Steve McQueen was a complicated and at times difficult guy. He and Garner remained friends throughout his life.

Read James Garners bio. A lot more interesting.
I don’t think James Garner was mean spirited and the impression of backstabbing McQueen is not consistent with Garners character. He answered questions in interviews and gave his honest thoughts in a respectful way. Steve McQueen had a difficult early life, like Garner, and the both took different paths.
James garner was traditional and it came through in his acting. They both made some great movies.
I was hooked on Garner by being a fan of Maverick.

I disagree, Steve was an incredible actor, and made sure other actors he worked with were treated well. Steve use to eat lunch with the crew.

I once read Mr Garner said of Steve M c Queen that “ Steve was not an actor, he was a movie I think I knew what he meant and I agreed.

Thank you for this video about James Garner... who could say they didn’t like James? I like McQueen too, however, I do not know what he was really like to be around although many other actors complained he would always try to steal the limelight. I admire ANY Actor who stays married to the same person. It shows the real depth of their character.

I always enjoued Steve Maqueen movies and TV shows, but he was distant and self centered. James Gerner was always warm, cordial, and fun. Different men delivering great entertainment. Like in real life the people you work with are very talented and deserve respect so do both of theste two fine gentlemen. Garner was my favorite. He reminded me so much of my own dad.

Steve McQueen was such a great actor that he made it look easy. The Sand Pebbles was a great example of how great an actor Steve was. James Garner was also a great actor. You cannot compare these two, because they are so different. Steve made 15 million for Towering Inferno. This is like 100 million today. James Garner never made that kind of money for a film. Both were great actors.

James Garner was a specialist . He could mix comedy and drama at the same time. He and Rock Hudson were specialists and both worked with Doris Day. I think they both were not easily defined and why neither got awards. That in no way lessened their ability. Both did good on film and on TV they had a skill that could work in either medium and succeed . Most movie stars have trouble doing TV. I was on set late at night of Rockford but never saw Garner. His crew said he was around.

I am a big fan of both, but I strongly disagree with Garner. They were both good actors. Just as McQueen was the "king of cool, " those traits resonated in his roles. Garner's easy charm, natural friendliness, and strong presence also resonated in scenes when he was alone or in a room full of people. McQueen completely accepted what he was. But maybe Garner was just a little bit like all men, we all want to be more "cool", the kind of "cool" that effortlessly oozed out of QcQeens pores. It's called the "I wanna be like him" syndrome.

I worked on the Hallmark Movie “Promise”……James Garner, James Woods and Piper Laurie.
Shot around Salem, Dallas and Triangle Lake…Eugene area.
All three actors were a true pleasure to work with….
Over the course of 15 years or so, I worked on several major motion pictures ( extra casting ) in the Oregon area, as I worked for a major Portland Casting Company.
It is not always so pleasant…..I did about 4 or 5 series of Knots Landing when they shot over on the coast. Donna Mills and William Devine were very pleasant.
Kindergarten Cop was fun…….Arnold was fantastic with the kids. ( it is very challenging to keep grade school kids attention during the hours of retakes…..( and I was in-charge of the extra’s )
Arnold actually helped when he could.
Oh well….enough……what a great piece of my life.
( last movie was “Night Ride Home,” R Lee Ermey….Kieth Carradine and Ellen Burstyn. Really nice people……and as a Marine, visiting with Lee Ermey was pretty damned cool !! )

Yuck, skip this long winded nonsense and read their Wikipedia Bios. If Garner wants to run his mouth about someone not being an actor he should talk about Garner. They were both huge car racing enthusiasts and nothing is said about any of that in all of this drivel. McQueen was probably better at it and competed more, but Garner was no Joke at it. SEARCH Rockford turn. For McQueen on motorcycles watch On Any Sunday.
