Small story correction, The Hero of Men is not confirmed to be Gustaf. This has been a theory but only that. Its most likely not since no Hero has ever canonically gone by anything other than Link.
Yet another great video! I actually played this game for the first time a month ago and enjoyed it quite thoroughly. Personally I'd rank it higher than you did, but not too much higher. The art style is amazing, the four sword mechanic is brilliant, and this game has the 2D Zelda best boss fights. The Gyrog Pair & Vaati battles (plus other enemies) would easily elavate it to 5/5 for me. Regardless though, nice video and I hope all is well with you!
The only thing i disagree with is the art style not being a 5. It's so polished and perfectly done, but otherwise, despite being my favorite game in the series, it is indeed a pretty average Zelda Game (cannot wait to see how low you rate Zelda 2; I love that game and it's so fun to hear all the opinions about it!)
Really solid entry in the series. Amazing pixel work, great music and puzzles. Definitely a must play for any Zelda fan who hasn’t gotten around to it yet. I know some people don’t like the kinstone mechanic but I liked it. At the very least it’s pretty unobtrusive.
Glad this game got added on Switch giving me the chance to replay it after so many years. My one complaint is not alot of dungeons but this game has fun replay value for me. Music, combat and items are all really fun.
Nice and fair! Here is how I would personally rate the categories: Story- 3 World- 2 Art Style- 4 Gameplay- 2 (probably biased because I first played this close to the much more seamless feeling Link Between Worlds) Items- 3 Dungeons- 4 Bosses & Enemies- 4 Side Content- 3 (get the Kinstone criticism but ultimately even if the system is broken, many of the quests are fun, it has a nice side quest world via the town) Pacing- 3 Music- 3 OVERALL: 3.1
I left it open because I may do Tears of The Kingdom but I may also want to wait for the dust to settle on that one since when you first play a game you tend to think overly positive about it and I may wait for a second playthrough.
This game was a lot of fun to play for me! I am actually currently racing with my brother to see who can beat all Zelda games first, so this was a fun game to stay in the lead with! Overall, I agree with your ranking of the game, with only a few differences in opinion. Pretty gud vid imo.
Thank you! If you have any Zelda friends, I would highly recommend doing a challenge like this. It gives a great excuse to visit older titles in the name of outscoring your friends!
Funny that people call minish cap a bite sized adventure despite it being one of the longest 2d zelda games. But I don't even disagree because it just gives that kind of energy.
For me personally, Minish Cap is amazing and so much fun. My favorite two Zelda games are Minish Cap for 2D and Breath of the Wild for 3D. There's just something about Minish Cap. It's so well balanced. There isn't anything I can point to and say "Meh. This is a weak part of the game". Whereas with most other Zelda games I can. I have't played Skyward Sword yet because I'm saving that one for last but I honestly expect that to join my favorites and form a Top 3 because I know a lot about it already and it sounds perfect for me. I think Capcom did an amazing job with Minish Cap and they proved why they are one of the best game developers out there.
What a game. I really gotta do a replay one day. Only beat this twice since i got it in 04 - The one time it was better to be from Europe and not USA 😅
Loved this game! One of my favorite 2D Zeldas. So fun. For me, it’s a 3.5. Not far from your ranking. Probably a 4 if we’re ranking 2D only. I think comparing 2D to 3D Zelda is a bit unfair. They’re not really comparable and in most cases, eD Zelda will be more impressive.
Always found the minish cap to be a perfectly above average Zelda game. It's not the best but not the worst either, the art style is gorgeous and I think it makes for a great first time zelda game for a person who has never tried the series. It's only flaw I would say would that I would prefer if it was a bit longer, like one dungeon more.
I just finished this for the 1st time myself, and I found it to be just okay. Really liked the dungeons and bosses, but found exploration and kinstones downright frustrating at times. Had to look up where to go next several times. the art style is very good, but I think it borrows to much from other Zelda's, and as a result doesn't have its own identity. the only thing the game really has all it's own is the shrinking mechanic; and while I think it gives some very cute and creative set pieces, puzzles, and enemies... it is more cumbersome and convoluted than fun. I don't regret playing it, but just a lukewarm 5 or 6/10 for me in terms of Zelda games.
Played this game twice and never knew the hero from the opening cutscene was named Gustaf! Edit: so the king in the Graveyard is the hero in the legend?
@@GameEssays Cool! Nice review as usual. My only disagreement would probably be that the kinstones just don't really bug me that much, but the figurine quest.... don't get me started.
The Minish Cap is the good average Zelda game, not the greatest of the franchise, but a good sidestory one with a GBA Charm, great visual and good gameplay. I like du describe it as a Good Vibe Majora's Mask 😅, you're not squeeze by time and the world is so colorfull than you want to take your time to do it. I also like the lore about the Four Sword, I recently watch a video by Zelda Lore about the Timeline and like than it make more sense to separate the 2D zelda and 3D zelda as TWO distinct Line, with only a split with OOT when Link go back in time, create a split in to reality, one for MM's and TP, the other the WW, PH, ST. And that's make Minish Cap / The Four Swords Trilogy as the begining of the 2D zelda's game.
Gotta be honest, I found this entry in the series just meh. Dungeons and bosses were just mediocre for my liking, music themes were nice, but GBA-sound didn't do it well, overworld travelling was tedious and I don't think I'll have to say anything more about kinstones and the gallery heartpiece. I liked the Oracle games much better, albeit I think they need a remake.
Small story correction, The Hero of Men is not confirmed to be Gustaf. This has been a theory but only that. Its most likely not since no Hero has ever canonically gone by anything other than Link.
Great video and thanks for the shoutout!
Thank you!
There is no fucking way you put Link to the Past's art style above Minish Cap's. I get that biases can be hard to put aside but this is egregious.
EXACTLY. ALTTP is a great game and my #1 overall Zelda game. But let's be real on the artstyle about Minish Cap. It smokes everything!
Yet another great video! I actually played this game for the first time a month ago and enjoyed it quite thoroughly.

I couldn’t agree more with your ranking. I love these definitive ranking videos!
Minish Cap is so charming and the shrinking mechanic is really cool

It has only just occurred to me that there was never an ant-themed dungeon, what a missed opportunity!
Glad this game got added on Switch giving me the chance to replay it after so many years. My one complaint is not alot of dungeons but this game has fun replay value for me. Music, combat and items are all really fun.

I liked it. Both the game and the video. Yo Essay. We got a week Sir.
So close!!!
Lovely game !
Thanks for the video !
This was a fine Zelda but getting everything with the kinstones and the last bit including the final boss was a real slog unfortunately.
It was my first zelda game and man was it BRUTAL.
My first Zelda game i ever played!! And i fall in love with the series.❤ cause i grow up with the gba sp.
Great video! Do you know which game you'll be reviewing next?

Another great video Ryan, keep it up, looking forward to your tears of the kingdom videos
Thank you! 7 days away!!!
This is my first Zelda game, playing it in 2024 on my Miyoo Mini and it's amazing! I'd rate it 4.5/5 as game (not compared to other Zeldas)

Gustaf as the hero of men is not confirmed actually, I should have left that out, but it is a common theory.
