The shift timings are in the TCU. Most import transmissions from that era can handle more like pressure and tighter timings. They were so concerned about having the smoothest shifts they overbuilt the trans and took all the snap out of the shifts.
Love these videos. The lulls in the shift you describe is from the ecu cutting fuel, retarding ign timing and closing the TRC throttle, that's why you hear the BOV go off every shift even with foot to the floor. Fitting a shift kitted valve body would cut the 1/4mile times by up to 0.5sec and also prolong the life of the transmission by minimising slippage between shifts and holding power up top by mechanically increasing line pressure and opening up passages in the shift circuits. Once you've done that you could remove the TRC fuse and or disconnect the "throttle ecu", it would trigger a fault code 89 but that will allow you to build boost on the line and not shut the TRC throttle valve preventing decent launch. Taking it further a standalone ecu controlling both the engine and transmission would transform the car to feel much more direct and modern.
i remember seeing guys making 450whp just with bolt on with stock twins. great seeing this video. brings back highschool memories sitting in the back seat of a TT auto supra
My wife drives an automatic 6.0 GTO with long tubes and I have to say it’s a nice change of pace and still fun to drive from time to time coming out of my mazdaspeed3.
Another awesome episode, thank you very much! Before I bought my Supra, I test drove the 6-speed manual (both NA and TT), 5-speed manual and the 4-speed auto (both NA and TT) . I fell in love with the 4-speed and I've been rocking it ever since. I have shimmed my actuators and increased the pressure in the valve body so it does shift faster and firmer, but obviously, it's not going to be as quick as a modern automatic transmission. When I'm driving around town, the shifts are smooth and you wouldn't know any different, but out on the back roads, you know that the transmission is not stock. It really is a great transmission, but again, it's not for everyone - same with the manuals. The good thing is that we have choice and we can go with whatever works for us 👍🏾.
Wow that car has come along way! Nice job guys…400 rear wheel HP is a nice streetable number. Can’t wait to hear the asking/selling price. Looking forward to the next video series…you guys rock!
I love how this kept true to what the Supra is, OEM+ builds like these are my absolute favorite by far as it still keeps to the original car as much as possible whatever car it may be.
If you had told me that I'd be saying this 25 years ago, I would have said you're out of your mind... But over the years I've actually developed some fondness for good old slushbox autos. They're reliable, smooth, easy to creep & launch, and with (usually) fewer gears, they can run through the rev range without hunting. When set up right and driven on public roads, they can be really sweet.
My friends ripped on me for years having an auto in my JZZ30 (albeit shift kitted) but I liked it. It was great for daily duties and spirited driving on the street. I'd buy another auto again without hesitation.
So good to see you guys tick off this OEM+ build guys. What a lovely journey it's been. I'm a Supra fan so i'll wait it either way haha But in saying that, this was a good series for sure!!!
Love this episode and as I get older, I miss my stock twins on my A80, the responce and manner, is suited for a nice daily/cruiser! I would go back to stock twins in a heart beat!

Wheels look stunning. Nice work with the car, wouldn't do it any different myself (might add some highflow twins in the future and some E85) + a shift kit if staying auto. When I had my JZZ30 Soarer daily driver, I had similar mods to your Supra. I retained the stock twins, dual 2.5 exhaust, shift kitted the auto and only did intercooler, twin intakes for each turbo, and an e-Manage blue. It ran SO well, the factory turbos never failed in 6 years of ownership. Couldn't fault the car, specially for daily driving in traffic.
Amazing! It is a night and day change from where you started. The wheels and color have all grown on me. I like the look. Watching your faces as you drive it confirms the goodness.
Love your content guys! Seriously nailed it on this series. I have an RB25 swapped 280Z, and its not where it needs to be for its current boost level (22psi!), and this car confirms I need to pull back on the tune. I want the car to live, and it will still be crazy fast at about 16-18 psi. Big HP numbers=expensive tires burned up, tickets, and unhappy neighbors…. Keep at it! Oh, and you were super tame on the scooter idiot. Nice to see you blow off a little steam on that dude…. Very appropriate.
I don't think the issue is the fact the twins don't make power, I more believe it's because people assume that "power" in a supra must be well over 600 or 700hp.

I had later version with variable timing. But I assume the twins are similar concept. You really need 2 boost controllers. One for each turbo. I installed 1 boost controller and it would do 0.8bar on first turbo and 1.0-1.2bar in twin turbo mode. But I installed second boost controller made 1 bar on first turbo and 1-1.2 bar in twin mode.
