- The 10th Earl of Eglinton was mortally wounded at Ardrossan North Bay in 1769 during a confrontation with exciseman Mungo Campbell. The earl was taken back to Eglinton Castle where he died a few hours after being shot.

Really interesting account, Roger. Thank you. Some of my distant Crawford ancestors lived in the Dalry area and had connections to the Earls of Eglinton (I'm a close Y-DNA match to a Crawfurd line who has solid documentation from both the Crawfords of Baidland and the Crawfurds of Ardmillan). You'll find the sapphire ring device of Eglinton on both their arms.
