    I'm a newbie to creating backups and would like to know if my idea would work using UrBackUp . I have two machines, a windows 10 desktop with (3) three internal nvme ssd drives, a windows 10 Laptop with (2)two nvme internal drives and (2)two nvme external drives.
    My idea is to use a mini computer running windows 10 or 11, with a large (maybe a 5T ssd) drive for holding backups, the OS(10/11) on a 128GB nvme drive.
    populate the mini PC with the windows version of Urbackup server, the Desktop and Laptop with the Urackup client version, and do my backup of files from both machines. I'm not interested in the speed of the backup or stuff like that. I just want to be able to backup certain files and folders on a scheduled basis automatically. would my idea work?

    Is there a way to stop the broadcasting and/or put some sort of authentication for clients on the URBackup server?

    • @AwesomeOpenSource
      @AwesomeOpenSource  Рік тому

      A lot of places start you on the helpdesk because it gives you an opportunity to be exposed to the daily issues, and learn the basics of the location / network, etc. But, if you're looking to avoid that as an IT person, you might think of starting your own business. Setup a home lab, and "create" your own issues, then work through solving them. The troubleshooting process is important for success. That's my 2 cents on it...i'm sure others have thoughts as well.

    Great video. I always learn a lot.
    Does this offer a way to browse backups other than the latest one? E.g. If you were doing a full system incremental backups every day could you use the web GUI to restore a single file from a week ago (meaning their would have been 7 incremental backups and you only want to restore the single file not the whole drive)? If so I would love to see how that works. Also would be great to see you restore a system since that is the real reason you would want this.
    Thank you so much for taking the time to make these great videos!!!

      I see, in the Backups tab, each machine I am backing up, and if I click on the machine name, it then takes me to a page where each backup is shown with date and time, etc. From there you can take actions. I can continue clicking down into the levels to get to each file in the Downloads folder, then list out the versions of that file that are backed up as well.

I just like NextCloud better IMO but i do have 2 Unraid Servers Running & a FreeNas all Dual Xeons so i play around with a lot of different Dockers & Vm's an docker is so so much easier to set up than any cmd line ! it was a little more challenging to set up on FreeNas jail than in a unraid Docker But The Docker is like 3-4 Clicks & Done ! I use it for a auto/Live back up of my phone/Ipad Data.. wouldnt them be Way Easier for a noob trying to get started ? ?

    • @AwesomeOpenSource
      @AwesomeOpenSource  3 роки тому +4

      I've covered NextCloud in the past, but I makea differentiation between a Syncing system, and a backup. A backup keeps historical data with archives of things you may delete from your main system, whereas a syncing service will delete things across systems as you delete them, and so on, thus keeping things in sync. I think NextCloud now has some archive function, but for backups, I prefer a dedicated backup solution. But that's just me. If what you're doing works for you, then definitely keep it up.
