck Hunt, in the Wild West lol.
this channel is so relaxing to me. keep up the good work. I never even heard of this nes game back in the day.
I'm italian and I played this game in my early teenage years. Me and my brother we used to make a lot of jokes about the name Tonto because in italian it means "imbecile, stupid". 😁
DUDE! This looks AWESOME!!!!
Watching your channel has shown me that I missed a lot of great NES games as a kid. This looks really cool.
You can tell this game was programmed with passion from the developers. Well polished on lot of different gameplay styles, and Konami love the cowboy era!!! Konami has done many far west influenced games in the past where the most famous is ofc sunset riders, but let’s not forget other attempts like Iron Horse (arcade), Tiny Toon stage 2 snes, TMNT turtles in time the train stage… yeah Konami loves trains!!!
This game is awesome . Never played it before.. on my nes wish list for sure
Man, your videos are great! Thanks for all the hard work beating these old games. WE need some Dragon Quest 3 action, the RPG videos are definitely my favorite ones!
Silently had to willed this into being This past week, I've watched others play this for the most part. This is a good game and wish I could play the darn thing.
My favorite game on the NES! Finally, someone else who appreciates it.
It's only really fun with a light gun though, using the controller on shooting galleries isn't great.
This was a rental for me. Game is dope as hell. SO much variety. Came so close to finishing it.
I love these games that comprises diverse types of gameplay
The Lone Ranger game. It's like a mish-mash of Metal Gear, Adventures of Bayou Billy, and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. What a great game.
This is a very impressive looking NES game..you can tell it's a later title...multiple styles done pretty well, good music, and there's even parallax scrolling! Yea I wish I woulda known about this growing up I would have loved it. Another stellar video sir. Freaking love this channel...
Thanks! I didnt know about this one when I was a kid either - could have easily been one of my favorites growing up if I had known about it back then
I accidentally bought this game because I thought it was Gun.Smoke. I was really disappointed at first but it became one of my favorite NES games.
I'm currently working my way through this, but it's a fascinating game to see. I had heard of it once or twice, but I have not heard much about it and never really heard it was good. It's nice that there are still some good titles to discover from then. I agree with your assessment on why this one was missed by so many. I know when I was a kid in those days, the Lone Ranger wasn't very interesting to me as a property and I only knew about it through references in other things. The Lone Ranger seemed so old fashioned. Plus, I wasn't very interested in westerns until I was 10 or 11. At that point, I became the weird kid who'd say something like "Hey, fellow kids. Did anyone catch Bonanza over the weekend?" Bonanza was on before wrestling, so that's what got me. I still don't think The Lone Ranger would have interested me after that. But it does look like a cool game and I'll have to try it out and murder people(virtually) for big money. Fun commentary as well.
I guess you didn't want to mention Arnie hammer he's a vampire
So cooool! I'm going to play this soon!
It's 800 miles between Carson City and Tucson and 900 miles between Tucson and Dodge City (the one in Kansas, there's also one in Alabama, and that's 1600 miles away). Why does the Lone Ranger even need a horse if he can traverse those distances on foot so quickly?
Might be overthinking things just a bit, but pretty funny
3:44 - Amazing that you could find so many stock photos that feature NES The Lone Ranger game! :D
I absolutely love this game
This guide'll come in handy the next time I play!
Actually, this game was loosely based on the 1981 Legend of the Lone Ranger film with elements of the TV series. [in that film, Butch is played by Christopher Lloyd]
Because that film never achieved that sort of box office success, it might have contributed to the Lone Ranger slinking away into obscurity. [hence another reason possibly why this game has been overshadowed by other Konami titles]
The overhead segments [especially those you encounter on the overworld] make me think of Bionic Commando's overhead battles. Another comparison one could make for the sidescrolling sections would be Rolling Thunder or Shinobi.
And definitely this game is underrated as heck! I got it as a birthday gift in 2013 alongside Revenge of Shinobi.
If you need to run around a corner with an enemy and don't want to be shot, you can wait for them to reload. After every six shots they get in a crouching position and you can rush them
"We don't want to spend our money on the doctor, we need to go silence it at the gunshop" wow, I guess some things never change
This game looks like a gameplay mixture of _The Adventures of Bayou Billy_ , _Snake's Revenge_ , and Konami's 1990 NES adaptation of _Mission: Impossible_ to me.
Never played this game but still awesome to. Watch!
This game is in my top 3 for the NES
Also 99% sure you start with the short barrel if you just cycle through weapons with select at the start of the game
Watch out for those man-eatin' jackrabbits, and those killer cacti.... Heyyy Duuuuuude~
I knew people would remember Hey Dude
The reason not many have played this game or even know about it is because SNES dropped in 1990. This game was made in 1991. Contra Force is another hidden gem that came out for NES after SNES already dropped.
The level with the train was paid homage to in the SNES game Buster Busts Loose, also by Konami. Pretty cool!
These are the video equivalent of those old Perfect brand of guides.
As a native Texan, I love seeing the town names, but the geography cracks me up. For example, Brownsville is the southernmost city in Texas (right on the Mexican border), and Abilene is in the far north in the panhandle. The fact that they’re anywhere close to each other in this game is funny to me.
He lost his Horse because the plot demanded it. He lost his gun because he is a fool.
Lots of the gameplay reminds me of bayou billy crossed with simons quest.
I got my 45 Colt loaded, my NES plugged in and my cowboy hat on for this one
Kinda sus
@@merk40tharealest13 why nerd, there is literally a 45 Colt bullet in the thumbnail of the video
@@carlrygwelski586 you mean to tell me, yo GROWN ASS out here wearing cowboy boots, and hat with a toy gun next to you, to play NES... you got the horse head on a stick too bro?
0:48 well, I don't think I knew 678 was the count for official NES games. That seems somewhat convenient.
After watching the video, I tried this one and it's really good as you say. There are a few things I'd change to make it better. Some of the boss patterns are too simple, for example. But this game is less about boss fights than it is about the general stages so it's not a huge thing. I didn't catch it in the video, but I noticed that you can also pick up the TNT and throw it back at the enemies. Nice touch! While it could get annoying due to losing track of bullets, I did like the idea of having to reload.
I know Konami already tried making games with multiple play styles, and it wasn't alone, I wonder if it was a trend in 1991. In addition to this, I can think of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, and Vice Project Doom also doing it.
Shooter portion reminds me very much of Lethal Enforcers 2: Gun Fighters! On Sega Genesis. I absolutely loved that game. I wish you’d do Sega content as often as Nintendo. Still gonna watch regardless, just making a request....
nice Roy rogers quotes at the end
I spent so long on this game when I was younger... ended up stuck at one point and literally could not figure out how to proceed.
I rember glancing at it on rent day and like he said I passed by cause of the name and missed a great game
Naturally, it's a great video, and for a game I never woulda thought was so good. Everybody is saying that though. So I wanna ask something. Did anybody else kinda chuckle at how he pronounced San Jacinto in this video at 1:17:27 ?
Yeah, no 80's kid was asking for a Lone Ranger game. They must've been banking on clueless parents seeing it in the store "Hey, I recognize that..." and buying it for their kid. That's how I ended up with Little Nemo haha.
Little Nemo was a quality game also! ♡♡
i just checked the inflation calculator and lone ranger was paying 290$ per bullet, maybe he had a grenade revolver 🤣
Hey Dude! Thanks for another fun video.
I always look forward to ur videos bro there always so well made
I still own this cartridge and to date I was never able ot beat the final boss. The train was just too much. But as for the rest of the bosses I had the timing down to take advantage of them coming out the invincibility frame and lock them into death.
The last boss is no joke. But pretty doable with practice.
That moment when you realise that the Church Stage is a Castlevania re-skin. Even the jump and stairs animations are the same
34:25 - "keep murdering this guy for his heart." Sounds like he's an organ donor!
I was so excited for this game, it looked decent and I remember it being kinda fun, slightly janky. Let me paint a scene for you.. the family is gone on a friday night, its me, TGIF, a microwave HUNGRY MAN DINNER or whatever, and the Lone Ranger after I enjoy some HILARIOUS chuckles from that Urkel kid... ahh....
46:05 I can't stop laughing with the old west messed up priorities.
I have never heard of this game but it seems like I really missed out not playing it back in the day. Like a mix of castlevania and zelda.
Super excited for this one.
The country code for Japan is 81 and the number of digits checks out, that password might be Konami's support phone number or something at the time or something.
If this game earns such high praise from you, I'll be sure to check it out!
bout to download this on my Romstation....I've heard of it and read about it in magazines, but never played it and I forgot about it.
"This guy had the right idea! He wore the brown pants!"
Even having complete romsets on every console and pc since ps2 time I have never played this game. Not to mention that I would laugh every time that I read the title. So yeah, definitely it's due to the name of the game since I have beaten almost every other nes game.
Exactly! Like, "Lone Ranger, that has to be awful"
I played the game on a rental. I did see a cart but never picked it up when it was dirt cheap. I was stupid.
“Interact with the townspeople,” he says as he’s shooting people in a town
You’re right, this game couldn’t appeal to anyone under the age of 600 when it came out. It’s unfortunate because it looks like a pretty good game
When I started the game. The Lone Ranger already had a gun and bullets for some reason
He always does. This guy made a very silly mistake.
The game looks like a combination of Gun.Smoke (but with Final Fantasy style exploration), Sunset Riders (but with only one plane of interaction), and Lethal Enforcers 2 (with a bit of Blood Bros.). Or maybe I should have said the western sections of Day Dreamin' Davey instead of Final Fantasy to keep the western theme. I suppose I could have also mentioned it for the FPS style sections along with Lethal Enforcers 2.
Underrated and hard to get
1:50:02 Jimmy and Bimmy would like a word.
Apparent;y someone at Konami missed the memo that The Lone Ranger never shot to kill only to wound.
They also missed that The Lone Ranger only used silver bullets, apparently Konomi has never seen a single episode of The Lone Ranger
@@chuckhackett4493 They used Silver Bullets as a power-up instead of the only weapon, kind of like the Sunsoft Genesis Batman that's a good game but technically features the non-lethal Dark Detective exterminating the Joker's entire gang, a regular crew in the 1989 movie that the game was based on but practically a paramilitary terrorist organization in the game equipped with armored personnel carriers!
It would explain the way the literal and figurative slap on the wrist penalty for shooting civilians works; I guess they're not dead, just wounded, so the Lone Ranger drops everything to rush them to the hospital (loses stamina in the form of health) and pays the hospital bill to make up for his error (loses money).
This game was my introduction to the Lone Ranger.
When I saw the "real" Lone Ranger, he told Tonto to sneak up behind armed bandits (who had killed townsfolks) and throw rocks at them "to knock them out." Because, despite being armed and skilled, he didn't want to potentially hurt the murderers.
This worked as well as you would expect, and Tonto was only alive due to the surprisingly good graces of the bandits.
I was so disgusted by this idiotic and pussified version of the LR I decided the Japanese variant was the real one for me. Don't care what anyone else says, I can pick.
