- Yeah, you like that garbage click-bait title? Me neither. But anyways, Robot Matter reached out to me about their new MercuryBox motor/gearbox combo. In this video, I give you an overview and compare it to my go-to drive solution.

I just like that they come pre-assembled. I never wanted to go through the trouble of doing a brushless conversion, but just buying brushless is much easier.
Great video! Very informative!
Great video, exactly what I needed. Thanks!
The best brushless drive is in lynx. It's running hyperlite 22XX motors and some crazy gearboxes.
He mated the 2205 motors to 27:1 Mercurybox gearboxes
Hey Robert, I've recently ordered a pair of Hacker A10-13L with 4.4:1 gearboxes for my beetle, gonna see how far I can take them :3
I would love to see another video focusing entirely on the different esc options for powering these types of motorboxes
Pressed pins in a planetary gearbox will absolutely start to walk, but only when overloaded. Causes some nasty grinding and eventually binding, but usually easy to fix in a hurry.
@rain workshop- pretty sure lynx runs these gearboxes now
Nice video, debating switching to brushless for our beetle.
All insects should run brushless. I don't think brushes make a lot of sense for insects. My personal opinion.
I mean for Antweights, not necessarily in my opinion. With the outrunner also making it harder to design around, I like using some nice powerful brushed motors in my ants, and have not really ever ran into issues or been out powered in drive by a brushless ant
@@RobertCowanDIY low low man brushless when lmao
Is the motor shaft easy to swap out for a longer one?
"A good general rule is about 1000 RPM at the wheel."
Me with Shrapnel Mine: 7500RPM on the wheel XD
Can’t wait to see it in action!
Iv been looking for the sk3 motors since your video from 2 years ago.
Ha! They are tough to find. I bought about a dozen of them a long time ago.
Okay, that's curious. I expected a lot more output power out of those brushless motors. I've recently built a race drone with 1408 sized motors at 3750kv running 4S and I believe each motor will easily produce at least 100 watts of output power in their current configuration. The motors are rated for a little over 300 watts for 30 seconds without burning up.
Is the difference in output power between these beetleweight drives and drone motors so different purely because of the use case (high speed low torque vs low speed high torque) or is something else going on? Maybe cooling since the drone motors are whizzing through the air at high speeds?
Pretty much any power spec coming out of any hobby brushless motor made in china is complete BS.
@@isaakmalers I guess the current sensor in the drone is also reporting BS then. The 300 watts may be excessive but it easily sustains 100+ watts in flight. But I've looked into it a little more and it seems to be mostly a thermal issue that makes the difference in rated power. So for the use case of drones they don't suffer that much because they are well ventilated and given a proper sized prop will suffer a lot of current before melting. I guess these drives can also suffer a lot more tha 50 or 90 watts in bursts but just have to be very careful about heat.
@@foxtrotHQ just because you can physically put 300 watts through some wire doesn't mean you have a 300 watt motor. At some point you run out of magnet.
To be fair, some of the extra weight is in the wiring. Shortening the wires will save some grams, even with the bullet connectors added.
You're not wrong. But it is only a couple of grams at most.
@1:21
Are you challenging me?
I figured at least one person would take that as a personal challenge. ;-)
Do you think the 27:1 would be good for a hammer
I mean, hammers aren't generally all that competitive, might as well just stick to good drive and a wedge.
@@RobertCowanDIY I’m not really looking for a very competitive robot, I just want to make a hammer because no one makes them and I love hammer
@@_ghosthat_2532 In that case, as long as you know what you're getting into, these should be good. They're a bit large and heavy, but if you get the 6mm shaft version, they would work well as long as you calculate the right speed and such. Good luck!
@@RobertCowanDIY thanks
I tried ordering A few items from Robot matter about a month ago (after seeing this video) and to this day the order has not been filled. I sent a few emails with no reply. I will update/this if things change. Just posting this as a PSA for anyone else thinking of purchasing from them.
Ouch. I'll reach out to them.
@@RobertCowanDIYThanks, I appreciate it mate!
I also made an order a couple of weeks ago and I still haven’t received them. I emailed the company and messaged on Facebook for order status with no reply.
I ordered some stuff from the website and they are completely unresponsive and I have (unfortunately too late) now have seen a bunch of stuff about never getting their order. Has anyone actually received parts from this company?
EDIT: Update - I got a very nice message from them yesterday explaining that they had trouble getting parts from their supplier in China due to the new strain outbreak over there and are currently shipping my order. I assume the same thing is either happening or will happen soon to the other orders in their backlog. I look forward to using their products as soon as they get here!
Oof. I know the people that run the company, it seems they were just ill-prepared and incapable of running a store. Really sad, they have a good product but don't know how to run a proper business. :-(
@@RobertCowanDIY I just checked the website, I think they took down the product
The same thing happens to me, I ordered some products 4 months ago and I have not received a response from the company
