would prefer twin 600 hp diesel stern drives with variable speed gearboxes , just for that extra range

Mercury is now offering a 2 speed supercharged 600hp petrol engine that weighs 1250lbs. I think two of those would be enough, and I'm fond of the Buzzi 650hp diesel with variable speed transmission. Four Merc 450 o/bs would also be a good choice. They weigh roughly 625lbs each.
