    Love your story!
I was a math major who worked in engineering my entire life.
I'm retired now but about 5 yrs ago I was going to a disco party and needed to make something to wear so I watched a UA-cam video and sewed a sequined dress, by hand, then got the bug to sew.
My 90 yr old mom gave me a 5 minute lesson on how to use a sewing machine and that was it. I was hooked. I think I enjoy figuring out the puzzle of sewing and it's always a great feeling to succeed at completing a pattern or task, and to learn more.
I'm learning so much from your videos and I've only watched for a week or so. Thx for all your time and effort to create these vlogs.

Your story, is inspiring, stories of how you learned and what you did to obtain the skills, is what people needs to bring back trades...
I was just having a conversation with my husband about the loss of skills, or trades and apprenticeship... I have learned more from the tips and tricks you give in your videos than most, the process the quick changes from the instructions and then the review at the end...
Thank you for the story of how you became you... 🥰

I went through a 3 year apprenticeship in Germany as a seamstress and became a tailor. I changed my career after about 10 years and am sewing/quilting for fun now. I am very impressed with you and love your videos. Some of the best things in live I learned on the go. I would never say ‘why don’t you know this’. I have tailor friends who don’t know things and I certainly don’t know everything. Live and learn, it’s not just a saying. It’s what live is all about. I watch your videos because I like them and sometimes a different way of doing things is even better, always interesting.

Thanks for telling your story. It doesn't surprise me how wonderfully you became a great seamstress. I love building things too and so did my sewing Mom. Now being retired I'm learning and figuring out how to sew and make things like you. I've always sewed but I'm becoming more daring and trying things I never thought I could make. I once worked in Upholstery, sewing and cutting out pieces for the Upholester and it has helped me learn and Reupholester sofas and chairs I find that are antique or have good structure. I have made my home very comfortable and cute. So happy to hear about you.🤗

    Hi Marie!
Thank you sooo much for uploading this video. This gives me so much hope for myself.
The biggest lesson I leaned from this vlog is patience. I need to take my time with reading instructions, with sewing the garment, with fitting the garment...
Also, I learned I need to “figure things out”. If I run into a sewing snag - I have to be patient and figure it out by reading the instructions over again or a book, or looking up directions on “UA-cam”, or by asking...
This vlog inspired me to continue sewing because it IS possible to create beautiful garments on my own even though I’ve never been properly trained.
By the way, I’d like to hear your story of how you decided to go to college for mechanical engineer. Did you get to make it your career, and if so, when/why did you stop.
Thank you sooo much for sharing!

That's the best way to learn. I have been sewing for most of my 70 years at 14 years.
l made an outfit for my sister's wedding. I make most of my own clothes and have sewn for family and friends. Occasionally taking on small commissions for other people through word
of mouth. I've never sewn anything I didn't enjoy, making it a little difficult to say NO🤣 occasionally. But l thank my clever mother for passing on her skills to me and am glad that the schools still taught sewing when I was young 😊 And yes I do enjoy the things you make🌻

Marie, I learned to sew in much the same way. My Dad found a treadle sewing machine in the basement where he worked, (wish I'd kept it!) and started making clothes for my dolls, then dresses for my neices, then clothes for myself. I put sewing aside in the business of life. My recent discovery of your videos has inspired me to dust off my machine, get into my fabric stash & get back to creativity & pleasure I used to enjoy. Thank you Marie!

what an inspiring video.! I was a hairstylist by trade my moms choice for me . and while i did enjoy my work sewing was my greatest love. Encouraged by a wonderful teacher at school who was patient and kind. when you mentioned you learned from books from the hard knock school, (getting things wrong and learning in the process.)At the end of the day is that not what you learn in education to read book to learn from those who have made mistakes but kept pursuing their love of what they want to accomplish either by teaching as you do well, i might add. You don't need a piece of paper or a plaque on a wall to prove what you can do you do what you do well and people respect your work because you take pride in what you do and then you help other's I'm 70 years old now and still love sewing and my dustbin could tell some tales over the years. oh dear did i mention i ramble a bit .Keep those videos coming i look forward to them all. lrene

I had to take Home Ec in 9th grade. I caught on quick and loved to sew so I got my first sewing machine for Christmas in 1971….a heavy White brand. I had it for over 20 years. I started sewing my own clothes in high school, made my first wedding’s bridesmaid and maid of honor dresses. I sew all my husband camp shirts too and sew all my window treatments and upholster things.

Whether you were formally or self taught, your sewing skills are impressive. Thanks for sharing your story. It's always fun to hear of other people's sewing journey. And to go from living in Los Angeles to a "bucolic life" on a rural Ohio farm - WOW! Don't think I could have done that. I was born, raised, and still live in San Diego. I recall a large fabric store not far from where I lived that I believe was a House of Fabrics. My mother took me there in middle school to buy some fabric for sewing class. I often wonder whatever became of that store. My first 2 jobs were in fabric stores in the late '70s. It was a requirement that you knew how to sew to help customers.

Your sewing journey and my sewing journey have a lot of similarities. I am self-taught. I sewed for friends in high school and in college I sewed for wedding and sweet 15 birthday dresses that were as elaborate as a wedding gown. After college I stop sewing until I got married and sewed my gown and the bridemaids gowns and I stop sewing for at lease 15-years because it was cheaper to buy clothes than to sew. Then in 1996 I stumble on a sewing blog and the rest is history. I found a big online sewing communty and you tube exploded with tons of sewing videos. Since 1996 I've learned a lot. I have an extensive sewing library both used and new book and an extensive fabric collection. Sewing is my sanity, I love it, and I get great results when I take the time to work on a garment or project. Thank you for sharing and for reminding me of how much I've grown in my sewing journey.

Sewing is soft construction engineering! ( i.e. How do you keep a strapless dress in place?) We must understand the properties of the materials in order to allow for movement or provide the correct underlying support. It requires being able to think through the construction, determining the order of steps needed to get what you want as a finished product. In high school, I tested highest aptitude in mechanical. But college was not in the cards, and 50 years ago the engineering fields were no where near as accepting of women as they are now. Like you, I have learned over time by trial and error, finding good information resources and shared experiences with other sewists. I just found your channel through Bob Fowler’s, and am looking forward to viewing what you have shared. 😊

Lovely to hear your background Marie....it honestly doesn't surprise me that you are self taught and I say that with the highest respect. The way you come across in your tutorials is that of someone who learned the hard way, and how you explain the process of how you would do certain things also implies that you have tried numerous other ways.
You have a presence of humble honesty, and clearly a clever, common sense that only comes from experience of life. Making mistakes in any form is the only way to learn, as long as you don't repeat those mistakes. I have learned loads from you and also found that you and I do things in a similar fashion. Nothing wrong in self taught, it's a talent not an impediment...carry on...you are doing great..much love and respect from me to you..❤️

😀💖 How is a mechanical engineer not a sewist! We all learn in different ways but attitude is really important. I went to school for sewing but since then with each job I've learned more and more. Your story is awesome and I'm so glad you found the courage to share it with us. 💗😊👍

Thank you for sharing your story. Be proud of who you are and what you've achieved - my goodness it's amazing!! My wife got me started on sewing and then the kind people of UA-cam educated me, folk like you. So, thank you very much indeed for being willing to share your hard earned skills. Greetings from a little market town in North Wales UK. 🙋‍♂🙋‍♂

I would think a whole lot of us are self taught. I can sew bags, quilts, garments home accessories and I learned by breaking my moms sewing machine every time I tried to use it as a kid/teen. That also taught me how to fix sewing machine problems or I couldn't sew anymore lol now I have a machine I probably can't fix but I am still breaking and am replacing parts I break lol maybe I should be more careful! I made my wedding dress too. 5 patterns/1 dress! Gorgeous! Hand beaded too. Forget teaching, oh I am a special ed teacher haha worked for a seamstress, can do alterations but don't! And upholstery too!

Hi Marie, loved hearing about your mindset! I love learning-by-doing and just figuring things out too but I have to admit that I heavily rely on video tutorials such as your wonderful sew along videos. 🥰 Looking forward to hearing the mechanical engineering story (I'm an engineer too, but in software!)

That's how I feel. Honestly, dio many times I would think of trying something new and see someone else do it. My mind would think, well I'm at least as smart as they are. If they can, then I can, and I just dived in... sometimes it got exciting 😁☺️

Thank you so much for sharing your sewing history. You make such wonderful one of a kind garments that reflect you. Your story is an inspiration to this sewing community. As individuals we too can make our garments with whatever skill we have attained so far, have them reflect us and inspire others to do the same. Not sure people would still feel that confidence if you had been formally trained.

Thank you! I think you're right. I think without the qualification labels after our names, it easier to be just "one of us" in the sewing community. And still, always learning 😊

I love that you are self taught. I took home ec in high school and various workshops along the way and made clothes for myself and children because it was cheaper to sew it myself. Now not as much but I love the creative process.

Oh wow, we could be sisters from another mother lol. I just turned 60 this last September and I have the same mindset as you. Taught myself to sew first my kids baby clothes then eventually ball gowns for our military formal balls. I believe if there's something you want to do, do it. Haven5 quite built a house but I've helped build one, also built a deck lol. Jack of all trades. I'm just now getting back into garment sewing after doing nothing but quilting for 20 plus years, I love your videos and find them very informative. Oh, I also use and love my vintage sewing machines, my favorite is my singer 1200 (201-2 in an electric treadle). Also live on a farm in Oregon, blueberries

I appreciate your story which mirrors my own, except I had the benefit of a couple years of 4H at age 11 & 12 and Jr. high home economics. So many sewers I’ve watched are absolutely “stuck” in beginners mode for years bc they resist the task of”figuring it out”. As with everything, curiosity and need pave the way for expertise. Thanks for sharing your story.

Like you I taught myself to the point of taking garments apart to figure them out. I learned from books as there wasn't even a mobile phone back then. I have since learned I approach a garment basics the same way as Saville. How surprised was I. You are a very talented lady and I totally enjoy sewing with you. We never stop learning 🛑❤️😍

Great video! I can't think that anyone could be anything but impressed with you. I'm a few years older than you and had Home Economics classes in junior high that taught me the basics of sewing and a whole lot more. There were also some TV shows about sewing way back when. One woman in particular was very good at instruction, I just wish I could remember her name. I would have given a lot to have UA-cam videos to learn from! Your videos are very good too about showing all the little fiddly things you need to know/do. Thank you.

Thanks again, I worked at Hancock fabrics in Glendale az while in college, I sew alot, but I take shortcuts as much as I can. Try to make a pattern fit with less yardage. I learn alot from watching your tutorials.
