The Origin of Lagos Ownership: Tracing its Roots to the Awori's and Bini's

  • Lagos, as we know it today, has a complex and fascinating history that dates back centuries. The ownership of Lagos has been a subject of historical and political debate for a long time, with different groups laying claims to it. The Awori's and Bini's are two of the major groups that have played a significant role in the history of Lagos.
The Awori people are believed to be the earliest settlers in Lagos. They are an ethnic group from the Yoruba tribe who migrated to the region from Ile-Ife, which is the traditional home of the Yoruba people. The Awori's established their settlements around the Lagos lagoon, where they practiced fishing and farming. Over time, they developed a unique culture and society, which they governed through a system of chiefs and councils.
The Bini's, on the other hand, are an ethnic group from the Edo tribe who migrated to the Lagos region in the 14th century. They were led by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, who was sent to establish a colony in the area. Prince Ado and his followers settled in the present-day Lagos Island and established a trading post, which became a major hub for trade between the Bini's and other ethnic groups in the region.
Over time, the Awori's and Bini's coexisted in Lagos, with the Bini's dominating the political and economic spheres, while the Awori's retained control over the traditional and cultural aspects of Lagos society. This arrangement continued until the arrival of the Portuguese in the 15th century, who established a trading post on Lagos Island.
The Portuguese influence in Lagos grew rapidly, with the city becoming a major hub for the transatlantic slave trade. The Portuguese also introduced Christianity to Lagos, which had a significant impact on the religious and cultural landscape of the city. The Awori's and Bini's gradually lost their influence in Lagos as the Portuguese established their dominance.
In the 19th century, Lagos became a British colony, and the British consolidated their control over the region, imposing their own system of government and laws. The Awori's and Bini's continued to play a role in Lagos society, but their influence was greatly diminished by British colonial rule.
Today, Lagos is a bustling metropolis and one of the largest cities in Africa, with a diverse population that includes people from different ethnic groups and backgrounds. The Awori's and Bini's are still present in Lagos, and their culture and traditions continue to be an important part of the city's identity.

There isn't much detailed recorded history specifically about Lagos, Nigeria, from the 10th century. Most of the documented history of Lagos starts around the 15th century, particularly with the arrival of the Portuguese and the expansion of the Benin Empire.
However, it's understood that the region where Lagos is located had been inhabited by various indigenous groups long before this period. The Aworis, who are believed to be one of the earliest settlers in the area, are said to have migrated to the region several centuries before the arrival of the Portuguese, possibly between the 11th and 13th centuries. These early inhabitants established small communities and engaged in fishing, farming, and trading.
The lack of specific records from the 10th century means that much of what we know about Lagos from this period comes from oral traditions and archaeological findings rather than written history. These sources suggest that the area was already inhabited and had its own social and economic structures in place long before the arrival of external powers.

You nailed it, unfortunately Nigerians 🇳🇬 don’t read anymore as the effort it takes to comment, same effort to do a 1 minute research will tell them everything you have said and more. This history was taught in schools in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as the Oba of Benin just recently put to rest some days ago in Lagos that the Bini’s founded Lagos and the Oba of Lagos himself on an interview May 2017 Guardian newspaper stated that clearly. Let the ignorant keep arguing as the Awori rulers and chiefs have also stated clearly (several videos on UA-cam) that they are from Bini. I find it unfortunate that the non Lagosians from Oyo, Ogun, Osun states etc are the ones arguing ignorantly and stupid as if they know more than the Oba of Lagos, Oba of Benin and the Aworis themselves. All ruling kings and royal families from Lagos state know this truth.

It's clear you dont know what you're talking about. We are not from Bini, we are descedants of Ife (via Ogunfunminire). Binis were settlers, who met Aworis on Lagos Island. Im sure you don't even know that Oba of "Lagos" is not Oba of all of Lagos State, he's only Oba of a part of Lagos Island, which is Eko. I'm sure you also don't know that most of Lagos State used to be Ogun State so the four indigenous subgroups to Lagos State are the Ijebus/Remo, Egbas, Eguns, not only Awori. I'm sure you also don't know that Oba of Lagos isn't the only Oba in Lagos State. There are dozens of Yoruba Obas all over Lagos State that have no relation to Benin Kingdom.
I dare you to go to Abule Egba, Epe, Ikorodu, Mushin, Badagry, Oworonshoki, Iruland, Ikate, Ebute Metta and tell them they're not Yoruba, in fact 9 times out of 10 the language you will hear walking around is Yoruba. Go to Oba Elegushi, Oba Oniru, Oba Saliu of Oworonshoki, the white caps chiefs, and so many other Lagos State Obas and tell that they're not Yoruba, Omoluabi. In fact I welcome you to my ancestral town in Agege to come tell us we're Bini. They all have Orikis, I wonder if you even know what that is. In fact, go to the white cap chiefs and speak Bini to them and see if they understand you. We are Yorubas through and through. If Yorubas from Ogun or Oyo want to claim Lagos they can. There's a reason why Ogun State completely surrounds Lagos and there's a reason why Yorubas are the predominant group in Lagos. There's a reason why the lingua franca in all palaces is Yoruba. There's a reason why majority politicians of Lagos are Yoruba. It's Yorubaland! Stop trying to tell us who we are!
Talking so confidently as if you're ancestrally from Lagos or SW yourself.

@folorunshoboluwatife4901 Funsho the Aworis left Benin with their last exiled prince and settled at Ile Ife. Some of them gradually moved to Lagos, some of them are in many towns in Ogun state.
The present Oba of Lagos has stated in his speeches on a few occasions that Lagos was a Benin settlement and the ruling dynasty of Lagos trace their ancestry to Benin. The current Oba of Lagos is a great great grandson of Oba Ovonramen of Benin according to him.
The issue about Lagos not being Yorubaland originally has caused a lot of arguments. The obas of Lagos used to be called the Elekos of Eko and they were Benin princes. Eko is a Benin word which means camp.
Old Benin empire was very vast. It extended to some parts of the southeast of Nigeria and some parts of present day Ghana.
Some Yoruba towns in Ondo state have a large number of descendants from Benin (e.g Uzebu quarters in some Ondo towns. They do not marry those from Uzebu quarters in Benin as they are relatives. Every year they have a yearly festival and come together to celebrate) so do many Lagos family have Benin descendants among them, but our ancestors who can trace our history and tell us our real backgrounds are all gone now.
Removing history from schools has indeed created a bit of confusion.

@@user-ro8sy7hq8q Did you know Eko only refers to part of Lagos Island NOT all of Lagos State? Do you also know that most of Lagos State land was taken from Ogun State. Do you also know that Aworis aren't the only Yoruba subtribe indeiginous to Lagos State. Do you also know that Egbas, Eguns, Ijebus are also indigenous to Lagos State? Do you know that all Obas in Lagos have Orikis, tracing their lineage to Ife?
