    In 1984 my husband Tom and I, who were from Long Island, were looking for lake property. We came upon Summit Lake, and rented a cabin from Ernie and Thelma Edgerly who lived on the south side of the lake in the summer of '83 & '84..' In 1985, we ended up buying 3 acres lakefront, on the north side of the lake which included 5 old old cabins, and a lot of junk on it. We removed 4 of the 5 old cabins, and the junk and Ernie helped Tom build a new one. We renovated the existing one, and eventually built a year round house. Ernie and Thelma told us the whole story of the making of the Sleepaway camp movie and how they used their house for the electric hook up for the equiptment. It all was quite interesting. The camp that they used , Camp Algonquin, was still in operation at the time. We'd hear the loudspeakers calling the kids, and see them giving watersking lessons during the day. The kids were well behaved that went there, there were never any problems that we knew of.. It was owned by a another Long Islander, we heard, and ran for several summers thereafter.When the camp closed, in the late 90's , we bought their "ski" boat, and row boat, and they sold all their other equiptment. It was sad. They tried to sell all the camp property to a developer, but the town vetoed the prospect which was to include condos, ramps, and boat slips, ruining the natural beauty of the place. It was then sold to a realtor who sold lots, and homes were built. The beach area was sold, as is, and included the tennis courts etc. We moved up to the lake, Full time,to our year round house in 2007, and just sold our home there in 2017. We miss it very much but it was time to move on. We have a copy of the movie, but it dosent' really look like it did way back when I don;t think.It is a beautiful little lake, and we enjoyed our years there and the movie is a piece of the lake history. Great to see these filming locations back after so many years. Even know a lot has changed, most of them are still recognizable.

    Hello, Jim. My father actually owns the entire property the movie was filmed on! He would have loved to show you around and tell you more about the location.

      Hi Kate, thanks for your comment. Man, it's too bad I didn't know that when I made the video. It would have been great to have someone tell me more about the location. I can't believe it's already been 3 years since I was there and made this vid. Thanks for watching!

      Hi Kate, Yes, the camp property your father bought is beautiful....and he'd done a lot with it to enhance it. We also were proud of what we accomplished there, on our 3 acres, on the "point", (Breezy Pt. Way), we miss it.

      Awesome video Jim! And that's beautiful property that your father owns Kate! I'm in NYC about 3 hours away and was planning the same mini road trip to the movie locations when the world eventually goes back to normal lol! Sleepaway Camp has always been by far my favorite horror movie and always shocks whoever I show it too.

    Pretty cool! The fake mustache was due to the actor being called back to do the night scene, but he had shaved his real mustache off after filming the day scene.

    You needed a boat, dude! Thanks for this! SC is definitely in my top 5 favorite films of all time. I make everyone I meet watch this movie. I have them all on dvd, but I have the original uncut VHS...found that gem on eBay years ago! It breaks my heart to see history murdered in the name of cruddy trailer homes and trashy boat docks.
    PS - I think that actually IS the real Jonathan Tiersten! That is awesome!

    Thank you! Glad you like the video. You are right, I read online that the camp was built in the 1930's so yes by the time they filmed Sleepaway Camp it was a pretty old place. While I was making this video I stopped and spoke to a woman who told me a bit about the movie and why the buildings were torn down. She said that she had lived on the lake since she was 5 and she is now in her 50's. It wasn't until I left that I thought "Crap, I should have interviewed her on film for the video!"

    Good to see this 30 years later, same scenery almost. You did a nice job editing too! I think it's great they actually shot the film in upstate NY, whereas most of the Friday the 13th movies, for example, were only supposed to be in NY and I think they filmed in northern California for many of them. Well done!

      BuccaneerBruce Thanks! It is a shame. I wish I could travel back in time to 1983 and do a location video when all the buildings were still there just as they were in the movie, lol.

  • @DigitalJaymz
    @DigitalJaymz  11 років тому

    Yes it certainly has changed. While I was there I found myself wishing that all the old cabins and buildings were still there. They would have been so awesome to see and film. Now the camp area just looks like some guys yard. Thanks for watching my video!

    Well, the woman said that since the cabins were old and falling apart the town sold the buildings to someone in the wood/logging business and that person demolished all the cabins. Then the town was originally going to turn that area into a public beach and new camping area, but something went wrong and they ended up building houses around that end of the lake instead.

    My agent didn't tell me I'd be making a cameo appearance. I better contact him and make sure I am getting royalties everytime someone views this video and says, "Who the hell is that bald guy with the glasses ruining the shot.", lol.

    Don't take offense, consider this as constructive criticism. If you had been bolder to announce your presence in certain parts of the video, they possibly would have let you walk in and you could have gotten much better shots.

    • @DigitalJaymz
      @DigitalJaymz  6 років тому +2

      Yes Marcelo, I completely agree with you. I probably should have asked around to see if anyone would let me get closer to some spots. There was one lady with whom I spoke to on the other side of the lake and she asked if I was a fan of the movie, and she gave me a little bit of info on what happened while they filmed the movie. After I left the area I wished that I had interviewed her for the video.
