It wasn't simply that game devs didn't try to take advantage of the Saturn's hardware... it's more like they *couldn't* because Sega didn't provide them with the development tools they needed. The Saturn was a beast of a 2D console for fighting games, and was well-suited to the Japanese market... but the American market called for something like the Neptune. Also, the SVP chip should have been sold in a simple pass-thru cart, instead of the 32X add-on, in my humble opinion.
Yep I know and he can also use emulation to get a impression and do same research about Panzer Dragoon Saga... Also he can also listed the Shenmue beta because that game really showed what the saturn can do, but they moved the project to the Dreamcast.
I am surprised you didn't include Sonic R according to Travelers Tails the only way Sonic R could run on PlayStation would require lowering the frame rate to like 10 frames per second which shows the Saturn could beat the PlayStation in the right hands! Radiant Silvergun is an impressive games for the Saturn and while yes it's an import but it really should have been on the list! Burning Rangers is impressive and I suspect if the entire force of Sonic Team had worked on it, it would have turned even better! It really sucks Sonic Xtreme was cancelled because looking at footage of that game it looked impressive and it sucks it got cancelled!
You're right, I can't understand why neither Sonic R nor Panzer Dragoon Saga were included on this video. You also have Street Fighter Zero 3 and Vampire Savior, two great games that make good use of the 4MB expansion RAM... Maybe that's why they were neither included as that could be considered "cheating". The Saturn was a great machine handling sprites, anyway.
The store clerk at "Funcoland" upsold my grandma on getting a deal. "Why get this PlayStation with no games, when you can get this Sega Saturn with Virtual Fighter 2 and Virtual Cop included for the same price."
I remember being addicted to VF2 on the Saturn whenever we used to rent it. I'm so happy to own a Japanese one with tons of great games, several included in this list.
it's not running at lower resolution. The Saturn's resolution is far away better than the Playstation. It's better than Model 2 resolution , what are you talking about
Burning rangers uses a trick with the second CPU using a 2d background layer to make transparencies as well as a somewhat dynamic shadow effect. While the over all res of the game is much higher than Playstation this trick requires 6 times the clock cycles to make it work so they lowered the res of the transparencies in the background layer so that is would not tank the framerate. its an amazing programming trick but it has its limitations.
What about Radiant Silvergun, Fighters Megamix, Sonic R and Elan Doreé? These utilize some tricks for transparency and lighting. And also, the 3D models for Goiken Muyou: Anarchy in Nippon are awesome. This game was developed by part of the team who did Virtua Fighter 2, so expect the best. And it's technically even better.
@@chrisrobinson82 Yeah DOA, VF2, Last Bronx, and Anarchy in the Nippon all looks better than Megamix. They added light sourcing to Megamix but had to lower the resolution as a tradeoff.
It's a shame the Symphony of the Night port was so bad from a technical standpoint. It could've really used the Saturn's 2D prowess. Also, no fanmade translation to this day. :(
HugoTheGod there are extras in the Saturn version including a new area and the ability to play as Maria. As far as I know, these two things have yet make their way to any English speaking territory.
Excellent topic. I've been studying the dev manuals for the past week, mostly the assembly that needs to go into the 8 or so processors (+DSP of course), and there is very little in terms of video material relating to the subject. It's nice to see some appreciation for all that hard work. I hope Ezra is always remembered, the man's work was phenomenal.
wow dude you really struggle with scripts huh, you seem way more comfortable on camera, didn't think that was possible ;) the reason why you're one of my favourite youtubers is because you're so good at speaking live, and rarely resort to jump cuts and prompters, keep it up bro
One 2D sprite-based game with 3D backgrounds I thought was really impressive on the Sega Saturn was Guardian Heroes. Treasure Games was greatly known for putting some of the best-looking games on a Sega console when Sega was still in the console business. Besides, Treasure Games need some more love in this day and age as I feel that they are being completely overshadowed by the big guns.
Duke Nukem 3D is one of those first person shooters that should be on there. It uses real time lighting. NightWarriros Darkstalkers Revenge was another great arcade port next to X-men Children Of The Atom. Virtual On was another great arcade port that made it's way to the Saturn showing of it's 3D capability. :)
Had to go back and enjoy this hardware pusher after your 32X pusher video. The Saturn release was while I was in the Air Force and I had an N64, Sega CD and was looking at the Playstation as my next console. Great video and nice choice of games. Hope your Week is Awesome and Big Congrats on all your Successes !!!
The analog pad from the saturn actually came out before the n64! Also I have played these games and for me DUKE NUKEM 3D on the saturn still impresses me the most when I play it.
That's why I watch this channel. I knew you were a cool dude. "Sega Saturn is my favorite console of all time"... Nuff said. Ultimate definition of cool. :) Love this system! Doesn't get enough love.

Wow, so much nostalgia in this video for me. I really appreciate the time it would've taken you to collect/capture the gameplay footage. I had a lot of these games as a kid. Sega Saturn did me good! I remember being a kid and having to choose between a playstation or Saturn for my b'day. I opted for the Saturn and I have no regrets (though the playstation was boss too). I played my console to the grave! No on-sale for little me. As I understand it, Sega Saturn is an expensive console to collect for. Regardless, I'm considering making a slight investment to recapture some of those memories and kick my mates asses at those arcade classics.
Hey man great vid. This is something I always wondered about, and it just so happened that it popped up in my recommended feed. Great selection I'll check out for sure, and the channel looks awesome, just subscribed
Nice list Shawn! You hinted at another hardware pusher: Powerslave, which most would say is a better port than the PS1 version. Also Doom and Duke Nukem 3D would go along with Quake as well.
You completely ignored the transparency/light effects issue the Saturn had and that's a major point when considering which games really pushed the system. Transparencies were easily done on the PSX but the Saturn almost always used meshes to simulate them. That is one the reasons why Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force 3 pushed the hardware, not only because of 3D but because they had to get creative to overcome those limitations.
I WS middle school when this came out and my older brother bought 1 mainly because we where 2d fighting game enthusiast so we imported Xmen vs Street fighter with 4megaram CSRT and sdkey swap trick cart. we mainly only used our Saturn for SF Alpha 2, Marvel Superheros vs Street fighter , Vampire Savior (Darkstasrkers 3) King of Fighters 94-97 the only 3d polygon game we own was Daytona USA , this is why when I eventually bought my Dreamcast I used it as a 2d fighter machine.
Well done! SO glad you included Burning Rangers. So sad that game was not re-released on modern game consoles or Steam. Panzer Dragoon Zwei was also a hardware pusher in my opinion. That game was amazing! Again, well done!
it's "Virtua" Fighter. Without the L. The same naming silliness applies to Virtua Racing. Virtual On is the oddball in the mix. Those games were my childhood in a nutshell. Thanks for posting.
Great list (BTW I love your shirt, Blaster Master Zero is awesome). I've got a bit of a controversial choice- I think the original Daytona USA is also a hardware pusher. While it's graphics generally underwhelmed gamers at the time, it's worth looking at how many cars it's able to simultaneously display in-game. Ridge Racer could do no more than 6 cars at once while Daytona could display 38 cars simultaneously! I think this is where having 2 CPUs really benefited the Saturn.
There's lesser known game for the Saturn called Scorcher. It's a one player racing game that really pushed the Saturn's hardware a lot. It has a lot of nice textures that most Saturn 3D games didn't see back then. It's an underrated Gem for sure.
New fan and subscriber for your channel, highly enjoy the vids! Just wanted to say the biggest one that jumps to mind for a North American title that pushes the Saturn and is not a 3d game is Dragon Force from Working Designs. While it is just a strategy rpg, the battles themselves throw dozens of animated 2d sprites at once, along with magic effects. I always felt these scenes were rather impressive even for the Saturn, and were definitely something i think the other systems of the gen would have struggled with.
Great list of games, you had some impressive picks. Many of the games in your list, including Burning Rangers and Nights, used transparency effects, which were not easy to pull off on the Saturn. Other games I would include in your list is Panzer Dragoon Saga and Last Bronx. Panzer Dragoon Saga also used transparencies, colored lighting, huge worlds, beautiful (and grainy) FMV, and was rendered entirely in 3D. Last Bronx has many of the strengths you listed for VF2 (great character models, high resolution, 60fps, etc) but also had added effects for weapon trails. The backgrounds in Last Bronx were also rendered in 3D in parts, along with the parallax scrolling seen in VF2. Also it's not technically a game but the Shenmue demo really showed what the Saturn could do. The character models shown in the demo were crazy for not only the system, but that entire generation. Excellent video dude. Subscribed!
Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force 3, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Deep Fear, Enemy Zero, Duke Nukem 3D, Atlantis, Grandia, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Last Bronx, Winter Heat, X-men vs Street Fighter & Sonic R were games that also pushed the Saturn's hardware's boundaries, too!
I loved my Sega Saturn. If you loved Sega in the arcade. Pretty hard not to like the Saturn. I kind of chuckle a little bit when people say it wasn't a 3D gamer. And then you look at games like Virtua Fighter 2 and fighting Vipers and virtual on amongst others. For a system that's not a 3D system. It's a pretty good 3D system LOL.
It's kind of hilarious in retrospect. 2 CPU's 2 GPU's dedicated sound dedicated memory for the CD-ROM controller expansion slot in a way, the Saturn back in 1995 was like a modern, multi-core PC, or maybe one of those rare dual-socket PC boards.
I know it wasn't released, but have you guys seen the footage of the Saturn version of shenmue? It blew me away, it was far above anything the ps1 could do surprisingly...
I like your Blaster Master shirt. My buddy and I played the heck out of that game back in the day. Unfortunately the ending was kind of a let down. Still have fond memories of playing it so long ago. We even made a special controller add on the let us fry the bosses a little easier.
Burning Rangers is one of those games that could've been great if it were completed. My mom bought my copy in '98 and I still own it. The audio quality is just amazing.
Ive always been intetested in the "whst if" systems Atari 7800, Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar, Nintendo Gamecube, Neo Geo and 3DO These systems had so much potential
Excellent choices. The only game I didn't play on this list was Astal. I understand that import games were left out which would have made the list much longer. One game I would have added is Virtual On.
- World League Soccer - Panzer Dragoon Saga - Radiant Silvergun - Sonic R These games were quite well known to push it as they used advanced programming techniques. Every one (bar PDS) used creative use of the hardware which programmers admitted would have been somewhat difficult to import directly to PlayStation
For North American games...Dragon Force was pretty stunning too. Sending out a giant tornado/meteor super while 202 high color sprites are on the battlefield was impressive even after hundreds of battles...
Sega did have 3D games in mind w the Saturn. Its just the way they went about it was different. They tried to use more Horsepower insead of a dedicated 3D GPU. This made programming for it very difficult. In the right hands it could work..
I just love the Saturn Logo, best console Logo ever.
rollandoTech I agree. Makes me wanna play it lol
It has a mysteriousness about it
US/PAL or Japanese?
Maruko Chan 99 they're all the same logo
Nah. It’s gotta be the Super Nintendo. I mean, just look at it: “SUPER NINTENDO.” It’s just, so...super.

It wasn't simply that game devs didn't try to take advantage of the Saturn's hardware... it's more like they *couldn't* because Sega didn't provide them with the development tools they needed.

It couldn't codebreakers filed a patent like that a month before svp cart but I agree with u
They could have charged $$$ for Virtua Fighter on the Mega Drive and we would have paid.
No Panzer Dragoon Saga?
Yep Panzer Dragoon Saga really push the hardware.
It's freaking expensive, I don't blame him for not doing it.
Yep I know and he can also use emulation to get a impression and do same research about Panzer Dragoon Saga...
Also he can also listed the Shenmue beta because that game really showed what the saturn can do, but they moved the project to the Dreamcast.

Panzer Dragoon Zwei was better looking IMO and had what appeared to me the higher and smoother framerate.

Zwei yes Guardian Heroes!
Deep fear had no release in north america
I don't know, Burning Rangers is a mixed bag for me.
Tomb Raider was impressive as well. It scared me for its depth and atmosphere in 1996.

What's missing? well apart from the obvious Panzer Dragoon games I'd say Wipeout 2097 is quite an impressive port.
Also Guardian Heroes.
This makes me want to play my Saturn after watching it again.
keep the great videos coming man!
Good list. I would consider Panzer Dragoon 2, Dragon Force, and Virtua Cop 2 for your next video like this.
Love the series, keep it up!
I found you through DrewTalks. Subscribed!
- World League Soccer
- Panzer Dragoon Saga
- Radiant Silvergun
- Sonic R
These games were quite well known to push it as they used advanced programming techniques. Every one (bar PDS) used creative use of the hardware which programmers admitted would have been somewhat difficult to import directly to PlayStation
I had no idea that Resident Evil was even on Saturn. Amazing.
Why limit the review to the US? Strange video choice.
Because USA is the only place that exists.

Good one
no need. they already fucked themselves. whats the point in kicking a dead horse.
Because who cares about foreigners?

Teacher: okay could you read this page in To kill a mockingbird

Street Fighter B.M. Bison kicking low sweep kick. It caused interesting after effects.
For North American games...Dragon Force was pretty stunning too. Sending out a giant tornado/meteor super while 202 high color sprites are on the battlefield was impressive even after hundreds of battles...
This is the first of this I've ever seen, nice!
Sega did have 3D games in mind w the Saturn. Its just the way they went about it was different. They tried to use more Horsepower insead of a dedicated 3D GPU. This made programming for it very difficult. In the right hands it could work..
virtual fighter was my junk when it came out, the guy with the crane...whooooooo, good times.
